Are the lids air permeable?

If not, overactive mosquitoes (on left) die of suffocation from increases oxygen usage by increased metabolism. Digesting blood uses some energy for breakdown of blood components. (there's a term for that) So they simply die of oxygen deprivation.

If yes, they die of grievous injuries due to overactivity.

If you actually noticed, both sets of mosquitoes were in the same containers, the only difference was the food. The one with food in it had the mosquitoes in it die, the one without were fine. If, as you said, it was caused by the container, both sets of mosquitoes should have died. Science is fun :)
