Ohhh, yeah. I recall this very well from my senior year in college. It was so incredibly powerful to me at the time. Every 93 shining star I saw was more amazing than anything I have seen since. When they started to play at the Warfield with the curtain still closed....it lifted slowly to this. Damzzz.
The vibe from this performance is transformational. The visual of Jerry all white washed out is otherworldly and acidic. It seems like the vibration could bring peace to all hearts. Thanks for spreading this around.
This whole concert never stopped being COOL! Even to this day a warm feeling of satisfaction comes over me when thinking about this show. It was far more than I was expecting to experience. This definently wasn't my 1st show, but man its the one that made me want more. ',_,'
The fact that there are zero "dislikes" is a testament to the fan base, though some clown will probably read this and dislike it, but I bet my left nut that they never saw Jerry live or know his music. He's be gone nearly 16 years and I still miss him. I'm thankful there is so much JGB and Dead out there...
We drove up from Florida for this show and it was worth the trip. Jerry and crew were on fire, playing from the soul. This was a magical night - something about Hampton that made Jerry really shin (no pun intended). Maybe it was the general admission that made it different for Jerry and everyone else. Be where you want to be...I miss the fat man - there will never be another like him. RIP
@atthemark We only drove down from DC, but so glad we made it! It was a truly awe inspiring night. Over the next 6 months I danced many times holding my baby daughter, me singing along with this tape. Recorded about 25 feet from the stage, DFC in the sweet spot with version one of my stealth mics.

The tears won't stop falling =*( Miss you always Jerry. Had the honor of seeing this show while holding my daughter Rosemary, not even 2 months old, and singing to her ♥ She stayed awake the entire show and didn't cry once.... Nothing like Jerry serenading your baby =)
Where is Neil's sister? What is her name? She's better! I never realized how great she made the songs until he was gone.
FYI, we liked Brent because he fought Jerry ( assume, Bob, too if about the drugs?) it was hypocritical saying 'he's gonna get fired if he doesn't quit doing so many drugs.'-from Jerry? , 'i have always heard that virtue ought to be it's only one, but it never comes so easy when ur livin by the storm, it's even heartless when u look at me that way' -thrwn glances acrs room?
One of the greatest nights of my life!! Have listened to this Shining Star (an entire show for that matter) so many many many times over the years that every note if etched in my brain forever. To see video of it for the first time is amazing. Thanks so very much for posting!!!
I remember running in circles around the lobby. Literal circles, all the way around the buildlng, like we did in Providence. THANK YOU FOR POSTING. I am weeping.
Alli & BigHyme Ya'll ain't the only ones I lose it EVERY Time I hear this. And it was our wedding song too, HYme.....I look at the whole experience like this...Jerry Garcia obviously enjoyed what he did and making people happy. He had a rough life, and it's like he was a Soul Doctor or something...And thats taxing.
But, one can clearly see all the joy that came out of this man onstage, and all that was generated by the audience response. Everytime I see the Dead or especially JGB, I lose it, because I miss the vibe that came off the stage so much. Sometimes, you could see the tension with the GD, but with JGB, it was usually pure JOY. We mustn;'t forget that, and we must try and carry that joy to others in the world, as they run the rat race
. A lot of times, these gigs were the only escape we ever had from the GRIND of LIFE and all it's harshness. Don't think Jerry didn't know that...And over time, it took him down, but he did it 'cause we loved it...and deep down, so did he.
Geeze I really do have to stop crying over Jerry one of these days, but this one brought on the waterworks again. God, I miss him. One less star really does seem to make everything quite dark and cold. He was a really bright one! Thanks for posting despite makin' me cry, it's beautiful, just beautiful.
Nah, the image at the beginning is from a CD called shining star that is a compilation of stuff from 89 to 93. Dont think anything from this show is on the CD though.
@Alfrunk you can always find entire Grateful Dead shows at etree-dot-org simply type in 'grateful dead' and be amazed at the amount of complete shows the tapers have put out there ---- NOTE these are not official Grateful Dead recordings these are from the taper section - but WOW there is still some crazy narly stuff out there for download - ENJOY
@AbeBSea I felt that way for a long time, but ya know lately I've been realizing, that Jerry lived a good life, a productive life and he was happy. Everyone has their vises, if he smoked too many cigarettes or ate too much salt would we feel the same? Not that i don't miss them. God, I miss them something feirce. But I'm comin' to terms with their deaths by looking at their lives? does that make any sense?
@alligayda Yes, I do understand. I actually have always felt that given Jerry's lifestyle, he'd actually lived on borrowed time for quite a long time. Brent's death, on the other hand, was quite shocking (for me, anyway). I've seen photos of him at Buffalo on his last tour, and his eyes were bugging out!!! I guess he was speedballing.
Now, if you want to be depressed about lost potential, think of Hendrix or Morrison!!! Or Buddy Holly!!!
I saw the JGB in SF at The Warfield and this song did make me cry. The notes from his guitar just affected me in a way that I cannot explain. It forever changed me and touched my soul..literally..I miss Jerry so much..I really believe that when he died the world changed..for me anyway
this was a fine show. I remember it very fondly. Great memories of a magic night . Anyone have the Strugling Man? i remember that as one of the night's highlights.
My god, i can't stop bursting in to tears when I watch this, why? How could a human being like this exist in the universe? I am an atheist, but this could almost force you to believe in god. His music will travel with man out in to the stars, this is the first thing aliens should see of the human race. He's more than a genius, but what? It's his soul, his depth, how could nature produce such genius, such beauty, even the mistakes are works of art, part of the overall beauty.
On this last JGB tour in '93 this was the song he sang for all us hard core Jerry heads. I saw four shows and wished I saw more it was a great tour, one of their best.
It makes me so proud to be have been a Dead Head for all these years to hear all the grate comments about our boy. Whata wonderful time and truly magical part of my life.
Jerry Xmas Jam (yes I was there this past weekend)to all of you and Happy Bob Weir!!!
Indeed the closest I saw the Man was a few weeks before in Buffalo with several college frens from PLattsburgh. It was essentially general admission so we took advantaqge of a meelow front row right with the security and reveled in the band and flirted with Gloria and Jackie. Shinig Star opened set tow and you could hear pin drop during the a cappella coda! Last night I saw JGG!
I was the closest person (besides the security people) to Jerry Garcia at this concert. It was amazing. I drove from Cincinnati Ohio. It was General Admission. My friend Matt and I waited hours and ran into front row. I still have the T-Shirt to prove it, and he should too! :-) I was front row, center in front of Jerry. I'm wearing a Janes Addiction T-Shirt from their 1990 tour and khaki pants. I drove back home right after the show 11 hours, Straight. Matt was on 12 hits and kept me up. :-)
That is unreal bro. So you remember Matt puking and the security guards coming and being like "is everything ok?" I told them he was "sick" and Matt was tripping so hard that he thought the stage had filled with water and sharks were swimming going to eat Jerry!! Seriously! So then I gave him a Tum's "Antacid" and told him it would make his 11 hit of acid trip (what was he thinking?) calmer..and he was chill by Shining Star! What a blast. Being front row center for a great Jerry show.
It's a shame that my partner isn't too into Jerry or the Dead except for basic music appreciation. That's too bad cuz THIS is going to be our "song" if we can someday get married in NY.
I am looking for this JGB w/ Keith and Donna they sing moonlight mile on it. If anyone has it please post it or contact me- it is really an amazing and inspiring version. Also looking for a copy of Missippi Moon by Jerry Garcia Band. Thanks! BTW this is great this shining star I can't get enough especially when Jerry starts playin real sad like in part 2 - soooo good.
2/21/76 JGB has a great Moonlight Mile. Not sure about mississippi moon with that line up though. I think the only 70s jgb MMoons are w/ a wasted Nicky Hopkins...
@dopeywonder Which part is he not playing sad lol. Man this guy was in some real pain you can tell from parts of the video, but when he smiles its like a ray of sunshine!
I was at the show 2 weeks before in Portland Maine waiting and heard this for the first time live. Absolutely BLOWN AWAY!! It still does it to me every time I hear it now!! Thank you!!!!
How awesome to find this on Jerry's Birthday! Having been at this show and having told a million peeps about the 'shining star' (and on some crazy African root called Ibogane...) - this is a wonderful moment.
This was a general admission show and I was front row center right in front of Jerry wearing a Jane's Addiction T-Shirt. I actually bought a concert T-Shirt at this show for myself and the friend of mine I took with me - WHICH I STILL HAVE AND WEAR!!! OMG..amazing show. He puked over the front row border however due to too much acid, poor kid. I was sober and drove back to Cincinnati directly aftwards. He kept me up! Thanks Matt!
Leave to Jerry to take a fairly cheesy pop toon and give it life and credibility. This man could play the "Barney" theme and make a classic out of it. SOOO much soul, God rest his soul!!!
WOW!!! I was there and have 1st Gen Audience Analog. About 10yrs ago I was able to get a bootleg video from a different angle but its like 7th or 8th generation. I believed this opened the second set. I'll never forget this show and venue. JGB Hampton 11/19/93 special night.
