@CheapSushi and to every one else who thinks dahl is a ass-o you are all missing a major point here. If he was not like that he would never be on the radio in the first place this is a clear case of people demanding a product ( his kind of radio show) and he giving them what they want . that does not mean i am pro dahl i am just stating a point to what very one appears to be missing
Steve Dahl was 100% better than Stern. But it's ironic that Dahl and Meier went back to the Loop. They along with Jonathan Brandmeir, Kevin Matthews, Doug Banks, were the best.
@ebf1957 I disagree, but I think it's obvious Howard took a LOT from Steve's act in the early 1980's (of course Howard would never admit to any influence whatsoever).
People rip on Steve Dahl, but a least he's a lot more tasteful than Howard Stern.A lot of my old girlfriends hated Howard Stern, because they thought he was "Too Creepy",but at least Steve Dahl makes these women chuckle, especially with the "Ayatollah" song!! LOL!!
i thought mccarthyism and persecution such as lenny bruce, et. al. was long over -- don't we have something more important to do. since leaving the chicagor area one of the things i miss most is listening to steve dahly since the early days. find new management at all of the stations -- get up-to-date --- get real!
I just noticed something funny about this video, they interview the same (doucebag) management person on both station, I think it's Thomas Hoyt, but on the second video he's listed as Les Elias. And they thought that their ratings wouldn't be effected, boy were they wrong, at least until Johnny B. showed up and Steve & Garry moved to afternoons.
Dude, show me anyone that looks the same as they did 30 years ago (almost.)
What a cool clip though, glad to see more Dahl bits showing up on You Tube. He really is the classic innovator of that type of comedy talk radio whether other 'jocks' want to admit it today or not, it's just a fact. Great post! 5 star!!
When Steve started on WLS some weeks later, I snuck a transistor radio into the classroom of one of the most hateful teachers in my high school, just to hear the show.
suck a dick for both your comments!! im free to have my own comments on mr dahl without an asswipe like you talking shit. keep your disses to yourself..bitch!
I know this is an old comment by now, but you truly are a complete dildo, nice work jackass!
Steve Dahl IS THE KING, and he killed commercial, pop fad, garbage disco (not necessarily dance music or funk and R&B) and everyone owes him a debt of gratitude for it! That commercial crap with it's snotty uptight asshole scene deserved a quick and finalizing blow that was Disco Demolition Night! July 12, 1979 was a great (and insane) day, one for the history books (for MLB and history in general.)
Thats what steve dahl gets for the attempted killing of disco..attempted because disco went underground afterwards and re-emerged as house music. take that!!!
I never forget listening to WDAI the day it went disco--I was sure that it was just a spoof by Dahl. Song after song went by and I thought to myself, damn Dahl is letting this go on too long, when's the show coming on? I finally called the station and they told me Steve was 'no longer with them.'
I was a huge fan of steve&gary.Used to listen on WABX Detroit early 80's.Stern stole alot from Dahl.Steve Dahl should have been bigger than Stern.I like when he and gary would call people in Iran during the hostage crisis. Some original funny stuff. Thanks Steve for the memories and laugh's.
I was there-Disco Demolition! What fun-we split when the (fans area) fire started at Sox Park.
I feel he was the best on WDAI, alone, doing the funny radio charachters on the air. Miss that-would often be tardy at work, as I was sitting in my car laughing so hard! Thanks for the upload.
That's awesome. I wasn't there but I remember it well, it was fun watching 'older' people freaking out (like WGN listeners back then! Heheh.) and everyone pretending that it was a riot and other bullshit. While it was most certainly a stoned party crowd that went a little nuts (some vandalism but it wasn't a fight) it was a celebration signaling the end of an era and making a statement about commercial crap music being shoved down people's throats and people not taking it anymore! Hilarious.
Great stuff, but your time line is a little off in that Tyrone wasn't around until after Garry. But the old days were cool too, Dick Buttkick, Shorty the midget engineer, etc. classic stuff. (And what's really bizarre now is that Garry Meier is on WGN! Who'da ever thunk it?! But he's still a million times better than Wally Phillips!)
It was early 1981 they were on in Chicago Detroit & Milwaukee and everything was going great and then ...--painful memories but thanks for posting--- nice to see Fahey Flynn again
February 6, 1981 was when it happened.

Remember his tawdry songs, like
"Oh Wally..." (the lady from Tinley Park).
I loved it before Gary, when he did characters, Tyronne in the chopper, etc.
He was pure genius then.

Does anyone know where Steve went after getting fired from the loop? Was it WDAI/WMET? Cool classic footage there.
