blocks aren't well understood at all outside of the Okinawan karate community. You don't block to prevent getting hit, you block to hurt your opponent's arm or leg, throw their balance off and not get hit. I've taken out several kickboxers because they would hurt their legs on my forearm and elbow. At any rate, blocks aren't always blocks. You can knock an opponent's guard out of the way for your strike as well. They're just so much versatile than the way they're taught and trained.
@elenchus amen! what about the fact that in this use its drawing your opponent off balance and into your center-line (where the power is)? good shit! Now let go of all that recoil built up and send that gray bitch flying!
@elgrau1 You mention recoil, and I just wanted to say that I've been rediscovering uchi uke, not so much as a block, but as a way to take the guard out since the motion (inside to outside) of the "block" shares the same rotation as the imminent reverse punch you throw. So soto uke seems to have that pre-coiling effect, and uchi uke is post coiling.
wow i love how all these human weapon portrayal asian martial arts do an example of the shittiest punch thrown possible. no one in their right mind would do such a punch that leaves you completely unguarded and completely obvious and dodgeable. they need to show this move used against lets say ... boxers that actually know how to punch
hello fellow martial artists. my friend has made a facebook page called "Martial art skill wins the fight, not the style". feel free to visit the page and share some ideas, beliefs, subjects etc. if you plan on posting on the page please be mature and respectful. no one wants to read a childish cursing rant. if you would like to see right now, type facebook.com, copy and paste this afterwards
god they make the most basic stuff sound so dangerous haha.
"The tickle is one of the most fundamental moves in this fighting style. Not only can it cause giggling, but can make ur penis explode all over your lunch, furthermore causing you to starve to death by nightfall"
okay now you deflected his punch...but now you turned your uper body and is in a very sitty position to counter attack - wing chun knows how to do this correctly
Wing chun technique are more abt defense and let you more opportunitys of counter by being in the right angle and karete make you in an strange angle to counter plus by the time you are turned the other guys may attack again so Wing chun power!
@WeaponXAnimosity Yes i know but you have to deviate the attack of the other person and then counter-attack him while other martial arts like muay-thai use elbow and knee thus leaving space for the opponent to strike back- it focuses more on attacking while winh chun is counter attack but its still good , good defense makes good offense
@WeaponXAnimosity yeah i know but wing chun focuses more on couter attacking while other MA like muay-thai using knee and elbow leaves more spaces for the opponent to strike back but i still think wing chun is better- a good defense makes a good offense
@narutomaniac100 Yes, no one punches that way but not all poeple try to take you to the ground. More common is the popular wild haymaker punches on after another.
Karate looks more effective then it looks 30 seconds ago i was thinking it was shit but the way im seeing it now is karate is very effective its just it takes much much longer to master
Ye in karate at least my style(shotokan) the name of this block is Soto uke.Attention.The meaning of this block is not hiting the oppenents arm to stop it but to push it.
"With the moving momentum of your hand, grabbing your opponents balls and twisting them in a rotating fashion you exert a force equal to 3 tons, by then pushing them into his asshole you create a force of 4 tons, enough to pull them out of his mouth"
The problem with karate is, that many instructors are just students themselves, who can not be bothered to learn for 10+ years to get any good skill in the art and there for lack the final understanding. In many TMAs instructors give you basic, incomplete techniques at the beginning so those that are not true in their journey for knowledge shall drop out. Only after several years will you be given in-depth detail of techniques and real-life applications. That's why we have so many bad "masters"
the whole action involves moving your body out of the way of the punch anyway, its a waste of energy to use force to block a punch that is no longer a threat to you it also leaves you open to atack just as much as does ur opponent
@radon46widget the block is used to hit back, karate blocks are taught forcefully because your attempting to hurt them as much as your blocking. and moving your body in that matter in a fast hip motion brings great power in your counter straight or hook, whatever kind of punch you wish to throw. though i always use a sweeping motion, not a straight down forearm block.
@folioboards rear guard hand on ones hip is taught to beginners in karate to understand their own body mechanics, dont tell me you actually think karatekas fight this way in real life? in real life natural stances are encouraged. starting punches from hip is a teaching method not an actual technique. it is primarily for kinesthetic perception. karate stresses this alot in its teaching.
@glassesfreak That's exactly why I've never been shown this block. Hitting it like that could just lead to you pushing the punch down lower, it's better to sweep it away with gedan barai.
karate is stupid, what does anyone tell you when u get in a fight as a kid "keep your hands up" so why the fuch would be a need to 1 step into a punch so much so that if you miss your body momentum is fuckedd and keeping your hand at your rips/hips is a bad idea to begin with...
@ty99999returns I thought someone would reply to your comment that wouldn't be about having intercourse with someones mother but oh well. Anyways, the place of a hand to a hip is not used in a fight but it is fundamental to beginners just like @VpY22 stated. In an actual fight, Karate teaches you to always keep you're hands up whether it is sport or self defense. It is not useless at all and is great in fighting. Chuck Norris federation is a deadly Karate style.
@MagicGorillaProd Chuck Norris is an actor.... keeping ur hands up is good as long as they arnt too far down away from your head to block head kicks (fuck karate kid shit).
I knew someone who did taekwondo once... He was a black belt and was a regional champ... he got stabbed in the head with a knife by a 13 yr. old kid while walking home one night... sadly he didnt make it... :(
@Masa857 I guess firing balls is not really that helpful when we take a look how he falls from his board by touching the floor. Talking about NES game.
Assuming the attackers second fist isnt already flying at your face. Of all the martial arts ive seen, I think karate should stick to the movies. Not saying its completley useless, but compared to what you could use to defend your life, id pick krav or something else.
@Snapshot290 I won't even go into detail about why I will always call Karate my foundation as a fighter. However, the point I'm replying is that you act like Karateka are idiots and single minded from your first sentence. Of course we're ready for a second punch. That's nothing but the most basic of drills. I don't want to get into a heated argument. I practice Uechi Ryu, and have my opinions about some other forms as well. But at the end of the day, your experience defends your life.
@Pablokihon personally i find it inferior to wing chuns block because of the fact it puts you at an odd angle for a counter strike compared to wing chun.
@ARdotSTEALTH You're stupid you more susceptible to a shot to the solarplex or liver. You can use a short quick left hook to the liver, mind that its not full power 25% or so and drop them with ease
plus to anyone who doesnt think it can work in more aggressive combat sports, i do muay thai and MMA to, and i blocking an overhand right with an age uke has alwas done the trick for me, and leg kicks with a gedan berai (as long as i keep one hand to my chin to block any counters) has always worked for me to, im 4-0-1 at the moment, so it must be doing something!
this show ruins the identity of martial arts, most karate clubs hand out black belts to anyone dumb enough to pay for them, but there are a few classes out there like the one i trained at for 13 years (and only just got my black belt after 11) which are the real deal, and dont use half assed blocks like this, that doesnt even look like a gedan berai OR an uchi uke, uchi uke is across your body from the left to right, blocking a punch to the chest, and your fist should end up pointing to the sky
@ohmybettyswallocks I use this block all the time while sparring in my Dojo it is actually really effective because once I do the block I am able to use my elbow to strike his head really effective when executed correctly and even though I may be a white belt yellow in another week blocking is one of my strongest things aside from kicking which are my second strongest abilities but all in all it is not a half ass block it is really effective when done correctly
@Nightguy00 its effective for a single straight punch, which never happens in true combat, on the street or in the ring, too many clubs these days teach self defence and combat without even fighting full contact, so you have no killer instinct, which trust me you need in the ring and on the street. i do thai boxing as well, and these kind of blocks against thai kicks will NEVER, EVER work, i do karate also, and respect it, but modern karate should be modified to defend against other martial arts
well i train in shotokan karate full contact the "no bs" israeli way . and the block that shown in this program
its not even a "by the book" and a disgrace even to call it karate .
against combo of punches it should look more like violent and bruising version of "sticky hands" defense , vs kicks it works like a charm if u have the common sense 2 intercept it in its less lethal zone , i mean as much closer to the knee as u can ,bottom line if u know how 2 it'll l work great
@ohmybettyswallocks I don't agree , those kind of blocks work , you should learn them better ... it's 15 years I use the same karate block tecniques when i fight in Kick boxing , Thai-boxe ,kick-jitsu , tae kwon do...sometimes also in Boxing
Guys, it's someone moving their hand towards the center of their body to block a punch, a million different variations exist, but anyone claiming it "doesn't work" is just some keyboard warrior. This is probably one of the most common blocks there is and exists in (probably) every pugilistic form of combat...you may not like this variation but claiming it could never work is just showcasing your own ignorance of a simple, effective tactic.
@WiseSurf He is aiming for Solar plexus, I had a sparing fight with a guy who never trained in martial arts couple of months ago and he was attacking in this way even phoning his punches so this is very natural move and also a good defense you just have to shorten the regular scool block. Also if I wanted to I could have ended the fight with this blocks since they are painfull but I felt sorry for the dude since I already did the same thing with his legs by blocking, they were swolen for 3 days.
@MrKatushya Its soto uke, its just litle bit shortend so you do it from your guard and not from all the way back like in kihon, its how its sopposed to be used in real fights. And gedan barai is main defense against mae geri, it should be exelent against thai push kick as well if you don't beleve it just hit your leg with your arm a little bit from the side and you will see :) remember little bit because it hurts lige hell :)
im sorry sir, this is total bullshit, whatever the hell that is it isnt karate, more of a half soto uchi, half gidan barai, oh and one more thing, tell the silver surfer to check his fist, should remain on the hip :)
@JSDominos you are a retard training and conditioning of the arms make it so easy to block hard and hurt the other person while blocking I trained karate for 13 years and I blocked like this and I never got hurt and always hurt the otehr person. so please reserve your ignorant comments to yourself.
So sieht das aus wenn ich mit meiner perle ficke

@ohmybettyswallocks I use this block all the time while sparring in my Dojo it is actually really effective because once I do the block I am able to use my elbow to strike his head really effective when executed correctly and even though I may be a white belt yellow in another week blocking is one of my strongest things aside from kicking which are my second strongest abilities but all in all it is not a half ass block it is really effective when done correctly
Nightguy00 8 months ago
@Nightguy00 its effective for a single straight punch, which never happens in true combat, on the street or in the ring, too many clubs these days teach self defence and combat without even fighting full contact, so you have no killer instinct, which trust me you need in the ring and on the street. i do thai boxing as well, and these kind of blocks against thai kicks will NEVER, EVER work, i do karate also, and respect it, but modern karate should be modified to defend against other martial arts

@ohmybettyswallocks
well i train in shotokan karate full contact the "no bs" israeli way . and the block that shown in this program
its not even a "by the book" and a disgrace even to call it karate .
against combo of punches it should look more like violent and bruising version of "sticky hands" defense , vs kicks it works like a charm if u have the common sense 2 intercept it in its less lethal zone , i mean as much closer to the knee as u can ,bottom line if u know how 2 it'll l work great
YouTubony 8 months ago

The guy couldn't have hit him even if he didn't block... in case nobody noticed, he was too far away.

What is the dark grey guy aiming for? karate is gay...
WiseSurf 9 months ago
@WiseSurf He is aiming for Solar plexus, I had a sparing fight with a guy who never trained in martial arts couple of months ago and he was attacking in this way even phoning his punches so this is very natural move and also a good defense you just have to shorten the regular scool block. Also if I wanted to I could have ended the fight with this blocks since they are painfull but I felt sorry for the dude since I already did the same thing with his legs by blocking, they were swolen for 3 days.

@Theseus1000 thank you for the explaination and not being pissed off lol

I use this in Boxing and didn't even know it was from karate.
Thebombjizz 9 months ago
@Thebombjizz I think it's a bit different than boxing's parry because Karate blocks with their bone to hurt the opponent's arm.

@Macdaita I don´t know if this is a uchi uke or not...but it's not a gedan barai. Gedan Barai it's used to protect the groin.
MrKatushya 10 months ago
@MrKatushya Its soto uke, its just litle bit shortend so you do it from your guard and not from all the way back like in kihon, its how its sopposed to be used in real fights. And gedan barai is main defense against mae geri, it should be exelent against thai push kick as well if you don't beleve it just hit your leg with your arm a little bit from the side and you will see :) remember little bit because it hurts lige hell :)
Theseus1000 9 months ago
thats not a uchi uke, thats perhaps an gedan barai but not an uchi uke^^
Macdaita 10 months ago
It's not a block, it's a parry. There is a difference.

Hunga Ga practitioners also ^^
For a punch like this, i would prefer to use Kiu Sao. Bong Sau i prefer for leg kicks and uppercuts. Gum Gao Gin Sao for most hooks.

The harder you block, the more busted up BOTH OF YOU PEOPLE'S arms are gonna be.
JSDominos 1 year ago
@JSDominos you are a retard training and conditioning of the arms make it so easy to block hard and hurt the other person while blocking I trained karate for 13 years and I blocked like this and I never got hurt and always hurt the otehr person. so please reserve your ignorant comments to yourself.
