It is quite strange that some one try to compare this two recorders. this is complete different levels of equipment. but i must say h4 had better stereo.
hi again ;] Can anyone tell me, how does H1 work when it's used with high gain settings, like recording guitar and vocals from distance of 2-3 meters? Is there a lot of hum?
Maybe it's the setting, I don't know, but the H1 sounds a teensy bit dull compared to the dynamic H4N. But for 1/4 the price, the H1 is AMAZING. Plus, nothing a little EQ tweak won't fix to match the H4N.
Not to troll at all, but couldn't placement of mics/recorders have more of an effect than the recorder itself? All units are placed as close as possible, but in my experience (especially with mic'ing electric guitar amps), two or three inches can literally make all the difference.
Just thinking out loud here though. Thanks for posting the video! Well shot and very thoroughly planned. Definitely an interesting concept either way!
@mikelb77 Well, I don't think the main purpose of this video was to showcase the quality... it's more of a comparison, in which case, the most important factor (IMO) would be equal distance instead of optimal recording distance.
Thanks so much for this demonstration! I was up in the air if i should drop the extra coin for the H4, but for what i need the H1 is going to more than sufficient for the difference in cost.
Fantastic test! I have a Zoom H4n and a Zoom H1. Zoom H4n, in comparison, has more bass response. But if I don't record with both, Zoom H1 in manual control level has a good performance. I think You have recorded with Zoom H4n in XY 90*, not XY120*, it's right?
OK, I have to admit my bias -- I want the H1 to win. Maybe I'm doing an injustice to the H4. I don't know. But I do know this.
The H1 retails fr $100 and the H4 for $250. In order to buy the H4, I would need it to sound 150% better than the H1. Clearly, as shown in this video, it doesn't.
h4 appears to have a better dynamic range but thats just EQ, the H1 just misses a bit of presence at the very top and bottom. the H4 has a completely different and more enhanced spacial rendition. H4 seemed to handle the resonance of the chord at the end better too although it may be that it was played more softly. very subtle differences!
I think the H1 sounds better than the H4. H1 seems to have better bass response also. But I think the Zoom H1 level is slightly higher than the H4. So it's not a totally fair apples-to-apples. Need to match levels to with 0.1 dB before you can do an accurate comparison.
to be honest i as im experianced in lots of differant mics the h1 had a warmer sound than the h4 but the h4 had better stereo image and the treble was more controled but so marginally that no one would care
actually i in my eyes, the H1 is the better product.. its cheap, you put it in your pocket, reach your destination, and press record and you have your self a nice high quality recording! The expensive H4n, Fiddling with DSP processors, compressor settings and 4 channel audio, external mic etc etc.. just pulls the whole concept apart! its a pocket recorder for god sake.. not a portable studio.. use it for sketching songs and stuff nothing else. :)
To me H4n has a flatter spectrum and a wider stereo image then the H1. Nothing you cant compensate 90 percent for in post. so if you dont need internal compression and 4 channel rec. external xlr mic. It is not worth the extra money.
Awesome test, but for a wide price difference H1 is just as good in my opinion. I'd be happy with the H1 for the price. The AKG mics sounded best on the Metal guitar in my opinion, but overall the H4n takes its.
It seems like the H1 gave a warmer sound, but the H4Nn gave the widest range in my opinion.
h4n has wider stereo and better dynamics, seems to pick up more sound in the whole of the room. H1 had a lot of highs and more centred sound but its very good.
Please cancorder that was used in this test? The picture is excellent. Thanks if you can answer. PAULINHOFERNANDO/ BRAZIL

Slightly better stereo image on the H1 than with the H4, at least to my ears.

@AndersHass I thought exactly the same. Glad I got the h4n instead of the h1. The H1 is still pretty damn good though.
