This argument is not valid. This argument says that if you agree to affirmative action, you agree to the enrollment of less-qualified minorities. This is not true. Any minority enrolled is definitely qualified! Affirmative Action will allow MORE qualified minorities to be enrolled in place of LESS qualified whites. How is this unfair?

If the top 10% of the scores happen to be submitted by mostly white people, the system will drop the bottom two or three percent of that 10% and replace them with minorities who scored in the bottom 90%. Affirmative action was put into effect to attempt to counteract the HUGE injustices within the American economy and educational system. That has nothing to do with basketball. He ended up living on his own senior year of high school. He now attends my school (IU) by utilizing gov. grants and pays rent and book fees by workin a full time job. He got into school by working hard. Someone shouldn't be able to get into a school over him with say, a 2.0 GPA just because they are black or asian or hispanic.

@jinheff I would have liked to see a better argument from you. 1. is a point, but it could work both ways. 2. sounds like a success for unbiased meritocracy rather than a success for affirmative action. Surely, rather than lowering entry standards (which leads to suspicion of all black graduates abilities) it is better to work with the African-American community to ensure they DO get the correct grades to enter further education, regardless of the fact that such a program is more difficult?

the two are different because in sports they have to stay competitive to beat other teams, but for school, schools don't compete to compete other schools. Unless they have some sort of academic decathlon, but then the teams selected for that aren't based on race.

this a very interesting perspective. i have a hispanic name but i look white, and i got benefits and scholarships for that. i don't think it's fair, but i still took advantage of it. i don't understand how people can take any side definitively, because this is a complex topic. regardless, if there's one thing that's certain, it's that the system is broken.

These people are idiots. Affirmative action is foolish. I am Hispanic and I would never want anything handed to me because of my race. I earned a Mechanical Engineering degree and Job because I earned it. I never once sought a Latino scholarship or found a loop hole that allowed me to attend school at a lower gpa than Caucasian people or sought a job at a company that was forced to hire me based on diversity statistics. I EARNED my positions and accomplishments.

@MisterDrumngun It's not just about government hand-outs. Maybe you've gotten a job in part because the company wanted diversity or your college wanted to increase its hispanic population. Going back to your original statement, maybe you didn't know people were accepting you because of your race.

It is socially advantageous to offer education to impoverished individuals (of any race). This is the building up of a society, the avoidance of plutocracy, etc.
It is not socially advantageous to put more white kids on the basketball team.
