The fire was put out but kept on reignighting due to the magnesium in the area hit. Eventually the USAF destroyed it with a missile.

@cobrabeebop The T-80U was definitely a match to late 1980s M1A1. However the gap turns wider after the collapse of the USSR. (In the 90s, the M1A2, Challenger II and L2A5 are really a whole generation ahead of the East) And yes most Russian tankers aren't as adequately trained as the American.

I just read a few posts. The factual errors are ridiculous. The tank was from C 1/64 AR 3 ID Army, not Marines. It was disabled by an engine fire. It didn't run out of fuel.The crew was not injured (then). The damage seen is from US weapons used to destroy it. If you want to know more, read "Thunder Run" by David Zucchino and Ron Martz. C12 story starts on page 20.

@monkeynuts76 Your probably right, this tank was ahead of a group of other soldiers, then the crew was reported as being ambushed and having to evacuate. Since none of our tankers are dumb enough to just sit there and get shot at by RPG's, I'm assuming they ran out of fuel, seeing as how the Abrams is a gas guzzler, then took an insane amount of RPG's and Recoiless Rifle shots before the crew fought them off with an immobilized, broken tank, that could not do anything. but the crew was safe.

The fire was put out but kept on reignighting due to the magnesium in the area hit. Eventually the USAF destroyed it with a missile.

When the v-packs caught fire and there was no hope of saving it, the tank was intentionally destroyed with thermite grenades. Sometime later it was hit by 1 or 2 of our own maverick missiles. Although technically it was destroyed by enemy "fire", the damage you see was from us to prevent anything of intelligence value being left behind. The crew was evacuated safely, but 2 were later wounded
