Can't we support mothers with whatever method they use to feed their babies? I'm not a bad mom because I bottle fed my sweet babies! Of course breast milk is best! But to the lactivists who offer unsolicited statistics & self-righteous comments to a mother innocently trying to nourish her child with a bottle, suspend your judgment until you know her story. We must treat ALL our sisters with compassion, make sure the facts are out there, & be thankful that it's 2008 and we have options!
The point of this video is to stop the discrimination against breastfeeding mothers and to help moms feel better about nursing in public. If you feed your child with a bottle that is certainly your choice. This video is not about slamming bottle feeding, it is about how sad it is that someone would actually NOT breastfeed simply out of shame or embarrassment. Hopefully that is not why you are bottle feeding.
I was, in fact, shamed into bottle feeding my babies, against my better judgment, by my doctor, our pediatrician, my family, and THE LACTATION SPECIALIST at the hospital my boys were delivered at in Chicago, IL. Though we've moved to a more progressive community in a different state, I cry almost nightly 3.5 years after their births because I still feel like a failure and a bad mom. Seeing this is hard. Moms like me need to feel supported, too!
WHAT? That is so sad. I am so sorry you had to go through that. I also gave my first son formula for 6 weeks. Then I went to total breastfeeding. I feel fortunate that I had the support of my former LLL member mother. I don't know what it would have been like if all the voices were against me. At least I had her!
By the way, my mom fed my older brother formula, and she does not feel guilty. She knows that it was not her fault and she just needed better support. This video is supposed to be support for moms. I am sorry it made you feel bad. I hope you will take some time to write to the hospital or doctors and express your disappointment to them. I know I need to do the same and just haven't yet. It might make you feel better.
Though I reached out for bf support for weeks, I was encouraged to bottle feed both my boys by my doctor, my extended family, and the so-called lactation specialist at the hospital were they were delivered. We've since moved to a more BF-friendly town and I'm afraid to join any mother's groups or feed in public because of a little glass bottle. The discrimination is on both sides! It's important to be aware of that. BTW, the hospital was Little Co. of Mary Hospital ("The Baby Hospital") in IL.
It's never that simple. If I knew then what I know now I would have reached out for support from the right people. We've since moved to a BF-friendly town where I thought I wouldn't be judged and I could not have been more wrong. The discrimination is on both sides and it's important to be aware of that.
I have this set to approve all comments because of some nasty porn spammers. Sorry it took so long. So it sounds like you have twins? I am sorry you feel judged. It's not fair either way. Every woman should be able to feed her child in peace.
Thanks for the video. I breastfeed my six mnth old son and plan on doing so until at least 1 year. I think I would like to continue until around 18 mnths but know what a hard time my family would give me. Not my husband or his family but my sisters/parents.
I am so glad I stuck it out and continued breastfeeding. there is no other joy like it. I hope I can ignore the ignorant people and keep going 15-18 months. Istarted out going to my car to b/f when I was out in piblic and now I'll do it just about any where. I do cover with a blanket. I have come a really long way about caring what others are thinking.
Now when my baby is hungry in a store or some other place I b/f as discreetly as possible. Our society is so ridiculous when it comes to breastfeeding. My own sister asked me isnt he getting a little big for that! He's 6 month old for goodness sake. How sad
I know I am starting to get the "you're still breastfeeding?" with my almost 8 month old.. yes I am and I will be as long as it is still working for both of us.. it should be fun when he is 3 lol
Brilliant, gorgeous, well done, we know we are doing what's right, don't let them drag you down.I wish i saw videos like this when i was struggling with people's ignorant stupid comments.xx
What the heck? Every other country I've visited(and there are a lot, retired Navy) Does not have the attitude towards breast feeding as the US!My own daughter breast fed my grandson with me in the room. (My living room). But, according to "some people" we are perverts? Someone's a pervert, but it isn't us!!! =Stefan=
Awsome! Thanx!
I get so sick of hearing people say that our bodies are wrong!
That their perversion and fear and shame based lifestyle are right!
You Rock, Thanx again
