Obviously Malkmus and Kannberg made Gary Young memorable, not the other way around. Slanted and Enchanted is one of the best albums of the decade, but so are CRCR and WZ. Neither would have been made with Gary doing headstands in the background.
Closely listen to an Inception dvd made prior to the January the 8th Tucson shooting, especially around the dialogue, "Do It." Check my quotes for more information.
Oh my god seeing this song live was amazing, Im 18 and thought I was doomed to never see them. Alas the boys came back.... I am so proud to have been there...
Saw Pavement in SC on this tour and Gary was so fucking drunk by the time they played. He was wearing only his Rocky and Bowinkle boxers and the band had to count off for him. He tried to stand on his kit but feel...its was funny as hell but sad in some way. But one of the top 5 shows I've ever seen and that's saying a lot....
S&E for me. CRCR is really great too but a little bit pedestrian and clean for me at times. a little bit too worked out. s&e is so great to me cuz its off the cusp and feels unprofessional and that they're making it up as they go along
no, it's not just you. Gary was a much more "interesting" player and came up with cooler stuff. But, man, was he erratic. West was at least solid, if a bit lacking in any sort of subtlety or dynamics. I was actually at a couple shows where Malkmus was visibly pissed at West for his hammer-it-hard-all-the-time style.
I have to disagree. Gary's drumming was not special in any drumming sense, and his fills were common. Steve brought a professional style and was much more dependable. Gary's crazy attitude and reputation is what set him apart, and he had an allure. Nothing special, really.
I just think its hilarious that a aging hippy was rocking out with some young suburban guys, he pretty much took the band hostage.
Early 90's I worked in ULU in London. The afternoon of the day Pavement were playing, Gary Young walks in with all his stuff in a carrier bag, and orders half a lager. That night he was just brilliant.

@mistersleeepy It looks like a P-bass. Plus, he plays a P-bass in Sonic Youth too.

I love this, but my favorite album, and I'm one of a few, is Wowee Zowee. And the main reason is..I can't put a finger on it.
allanosterm 3 years ago 3
@allanosterm Wowee Zowee and S&E are basically tied.

Clearly S&E is better, but both rock and I can hardly blame someone for liking CRCR more ;)

S&E is more "important" to 90s rock, but come on.

Is it just me or is Gary Young just a much better drummer than Steve West? No offense to West, but Young can play, drunk, stoned or otherwise!

West was much more solid than gary, besides gary pulled a gun on malkmus
Lorenzodogg 4 years ago
west was much more solid, but could he play with one of his sticks in his mouth--1:53.

pavement became a different band when gary quit. steve west was mediocre and dull in comparison.

for sure. a big part of what made Slanted a special record was Gary's drumming. Those constant rolling drum fills are so distinctive.

I would give my fingers and toes to go back in time and see them circa Slanted and Enchanted.
