I'm from Costa Rica and I grew up listening to this song on one of the local radio stations. So even though it was from an American singer it is part of our heritage and tradition. God Bless Perry! His voice must be now leading the angels choir.
Perry Como was a wonderful performer, but he really wrote the book on christmas songs. Who can you think of that did any of his christmas songs better than Perry? Nobody! He reminds us all of all that was once right and good in this country in a simpler and better time. Thank you Mr. Como and rest in peace.
This very version of Ave Maria has been played every 6 hours in “Radio Reloj” of Costa Rica since it was released. They haven’t changed the track since then because it’s a tradition. I’m delightful too finally find it here.
You are correct. This is Perry's superior original 1949 recording of "Ave Maria," conducted by Mitchell Ayres. Because its 4:38 length would not fit on one side of the then-standard 10-inch single 78rpm disc, it was released on a 12-inch, paired with Como's version of "The Lord's Prayer" on the flipside.
1949 was the year that RCA Victor introduced their microgroove 45rpm discs, so this lovely performance was also made available that year in the new 7-inch format....pressed on blue vinyl!
