    TOP 5 COUNTRY STARS!

  • True Bard of the Southerner-- agree--Hank wrote and sang about what he saw, felt, experienced. He's my hero because Hank was able to rise above his birth situation (birth defect called spinal bifida plus extreme poverty) and was able to have a hugely successful musical career. And to me all of Hank's pain, alcohol and drug abuse are a tremendous part of what made him such a classic. If not all, most of us can see ourselves reflected back in the mirror of a Hank Sr tune.

  • The song is not talking about depression. It is talking about the path he chose and what it cost him. His wife and their marriage were lost to his drinking and pain killers. Eventually his life was lost to it years of living rough and ramblin. I am 32 I know what the song is about and it is not easy for those around you to watch as you take this path, though I don't use drugs I don't turn down a drink and ramble sunset to sunrise.

  • Hank is a legend still

  • 2 people are stuck on that lost highway.

  • He passed away in WV in the back seat of a Cadillac... Ya know some

Cowboys like. Me go out like that

  • Thanks man I'm a huge hank fan thanks died

  • I rode the lonely train for many a year...this music helped every fuckin mile

  • Very FUCKING true ...Shelton brings his family talents and I think his Granddaddy is digging it...

  • I am 32 and lost in the world right now. I had it all under control but now I live in agony. These demons are eating me alive.

  • Hank knew the Devil rides the Lost Highway.

He also knew the only way off of it was the Word.

  • Now I can relate to this song when I was in my teens n early 20 I was lost in life didnt know what to do ... Then when I got of it I felt gd n happy I think the songs talking about depression. Hank was beyond his years. He sang w heart n soul. Now I'm in my late 20s w a wife n child its to bad hank left us when he did but @ least he left in his prime !!! Sure if hank live longer who knows he prolly would hav had hundreds of singles n platinum albums gold records.

  • the end of the road...xxxx..good people only....thank you

  • worth more than gold. whoever disliked this song should feel special. theres a song Hank Jr. did for you. If you dont like Hank Williams.....well just listen to the song for the rest.

  • This should have way more views.

  • the song is awesome, and the description is a really nice job at putting the feelings Hank's music evokes into words, cheers to all strangers out there

  • A vocal teacher pretty much summed it up to

me once when I asked her what makes a good singer, she used Hank as the best example

"By no means did Hank Williams Sr. have a sensational voice nor did he ever take lessons, but the reason why his voice will send shivers down your spine and put a grown man in tears is because he was a lonely man singing about his broken heart, and it all came right out through his music."

This is music that has true meaning, there's no way of getting around that.

  • A devils doing to take out the only person that could have brought all of the world to peace.A sensational man gone too soon. What would Hank do today if he lived?I surely do miss him and his music.Only if he could lived longer.Thx Hank Williams (Hiram King Williams)

  • This is great!! Hank was awesome....

  • If he hadn't had such and ornery woman, his songs might not have been so darn sad, or so good.

  • This was written by Leon Payne who was a favorite of Hank's. Hank though believes every word and gives the song real soul.

  • well, it's good to know someone likes hank as much as i do! thanks for the video and words...

  • hank williams died outside montgomery alabama, not in indiana or west virginia

  • your words ring true just like hank's music there'll never be another. my grandma listened to hank and I do too I'm the only of the grandchildren that do lol

  • Hank didnt die SOMEWHERE IN INDIANA, he died in OAK HILL WEST VIRGINIA.

  • @goldtoothjake hank died in alabama buddy. outside of montgomery.

  • @goldtoothjake hank died outside montgomery alabama, not west virginia or idiana

  • this songs crosses the lines of and influences all rock, blues, country, grunge, etc. ..., well the ones that matter anyways

  • very nice but thought he died in West Virginia?? just askin

  • i am a turkish kurd and love this song so much .......this man was clearly a genius

  • hey stop the interpretations and listen

  • too slow

  • Outstanding What a tribute to the greatest country or any singer in the world. This and wedding bells are the best Thanks from a guy named Hank

  • I logged in just to thank you, after watching this for making such a vid. best one i've seen .

  • Its so strange and sad that the crowning touch to many of these legends is their untimely deaths wether it be Hank Williams, Buddy Holly or Patsy Cline and it is this, aside from their body of work, that gives them a touch of something special that transcends all the others. Almost as if it was meant to be somehow?

  • Hank williams was the greatest singer in the history of country. Ive been listenin to his music sense as long as i can remember. great video

  • Could any of us ever imagine what great songs this man could of gave us to listen to. What a shame we had to lose such a strong, powerful voice so young. What a voice....

  • "somewhere in Indiana"?? Hank died in Oak Hill, West Virginia I'll have you to know; Google Ole Hank and learn something!

  • Hank was a genious and his music 'feels' good but so does heroin. I love to hear his music but that doesn't mean that this isn't self-indulging melodrama. The hypothalamus in the brain can create natural endogenous opoids during intense emotions (like singing) that can lead to an addiction of a wide range of neurostimulants including alcohol. I would go as far as to say that his music worked like opium on him and his listeners, benefitial in certain conditions and detrimental in other.

  • Ummmm, yeh, he died in Mt Hope, West Virginia, Ace

  • @jesusmints104 Yep, on his way to do New Years Day show in Canton Ohio.

  • Hmm some flaws in your opening statement, you said "Hank Williams WAS the greatest COUNTRY singer there ever WAS" The CORECT statement would be "Hank Williams IS the greatest singer of ALL GENRES that there ever was, AND EVER WILL BE" Thank you and god bless

  • i'm a huge JOHNNY CASH fan but johnny is not better HANK and johnny are the greatest and as for elvis hahaha!!!!!

  • Thats all in your own opinion i just started listening to Hank this Summer and I've been listening to Johnny Cash since 2006 and Elvis for 13 years.

  • i've been listening to johnny for 26 years but he's still not better than hank but he is great also

  • Well Like I said, Its all in your own opinion.

  • Comment removed

  • same with you

  • Yeah i know

  • I've been listening to both Hank and Johnny for over 50 years, and they are both great, but the true test is TIME. Will people be talking about Johnny 50+ years after his death as they are Hank. My bet is that Hank will be remembered long after Johnny.

  • I've been listening to both Hank and Johnny for over 50 years, and they'er both great. But the true test is TIME. Will people be talking about Johnny 50+ years from now as they are Hank? I don't think so.

  • idk man, i really think its going to b what part of the country u live in 5o yrs from now. i think most of the southern states will still talk about him. hell theres a bar by my house in tx, that has a pic of cash with his guitar painted on the building.

  • HE WAS GREAT!

  • WRONG!!!

It was Johnny Cash, Johnny Cash was better anyway.

  • @Expozane

    WRONG!!!!!!

Hm, I'm gonna have to disagree with you my friend, Johnny Cash is not better.

  • Johnny Cash IS better. If you go to Google and search 100 Greatest Country Singers you'll find Hank Williams in 2nd and Johnny Cash was 1st because he was better. Plus Hank Williams's Voice was all wrangly and stuff and Johnny Cash had a deep voice and it was good and The only only voice that would of been better than Johhny Cash's is Elvis's voice. And that proves that Johnny Cash was better.

  • first of all, i cant even believe im getting involved with one of these stupid youtube arguments, 2nd - why is there any discussion on who's better? cash and hank were both amazing on their own levels. to say that one was better than the other is just a sign of your own musical stupidity. 3rd - get a life and enjoy the music, take it in, sit a while and then realize that arguing over who's music is better than who's on youtube is just a stupid waste of time.

  • Okay i'm gonna tell you a long story,

In my spare time I tell people off on videos just to see their reactions.

  • You need to learn something of thought, value, and pristine quality. Johnny was truly great, but not in Hank's league. Popularity alone is almost a guarentuer of less than the finest effort, so google is useless, a joke. The finest singer maybe was never really known, but Hank is in a league all his own, an ability all his own, good, better, best in many areas. Each really great singer carves out his/her own place. Nowadays' 'produced' music hides faults preventing ability from emerging.

  • Wow, are you a Music Historian?

By the way,it wasn't just Google it was a site that was a professional music site like Rollingstone.

  • actually williams died somewhere between knoxville tn and oak hil wv. most likely either on highway 11 or before they departed from knoxville

  • I love how his Recording company delt with him. Those bastards sent a good singer to his grave way to early! they saw that Hank was an alcoholic and they only cared about the money he broaght in! I can't say as I really feel bad for the record companies not makin' any money off of him.Pirates always find a way to pay tribute to the true artists!

  • @shaolinloser Well, the Grand Ole Opry is cashing in on his name every Saturday and they haven't the guts to reinstate him. There's not a show that goes by that someone attempts to cover a Hank Sr. song. REINSTATE HANK!!!

  • Did you slow this recording down? I've got this same track on his 40 greatest hits but this sounds soo much slower... i really like it this way though.

  • It's not supposed to be this slow, he downloaded it somewhere.

  • Stunning! One of the most bracing, powerful pieces of music which speaks life's Truths better than today's almost fake country music. Hank . . . goosebumps . . . pains and joy ripping through us . . . tears.

  • I agree. Every now and then, a true 'Bard of the People' emerges to speak directly to the heart, though often through technically imperfect means. This is to say that they communicate with an exalted essence of right brain fortitude in the Dionysian sense of artistry, as opposed to the Appolonian sense of technical perfection and lofty circumstance.

Some other true American bards of the 20th century include Slim Lightning Hopkins and Bob Dylan.

  • I appreciate your high-minded caring about Hank's superlative artistry carried to such strong lengths. I'd say you're right about those others, but, for me Dylan doesn't carry Hank's weight, or Tennessee Ernie Ford's. Try listening to The Red Army Choir's version of "Sixteen Tons". Again you're so right about Hank's deep feelings beyond most people's ability to See.

  • you said it better than anyone could have in ur video bud! i love it and im sure hank does too if he's lookin down on us all..

  • It is sad that he died at a young age but he knew it was comming just listen to his music.

  • The thing about Hank is this: He was a real person with real feelings, and real people with real felings can feel him.

  • couldnt have said that any better.........thank you.

  • The way you described the rare essence of such a great singer was truly beautiful. well put.

  • Thank you

  • @bootleggersouth Hank Sr, died in the back of his car in WV not fucking Indiana!!!!! but otherwise good video just do a lil more research

  • Sad he died at such a young age. He changed the world and will always be remembered as king of Country Music.

  • Dude....For real.......Where it concerns music, I've NEVER read a better message on ANY youtube video EVER. Thank you for being you and thinking the way that you think. Represent. Reach the masses.......or let the light of the message be on your tongue until you die. Sincerely.

  • I appreciate the hell out of Hank Sr...and now III drives me wild. shoot gotta give props to Hank Jr for having III too. who cares if not everyone knows about or appreciates it? our secret!

  • It seems to me that what transcends the mechanical aspect of musical performance is the' feeling' which some performers put into their labor. It is a matter of soulful energy.

Those who have ears to hear such matters can find this profound quality of Passion in all types of music, from Janis Joplin to Yehudi Menuhin, from Jerry Lee Lewis to Michael Jackson...and let's not forget Bob Dylan.

Since I was raised a rural Southerner, I'm more attuned to the way the Hanks do it.

  • Hank Is so legendary. But if we talk about that he wrote himself in his songs, this is true,if one reporter asked from Hank's female friend what hank really look like, she asked listen to his songs. And a true hardcore Hank have seen a life bad page. Paris Hilton and other idiots like her, don't like Hank because they haven't seen life.Hank dead at young age,but "really old' when he died mentally. His life burned like a long candle,he saw everything.
  • It's almost as if leon payne wrote this song about Hank himself

  • To be honest, I spent most of my life thinking Hank wrote it about himself. I reckon the two kinda understood one another.

  • Hank Williams is the hands down best singer song writer ever, and i cant see a time when there will be anybody better. His talents are very underappreciated,he wasn't a saint by no-means but that's what made his music so good.you did a very good job with this video and i thank you

  • Thank you, and I agree with your assessment of Hank.

  • couldnt have said it better, long live " Luke the Drifter"

  • nowadays people think that

    Madonna & Michael Jackson

    are legends(R.I.P)but the real

legend is here - HANK WILLIAMS

He was the first american superstar.

  • i wish hank was here 2 wrap a guitar around somebodys damn head reAlly and if yea ever read this hank jr or 3 try 2 look me up and get my damn ass out of this hole im in for a damn while talk 2 yea later boys

  • Hank III probably would have agreed with you, his Grandfather was his inspiration...

  • GREAT SONG... shut up on the ignorant commentary

    he worked hard

played with a lot of musicians that also

    took music seriously

    this is his job.

    what's yours?

to lie about your heroes? without actually learning about them... i'm fine with that... sounds like myth

    or a new good song

  • Such a great song . Great job on the video .

  • Thank you

  • Great Video, I have four different versions of this song done by Hank.

    All are excellent!

  • There's one version Where Hank, Hank JR, and Hank III are all dubbed in together.

  • ..aww yes, I also have the "Father & Son" overdubb duet LP from the 60's. ..guess that makes 6 different versions. wow I didn't realize that many...

  • truly the best died way to young, the sad part is that if he was around today most "country fans" would shun his music because it isnt the country(pop) they want they rather have keith urban and kenny chesney play electric guitar with a huge band and all the effects id take luke the drifter or hank and the drifting cowboys anyday!

  • if ole hank was around today he would tell modern country to kiss his rebel ass !!

  • I tend to agree. He was a rebel in the truest sense of the word. He spoke from the heart in a world where that has become a lost art.

  • thats damn right

  • Youre right of course, when I re-read my piece it made me sound like one of those old guys who think music stopped with Hank, and of course it didnt.

Johnny Cash Waylon Merle Willy etc moved things forward. If Hank had lived to my age would he have been eclipsed?

He wrote great songs for his period, and as a result has become almost immortal and his songs are ever-green but would he have been able to keep the writing going with the drink problem? Well never know of course.

    Joe

  • This is the speed I remember when I first heard it around 1950. Like many of Hank's recordings later reissues appear to have been speeded up.

I know that over the years I have had to speed up, because bands won't play this slowly, with the result I can never put the original feeling in to the songs.

At 74( and an old English hillbilly singer) I'm delighted that someone else has commented the speed, because I'd begune to think it was me.

  • It has been my experience than when you're picking in a barroom, drunks want songs sped up enough so they can dance to them---or rub around on each other and call it dancing lol.

  • It's interesting to read the comment about the speed of this recording. I'/ve been kicking around since Hank was alive, and when I heard this version my thougts were - that's how I first remember it.

Along with many other recordings of various songs over the years, I've had to speed up my delivery because bands I've sung with are much faster, which stops me putting real feeling into the slongs.

  • even a punk just hast to love hank

  • this so reminds me of my Daddy. Bet he's up in heaven jamming with Hank. Awesome music

  • He just told it like it was, simple and clear.............Shout out from Cullman,Al

  • Is it just me or does this sound like it's slowed down a bit?

  • This particular recording apparently precedes the version most commonly heard. I had originally made this video to "May You Never Be Alone Like Me," but when it was rejected by YouTube, I had to find a soundtrack they would accept, and apparently they have no problems with this version.

  • amen to that

  • the ragged hallow sound is remisent of that of J Cash each had that distinct sound that is sooo much missingin the music we now hear.

  • Hank has been in my consciousness my whole life... I respect him now as much as I did when I was a pup.. At my age that is saying something.... What a singer and songwriter..

  • what shame 1700 views, for the greatest songwriter ever to live.

  • Your sermon is a distraction from Hank's song of advice. You're using his song as a pulpit.

  • Well done!

  • Hank was the greatest songwriter of all time

  • Hank died outside of oakhill wv.

  • Great Video, Well Done. By the way, Hank ain't dead or lost, He's still alive somewhere.

Thanks for making and sharing 5 Stars *****

  • well done hank's the man yes sir. FORDROAD Australia PS We have Rednecks a plenty down here in the great south land.We appreciate a legend , JR CASH, Patsy etc. Keep the great work up old mate .

  • God Vless ole hank!

  • beautiful just beautiful thank u

  • Great Job! I especially enjoyed the words that accompanied the vid. Did you write all that? That's awesome.

  • Thank you. Yes, I've liked Ol' Hank all of my life.

  • Well this is just a fine tribute if ever I saw one. Sr is and always has been my favorite country singer too - the garbage "country" they play on the radio these days is just an embarrassment. I gotta admit I also really like his grand boy's sound; Im a pretty big Hank III fan also. Nice job Bootlegger. 5*

  • Thank you my friend
