Actually, native americans would put up the index and ringfinger (the way someone would flip another off today), and that meant they'd shoot ya with a bow. A basic 'fuck you' statement, really. Well, when the not-so-natives got to the states if they took the natives as hostage, or imprison them--they'd chop off their index finger so they couldn't shoot a bow. The indians still used the 'shoot ya with a bow' finger thing, but they could only use their middle finger. That's how it originated.
