This defeat cost United the Div. 1 title, for it went to their fierce rivals City, who won at Newcastle on the same day. Still, United had the consolation of winning the EC that same season.

I think the word you're looking for is 'choked'. The Man Utd players couldn't handle the pressure of the occasion and choked it :-)

The only reason Man Utd won the EC in 1968 was because they played a load of minor teams no one has even heard of!
