  • Poor guy...he was very brave taking all those synths on the road...but sure he could have afforded some backups...memory moogs have a bad reputation even when new.

  • Lo chistoso es que la gente cree que los sintetizadores tocan solos, NO primero hay que programarlos, de todo a todo, el sonido, la secuencia, los arpegios recuerden que JMJ usa equipos analógicos y no tienen botón de "reset"

  • least you now its live lol

  • I think he can get away with this from time to time. Given the age of the equipment it is expected. I would love to se him in a venus like this. I don't like the suer huge concert environment.

  • He should probably just give up. That performance is as lousy as it gets.

  • Hahahaha tipical Jarre thing. The problem is that the last time he played a plugged analog synth was 35 years ago. From those days to today, is all about playback. Every musician and analog synth enthusiast knows that. Just watch any other video of him.

And regarding the calibration of a 2600 without any reference or documentation... oh come on! He has'nt any idea about it.

  • @kapiza Yeah, "every musician knows that". "Half knowledge" I call that. Because professional live VIDEOS are usualy edited after, made perfect, so those can not be trusted in this question. Go to a JMJ concert or watch some of the non professional recordings of the last few years and you'll see, at least since this Oxygene tour it is live (meaning keyboard players and programmed sequencers produce the sound live). Just watch the live performance in Monaco here in YouTube and you'll see.

  • @kapiza wrong 100%. its live since late 2007. everyone knows that except for you.

  • @KiopGenJin Wow! thanks for the info! Thanks Jarre FOR 40 YEARS OF PLAYBACK. It doesn't matter how many lives he plays today, he's credibility was lost meny years ago. But anyway, enjoy it! I did enjoyed him when I believed in him.

  • @kapiza He's lost no credibility at all that I can see.

  • 0:19. . .a crew what? And what song is he playing when the memory Moog goes out of tune?

  • @Synthesist94 Oxygen 2 :) the part of the flute solo

  • Use a damn Sampler when playing live; same sound + perfect tune and no sane soul will question it; I like him but this is unnecessay bravado to use instable analog gear; or just install backup synths! Peace

  • Same sound? *rofl* I suppose, that is already technically impossible...

  • @Aetila That is the beauty of analog gear. That not everything sounds the same. I mean we could listen to CDs then, if we want that, no need for a live concert then, don't we?

  • @Lofote

I mean it's not funny for the audience (paying people) to watch him struggle with a stupid synth. If I was him I would have installed a digital/hybrid synth or a stable synth as a back-up in case of a melt-down! Or buy 5 Polymoogs! :-)

  • @Aetila that sure seems like a good idea

  • Yeah,it's an analog synthesizer problem. The battery has to low. He's want to try that all work.

  • Эту коробку пора на помойку)))

  • He IS improvising! That's what IMPROVISING really is...

  • Analog problems :PP

  • Well, those were some nice 'quacks' as you put it :)

  • Simply great. The Master and his analog treasures!

  • One bad incident never comes alone - I feel for JMJ :-/

  • I bet he started an argument with Bob Moog after that.

  • Yes. Moogs and Arps doesn't stay in tune, but Korgs stay just fine;)

  • oh good im not the only one who`s been there! its a nightmare!

  • ooh .. analog wheels yes yes they can trick you time to time I can tell you!

So if the pitch is not positioned correctly back due to the years of mechanical using...

It is a very brave thing to have these monsters on stage. Yes.

Possibly it was a big pain for him loosing tune this way.

Not bad if you always have in your "pocket" this: keyfame dot com

  • I like JMJ, a lot, but FFS, why on earth is he still using antiquated old crap, that can, did, and does go wrong... regularly!?!?

I don't want to hear a load of crap about how good this kit WAS, because I know how good it WAS, but three decent, modern synths, and a sequencer, will do everything he needs to do, and much, much more!

This old, analogue stuff has had it's day, it's time to move on.

  • @DrHerbz My friend I totally agree with you. I have used all those analogue synths both live and in the studio and I have to admit that synths today are much much better. Yes the Moog had its own unique sound, but the synths today can play thousands of presets, samples and unique sounds and the possibilities of creating your own sounds are endless. They are also more reliable!!!

  • @DrHerbz He only used this touring setup just for the 30th anniversary of the Oxygene album. It was just to pay homage by revisiting the particular instruments and gear he used and still owns when he originally wrote the music back in the 70's. For many Oxygene fans I think it's kind of nostalgic and very cool to see and hear these old synthesizers being performed on once again.

  • @DrHerbz I agree. He could donate it's "antiquated old crap" to me ;-)

  • This is good, such mishaps prove the music is actually played live. Love it!

  • He Knows what he is doing!

  • omg - the poor guy

man that must suck especially live. Good thing hes a genious with that analog gear

  • How much money does that guy freakin' have?

  • TO SEE HOW IT CAN GO WRONG AND NOT EVEN JMJ IS PERFECT MAKES ME FEEL OK ABOUT MY MUSIC LOL

  • BRILLIANT TO SEE HOW IT CAN GO WRONG AND NOT EVEN JMJ IS PERFECT!!

  • It just goes to show, those old synths are difficult to play live. It makes it all the more impressive when things go right.

  • analog synths were nightmares to work with live

  • Poor JMJ... I think some people of the audience have understood what's happening on stage, but not all ! That's really funny. He'is incompetent to improvise anything ! Thanks to the background musicians and the clapping he's safe ! Anyway Vintage synths are great forever. But I prefer Vangelis about live performance :)

  • @uptocom I've seen Jarre playing this entire concert, and many more (even private) concerts, he sure can improvise, but needed to get the Moog tuned again, cause this vid is only part of an entire concert where the moog is needed in more then just this one song. By the way, he owns this analog studio setup twice.

  • LOOOOL

  • hahahah

  • I wonder who filmed the scene... Someone from the JMJ staff?

  • Oy! I have been there so many times! Analog Synths are amazing and their sound is indispensable in my music but what a pain in the butt they can be! Especially with tuning, oy...and JmJ is more of a perfectionist then me. I can only imagine the amount of tweaking he has to endure.

  • The ARP acts exactly like my girlfriend. 20 minutes to get it running.

The MemoryMoog acts exactly like my mother...I try to retune, but is always out of the right way.

  • Fuck the audience clapping. Poor JMJ, I bet some days he must just wonder why he bothers

  • I'm sure most of the audience didn't know what's happening and JMJ is just creating something wild! =P So it's all cool =)

  • The audience clapping? - boo to them!

  • Man, early in my musical training, i had just a tiny bit of exposure to Moog synths, noooooo way! More power to these guys!

  • Sounds better? Because VR synth can´t replicate every little flaws of analog circuitry.

  • Good example of old electronics. Expect everything. Smoke, out of tune, sparks...but it´s still sound better than PC based Vrsynth

  • I love that sound what none PC based Virtual-synth can´t replicate.

  • modular analogs are a huge pain in the ass.

  • It's a wonder he ever got anything done! LOL.

  • Beim Lintronics Memorymoog wäre es sicher nicht passiert. So sind sie halt, solche Instrumente brauchen Liebe.

Old analog Synths needs much love, I know;-)))

  • is there any way he could re-place that or re-built one alike?....

  • Bravo Francis!!! :D

  • Und da sag mal einer, dass elektronische Musikinstrumente kein "Leben" in sich hätten.

Absolute Klasse. Hier kann man nur erahnen, wie schwierig es ist, mit Synthesizern zu arbeiten.

  • Ahhh... analog synths are like women... they can be such a hassle! :D

  • I like the clapping! I think they think he is improvising!

  • lol

  • no, they know what's going on and they are trying to support him :)

  • @arhaznook

No, I was in the audience this day, we started clapping to encourage JMJ during this bad time :)
