  • Bob Dylan and Neil Young were no match for Johnny Cash.

  • @Entropy56 oh I'm sure.

  • @Entropy56 apples and elephants

  • @MurphmanCometh Which one is the elephant?

  • afro-american

  • i didn't know Bill Bellecheck was a rock legend!

  • I think don mclean is definately up there with Neil and bob. He's written some of the most amazing lyrics I've ever heard.

  • On the other hand, Neil's songs are ageless, maybe because his lyrics are written in such a personal way. I still found many of songs deeply connected to me. "Thrashers" is currently my favorite.

  • @NeilYoungLive71

Hell yeah. Thrasher was the song that first woke me up to Neil Young. That song is like a 600 page novel condenced into 5 minutes. Then I heard "Out of the Blue" and there was no going back.

  • I saw a lot of comparisons of Neil Young vs. Bob Dylan here. Music is a personal thing, same goes with religion. In my mind I try not to compare any two artists. They may make similar music, but the experiences/moments that inspired them to write the music are completely un-correlated. Having said that, I found Bob's lyrics are a little more generation-specific. Born in the 80s, I found it hard to really understand many his songs because I didn't live through the 60s.

  • Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Kurt Cobain, John Lennon.

  • @Valaument kurt cobain= overated, drugged out hack. DYLAN,Tom waits, springstein, leonard cohen, willie dixon, randy newman

  • @MrPernell27 you shouldn't down someone's opinion because everyone is different. But it is cool you feel that way (even though you insulted someone's entire career. btw I actually like Cobain along with the other names you listed.

  • @iMovT actually i didn't down anyone's opinion. everyone is entitled to it no matter how wrong they may be. i simply gave my opinion of their opinion as you did to me

  • @MrPernell27 Not over rated. He was a shitty guitar a that, but he's one of the most influencial players.

  • Joni Mitchell.

  • When I first clicked on to the picture I thought it was Jessie Ventura.

  • i nevr like dylan his face and song it is to far form me little italian from the south

  • Neil keeping it real. What cool fucking guy.

  • Why is Dylan great? He took advantage of a social counter-culture to make money. Yeah, that's what makes a great society. It's people like him who perpetuate society the way it is and undermine any real change.

  • @RayL1983 Listen to Dylan and you will realize that he is great

  • Bono, Springsteen...that's about it. Sting comes on the fringes. Johnny Cash used to write some good ones.

  • @MrUndercoverblues ...You would put Bono up there with Dylan & Young?????

  • @Torkgasmicgirl8 for songwriting...yes, absolutely. without question.

  • @Torkgasmicgirl8 If you look at the body of song-writing Bono has put together over the 30+ years it is staggering. Not every single song is a golden nugget, but so many are simply brilliant. "The Boss" already said Bono's one of the the best song writer in modern music! Bet Dylan would agree as well. BTW_ - I also like Joni Mitchell, but no longevity.

  • @MrUndercoverblues .....We'll just agree to disagree then...Peace!

  • @Torkgasmicgirl8 cheers!

  • I do that on all my road trips!

  • Mr.Young and Dylan two of my favorites.

  • Afro American???????????????

  • Bob could've been born in Canada. Hibbing's very close to the border.

  • He's great but no way is he equal to dylan. Come on now.

  • @brnoamik In some ways he was better than Dylan.

  • @brnoamik It wasn't said that they we're equal. No musician is equal in the sense that they are the same. What was stated was that Neil Young and Bob Dylan are set among the greatest writers.

  • I appreciate Neil's candor. He, like Bob Dylan, expresses a universal truth -- no one owns the "soul" of music. I think that John Lennon tried to convey that, as well. Music a gift to us all from The Infinite Being.

  • @mickeymousebiker1 Cmon.... music is a gift? Then why do we have to buy it. John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Niel all took money for the music and lived in BIG mansions.

This so-called gift you speak about made these guys millions. A gift doesnt cost money.

  • @marcusdolby1 you don't need to buy music to listen to music, you can play music, etc. music is a gift and you would probably have to be a big music fan or a musician to understand. john lennon, bob dylan, neil young, etc, all were where we are in life, they were buying music just like us in homes probably smaller then ours and decided music could give them a better living because of their talent and passion. i'd say thats a gift.

  • @Light0fJah420 I hear you and and although I respect your opinion, I respectfully disagree.

  • Neil was born and brought up in Canada, and has since become an international star, so he has to expect to be asked idiotic questions about himself. Famous people are used to that. It goes with the territory. But, not to worry. As a Canadian, Neil should be OK with stupid questiions. Canadians get asked dumb questions all the time, usually by tourists who think Canada is still a howling wilderness full of French Canadian trappers, mad prospectors, and crazy hockey players.

  • Neil Young has been humbled and is a honest man.

  • Saw them both live, Neil, the friendly entertainer, warm contact with the audience.

Bob, the cold entertainer, doesn't smile, doesn't talk to the audience.

  • @ronaldsneek Saw Bob this year. Smiling, gesturing to the crowd, being every bit as cool as I thought he would be. Anyone who has seen his previous concerts should know not to expect anything more.

    I blast Bob when I'm driving, I'm 27.

  • I love you Neil

  • totally stupid question, idiot interviewer, you get a chance to sit with Neil Young and then you ask him this crap

  • totally stupid question, idiot interviewer

  • Does anyone else think Neil Young is just the canadian Bob Dylan

  • @LazyBoyN They're very different songwriters but if I had to pick a "Canadian Bob Dylan" which I don't like the idea of I'd go with Leonard Cohen. My favorite songwriter of all time.

  • The America includes Canada. We in the US are of the United States of America.

  • When faced with lifes difficult decisions I just stop and ask myself.......what would Neil do? What a modest and genuine guy. And a real awesome Canadian!

  • nothing against Neil, and I love Neil, but really, just the way it is, no one is in the same league as Bob.

  • Another American legend gone. :-,,,( May he RIP.

  • @Enyateas

    1. Hes Canadian, not American

    2. Hes not dead

  • @brettonlee Canadians are Americans.

  • @BillWeekly Would you mind justifying that statement?

  • @TheNeidermayer

Germany is part Europe, therefore Germans are Europeans.

Canada is part of the Americas, therefore Canadians are Americans.

  • @bedarder That's some beautiful logic there, buddy. By that, I can say that all people from Egypt are African, because Egypt is part of Africa.

  • @TheNeidermayer

And you would be technically correct in doing so. I'm not saying that Canadians call themselves Americans, or that Germans call themselves Europeans, or even that Egyptians call themselves Africans. I'm simply arguing technicalities, and that is my point.

  • @bedarder Well, technicalities aren't always considered when reading something like that.

  • @bedarder Someone from Europe would never call himself a European but you are right but its a continent whit 50 different countries so...

  • @BillWeekly that's absurd. the whole world, except you, americans included, refer to citizens of the US as Americans. nobody from mexico (part of the americas9 would call himself and american. what's yer point?

q: where are you from a i am an american. let it go.

  • Not owning. Comes and goes.

  • Neil Young is one of the few people that Bob Dylan paid offhand tribute to in a song: "Highlands," (Time Out of Mind)-- one of Bob's most underrated songs BTW.

  • music is the language of the soul and no one owns it! (i understand neil)

  • ; Neil Young's work, and singing is superiour to Bob Dylan. Figure it out yourselves, who would you rather listen to?

  • @noahstfuboi what? oh no. thanks neil and whatever whoever sent him here. so many of the most lovely songs of all time.. old man only love can break your heart heart of gold cinnamon girl southern man needle and the damage done ohio and on &on &on.guess i'm lucky i saw him once live at the Stanford Basketball arena in the 70's . flo and eddie opened ..steve stills sat in... nice show....i only have to play a couple of chords from "old man" to get my head straight . still works after 40 years.

  • @bellhour234 STFU you prick

  • Leonard Cohen.

  • @InnocenceExperience Neil Young.

  • @Brigglz the question was who else would you put up there with Neil Young and Bob Dylan.

  • well one things for certain, no-one can be compared to dylan, no one comes close to him, neil young or anyone you can think of... there are alot of great writers but dylan is the greatest ever, thats not an opinion but fact.

  • @spliffitup No, thats an opinion. Mine is completely opposite and i'm not dumb enough to call it fact.

  • @noahstfuboi songwriting at its best is done through stream of consciousness. every song I write isn't planned or thought about it just flows and happens..that's what he's saying

  • @noahstfuboi fuck you asshole ... wow im ashamed you dick face

  • Thoughtfulness. Wish more people gave a damn like Young and people like him.

  • 0:08 You can tell he appreciates being ranked with only Bob Bloody Dylan

  • time to listen to 'like a rollin stone' and ask yourself...

  • Hard for me to understand how anyone that TRULY appreciates musical talent could post comments trashing Neil or Bob. Two giant legends in their own right. And to suggest Neil's music never influenced any one musician is utter hogwash. He was only referred to as the "Godfather" of Grunge rock. But as Frank Zappa so aptly put it.." Most people wouldn't know good music if it jumped up & bit them in the a** . " Neil Young = cool, humble Canadian. His own man.

  • Old man lying by the side of the road With the lorries rolling by Blue moon sinking from the weight of the load and the buildings scrape the sky Cold wind blowing down the alley at dawn and the morning paper flies Dead man lying by the side of the road With the daylight in his eyes. Don't let it bring you down its only castles burning Find someone who's turning and you will come around. Pretty great lyrics to my ears!!!
  • Neil...the essence of Coolness.

  • That is the essence of songwriting, a gift and I'm glad that a great one defined it that way. You can'not own it: It comes and goes through you. amazing.

  • ok asshole I just listened to 4 peter mulvey songs...he can play a guitar and sing jus like 7000 other wanna bees......so what! he is not Neil Young nor Neil Diamond Nor Neil dickhouse fuk thyself

  • @noahstfuboi if i was him I wouldnt even let you see my famous face..after his input into american cool...fuk off

  • Peter Mulvey will shake your bones to the bottom of the earth...

Dylan and Young need to wake up........listen to Peter Mulvey...

    he will kick you butt....

  • @brycedanderson Just looked up a video and man is that guy a dime a dozen. HE sounds like a singer for a disney movie. No Soul.

  • @7mattduser Gotta agree.

  • @brycedanderson shake this bone, idiot.

  • Peter Mulvey is better than BOTH DYLAN & YOUNG!!!

they need to get in tune...

    sorry....but it is the truth...

  • @brycedanderson huge force

  • Canadians have some shitty taste in music... stupid Canadians.

  • I love Neil Young, but anyone saying he, or any artist, approaches Bob Dylan lyrically is ridiculous, and OBVIOUSLY needs to listen to some more Dylan.

  • @pettylove13 oh please shut up

  • @pettylove13 neil young did approach dylan lyrically on his rust never sleeps record. very strong stuff.

  • Neil has the gift of humble! I adore him for that!

  • No one touches the genius of Dylan.

  • @noahstfuboi you're clueless

  • @chinocash You're right, he IS clueless!

  • @chinocash You're right, he IS clueless (referring to noahstfuboi)!

  • @trezpazz Excuse me? Do you speak English?

  • Stupid questions get what they deserve. Well done Mr Young

  • When talking about songwriting we gotta include Lennon/McCartney, too.

  • Neil Young is a genius just like Bob Dylan.

  • What a bunch of cry babies. Neil Young's NOT insulting Bob. He loves Bob. Dylan inspired him to become a musician. Look up what Young's said about Bob. Nothing but respect & admiration there, folks.

  • what a great interview. what an amazing musician

  • What Neil is saying about not owning the music is true. He may of given the music it's sound and put it into words that please the ears but what he writing about is EXPERIENCES that are common and relevant to Humankind. Who can OWN that?

  • I would put Leonard Cohen in this class of genius. These guys could put into words and song what many felt and still feel! Living is timeless and what was relevant then may not be relevant now to the guy who wrote it, but someone out there hears what Dylan or Young or Cohen wrote maybe today and says "wow" and it becomes relevant again..and again..and again..

  • You certainly never lived through the 60s

  • @robinlorene First of all, I was responding to a ridiculous comment that was taking a side on why Dylan was better or some, B.S. ....that has since been REMOVED because of negative votes, so.... Also, YOU DON'T KNOW ME or my life. So, it's pretty ridiculous to assume whether I lived through a time period based on the comment: "That's the most ridiculous statement I've ever heard." Do yourself a favor and stop attacking people you DON'T know on YouTube comments - it's pathetic.

  • @noahstfuboi Fuck what he says -in an in-terview...yeah sure he's gettin' on (in age) -BUT just listen to his (2nd)album :Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere?.....(Not to mention several others :like Aft.the goldrush';Montezuma;Time Fades Away....Rust Never Sleeps;and -at least 4/5 more!!!!!!Who's the F'kin IDIOT Dude????!!!!!!!!Enjoy...creashonrebel@yahoo.com

  • The Genius from Nothern Ontario talking about the Genius from the Land of 10,000 lakes...)))

  • @TheAURIEMMA Are you serious? His new albums are still cutting edge. He may not be transforming the Beatles or causing a social revolution anymore but his music is still ahead of it's genre and his songwriting is as strong as ever. Maybe you just don't like his new style? In that case power to ya bud but the experts agree, Dylan has NEVER lost it.

  • @ssmith5342 TROLL, get off your ass and listen to some real music.

  • LEGEND

  • wow... what a humanitarian and musician, so well ahead of his time. a truly beautiful, introspective soul. Thank you Neil Young

  • @ssmith5342 that's the most ignorant statement I've ever heard.

  • @teddrum , It is obvious you either didn't live through the 60's and 70's, during Vietnam to grasp what Neil Young is saying about Bob Dylan's lyrics. I did, and I get completely the essence of his statements about being there, hearing the music, and knowing that the songs were sang for that moment...kind of a "had to be there" moment in time.

  • @ssmith5342 That must be true, I mean that's why Dylan had made and sold over 40 albums to tens of millions of people, been revered as a legend who has influenced and changed music by all his peers and later musicians, and studied at univiersities around the world.

    You must be right.

  • @THthefirst So, according to your logic, large fan base = quality music? You must be a huge huge fan of Justin Beiber then.

  • @ssmith5342 No, you've misunderstood. Dylan is great because he has critical acclaim from his peers (like in this post and in the legions of musicians who hail him as a major seminal influence - not hard to find these, just do a bit of research), he also has acclaim from lots of other people too. I don't care if you don't personally like him - I used to hate him until my 20s! - but to just dismiss someone like Dylan as being crappy is glib and shows a lack of understanding.

  • @ssmith5342 Then why the fuck are you watching this video you daft cunt!

  • @ssmith5342 saying that they write crappy music is ignorant first of all, they influenced all other acts that came after them. They changed music to a more socially conscious and personal level, something that is missing from most popular music these days. Second of all, don't ever call someone elses art work crappy, especialy when they put their heart and soul into making it unlike most pop music today where it is writen by a company. Even if you don't particulary like the music, open your mind

  • Neil Young to me is a better singer/songwriter than Dylan. He has more of a range of styles, has a better voice, has more complex and interesting music, and I even think his lyrics are equally as good.

  • @Incubus941 Even Young wouldn't suggest his lyrics are in the same league as Dylan's. Young is like Springsteen - a good writer and a more popluist voice. But he never wrote anything that changed how other songwriters thought about what music could do. Or beatiful words like

Pointed threats, they bluff with scorn

    Suicide remarks are torn

From the fool’s gold mouthpiece the hollow horn

Plays wasted words, proves to warn

That he not busy being born is busy dying

  • @Incubus941 And without overstating the point: Then take me disappearin' through the smoke rings of my mind Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves The haunted, frightened trees, out to the windy beach Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves Let me forget about today until tomorrow.
  • @Incubus941 Neil > Dylan? Dylan's style range is unmatched by anyone. Go listen to the 1997 Grammy Album of the Year and best rock vocal performance "Time out of Mind" and tell me that's just another rehash of Blowin in the Wind. He's had strong blues, folk, country, rock, jazz and even soul albums. As for his writing he was nominated for the Nobel Peace prize in literature 5 times and has won a Pulitzer. Allen Ginsberg called him the greatest poet in the last 60 years. Love Neil but...

  • Bob Dylan is a poet god.

  • Neil Young is amazzing.

  • I think it's called integrity - Dylan and Neil Young both have it. Lotsa "entertainers" don't because they aren't tuned into their own voice and spirit - it's pretty simple.

  • @b1gregjockca you're a faggot.

  • amazing intereview, cheers TheMakemFolkSinger

  • neil turned away from the question

  • The best.

  • Apart from 5 or 6 songs I could never get into Young, but for Dylan I have the majority of his albums, all from the 60's and 70's and scattered ones from the 80's to 00's and I must say

    Dylan>Young

Hell for songwriting I'll also go

    Lennon>Young

Neils a great songwriter, but I just don't really like his music.

  • Agree with you harybosco, so good to hear Neil Young speak. What a legend.

(Don't know how anyone can possibly put Joni Mitchell alongside Bob Dylan and Neil Young! Sure lots do, but she was never an original. Even her best (early) work was in a pretty safe, well established place)

  • charlie rose needs to shut up and let neil talk...it's so rare we get the pleasure

  • What an asshole thing to say.

  • Happy Birthday Bob - may you stay Forever Young!

  • Check out PHIL OCHS - one of the best voices and composers yet probably the most misunderstood and underrated singer songwriter of all time. He passed away but his music lives on. --- Check it out and pass it on....

  • What a great answer to that question.

  • he doesn't speak the way you'd expect

  • for some reason when neil asks "Who else would I put up there?" hes seems like such a regular guy that i come in contact so often and it makes me feel like im there interviewing him and thinking "Wow i cant believe Neil Young is asking me something!!!!!"

  • you would never have neil..it you never had dylan...neils special ..he aint dylan

  • Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty.

Three of the best American singer songwriters of ALL time.

  • @legodarknight101 Neil Young is CANADIAN, not American.

  • @DarkestChapter I know, i'll change it then.

Best three songwriters ever. Does that suit you?

  • @legodarknight101 Yes, thank you.

  • @DarkestChapter lol good call

  • Comment removed

  • @DarkestChapter Indeed. However, much more American than many Americans. Politicians at least....Wouldn't you agree?

  • @DarkestChapter He moved to the states after he became famous, like every famous person does that comes from that shithole of a country we call Canada.

  • Not so,

He wasn't "famous" when he was in Canada. His fame probably began in the Buffalo Springfield era which was after he had moved to the States

  • Neil Young's songs have meant a great deal to me.

  • Dan Akroyd could play him really well

  • Listen to Miles Away by Kaz Piech!

  • Comment removed

  • Neil Young's written some fine stuff, but he's no Bob Dylan. He should've corrected Charlie. Dylan is in a class by himself. Neil might be grouped w/ Elvis Costello, Joni Mitchell, Carole King and some others, but Dylan? I almost laughed at the grouping.

  • @bailinnumberguy

The problem i have with Bob Dylan - and he confessed - is that he was never a political song writer

  • Neil can't think of anyone better than Neil. Go Neil.

  • Just so I have it right: we can't say "Afro-American", can't say "black", can't say "colored" or "shit-skin"? What are we to call our swarthy darker brethren?!

  • @beowulven im guessing bronzed,

  • haha afro american, thats excellent

  • @ FentonQHardwickIV - "for a gelded Neanderthal with Asperger's, Young has done quite well for himself" - That's what I'm talkin bout! Ha ha LOL

  • Neil Young's reputation rests on his 60s and 70s work, prior to "American Stars 'N Bars", "Rust Never Sleeps" and the rest of the awful, mediocre work he put out since. Prior to his descent into mediocrity, he was a great musician and songwriter. He was also a poser with deliberately torn, carefully distressed jeans; a mumbling pothead who could barely put together a cogent sentence. This wouldn't matter except for his insistence on being a populist, left-wing mouthpiece. He's cringeworthy.

  • @FuckngBastard Your name says what you are.

  • wow people are so caught up on the perceived racist remark that they looked past what neil was talking about. You guys need to look past the surface and really hear what neil young is talking about.
