@mprimecoleman You need to do some fucking research before you trash drums. Yes, poplar is one of the shittiest types of wood that you can use for a drum shell, if you get the bad kind. There's a MASSIVE difference between entry level poplar shells and, well, this kind. Poplar wood was used in almost ALL vintage drum sets. In fact, any vintage ludwig kit that you see that isn't a stainless steel or a vistalite has a maple/poplar/maple shell construction.
@XxStrongDrums1996xX Hey, no need to drop f-bombs. So what is the difference between bad poplar shells and these? I thought poplar was poplar. I actually make stave snare drums and I've made a poplar snare. It just has a much more shallow sound than a maple or bubinga, which I've also made. I'm pretty sure maple-poplar-maple shells were made to curb maple use, which is more expensive. Please educate me. I really do want to know. thx.
@filmskate14 typically we only offer Classics up to 24" bass drums, but I am sure we could make you a 28 special. Just curious, why do you want a 28? That's a huge drum!
@gwilym94 we do not offer acrylic shells. Although you may see a few artists with them occasionally, John Good will do everything he can to keep plastic shells from being made. He feels that wood is the most musical material to craft an instrument with, and discourages anyone from playing plastic drums. Besides, a plastic shell is not really a DW Shell. It doesn't have any of the decades of R&D that make DW Drums sound the way they do. Also, they crack easily.
@gwilym94 we do. lately we've been experimenting with mahogany/maple shells. Actually , Jimmy Chamberlin just ordered a set of those. They are not "officially" out, but if you tell your dealer that's what you want, we'll make it happen for you.
I think it would be so cool if there were more sizes and more finishes. I like the sound of the classics so much beter than the collectors. But the collectors are more custom.
I don't know if you guys like Ash wooded drums, but have you guys tried it before?

Poplar for drum shells is absolute garbage. It's not used very often, so it just seems like it's going to be "exotic."
