Davie, I couldn't agree with you more. The Grey Duster is perhaps one of the most effective flies ever. I use them in different sizes with great effect. Personally I find the Grey Duster in sizes 16 and 14 to be best on the rivers and a size 12 is terrific arounf may Fly time on the Loughs.
I just started tying flies but I don't have a big enough budget to buy all the materials you are using. I was wondering if you'd be able to make a video on some materials that you thing are essential when starting with flytying, and maybe give some comment on different sort of dubbing or other materials. It would help me out a lot.
I would reckon the materials I used in the video I could buy for about £15 which would tye you a few flies..Could you give me an idea of the flies that you would like to tye and I could give you an idea of the best and cheapest way to buy them...ATB Davie
Tiemco, Hanak and Partridge are the barbless hooks I'm using at the moment and I use them mostly from size 12s down to 24s which will cover most of the patterns I need but you may want to use bigger...ATB Davie
Hey Davie, very nice flies. i was just wondering if the gray duster will float well in faster slightly rougher water. also if it floats upright or with the tail end of the fly sinking seeing as it has no tail.
If the run is really fast and rough water at times I'll put on a size bigger so that I can see it as well as the fish and as I come out of it then I'll reduce the size, but most times I can see it with no trouble..I have always found this dressing of the Grey Duster to fish well...Happy New Year...
The vise that I use is called a Law it was made here in the U.K by a gentleman called Lawrance Waldron but unfortunately he has stopped making them...I'll send you a link to it as it's still on the internet..
Davie, Love the videos as usual..if you run out of moles over there in Scotland..I have some in my yard waiting for you to trap. All I ask if that you show me how shave the dubbin off them!
David been a subscriber for a while now and have had much success with your patterns. Was thinking of making some videos myself what kind of video camera are you using. Best regards keith
Thanks for subscribing and I'm glad the patterns have done well for you..The camera that I use is a Sony PD170 which is a few years old now but with the new technology I'm sure there's cheaper and better out there...
Hi Davie, I really like the closer shots on this video, very clear and easy to see, and as always your great patience in demonstrating each step completely... thanks... I found the volume a bit low.
Great pattern Davie, but taking the difficulty out of quill wings is even more valuable! I have been tying since 1969 and it is the one thing I have always avoided because I always made a mess of them using two seperate feathers. Thanks for this and everything else you do. I have tied quite a few patterns you have done here on YouTube and just adapted the colours to local insects with very good results.
Absolutly love the flies davie I use very similar flies myself.
I have various different capes genetic, indian and chinese time and time again i find myself using the lower grade capes simply because they catch me more fish.
I'm just curious if you have similar experience in Aryshire
Thanks again for the videos best on the internet by far......
I feel personally with the style of flies that I have fished for years I could get by with using indian and chinese capes but the genetics have worked their way into a few great patterns especially parachute style flies and a few others but the flies I tyed above I just like the colour and the proportions I get when I use them...Glad you liked them...
I've tied a few of those to give a go in a week or so when I head fishing with my father in law. Can't wait to give them a try. Thanks for another great video.. Hope all is well... Sam, and the family...
Hi Dave, nice brace of flies, great tip on the wing I think I can actually do that or should I say try, great video as always, do you have to use mole fur or can you substitute something else I haven't got any mole yet, Regards Alan
