Sankofa is an Akan word that means, "We must go back and reclaim our past so we can move forward; so we understand why and how we came to be who we are today."
The Akan (Ghanaian vernacular) word, Sankofa means "one must return to the past in order to move forward."
Its got nothing to do with keeping a white man on top - u ignorant fuck ... if you are born in England, you are English ..... born in Wales, you are Welsh, born in Ireland, you are Irish ..... born in America, you are American ... born in Africa, you are African .... its quite simple, and a fact of life ...... !!!!!!! Stop claiming to be something you are not, just because u have a black skin ..... IT DOES NOT MAKE YOU AN AFRICAN !!!!!!
and FYI for you guys that is angry with the girl because we are african americans and not all african. thats what keeps the white man on top. we to busy hating each other instead of picking each other up... and when our people came over here they suffered for 300 years and fought each and every day for our freedom. Brave outstanding men and women who came for africa, how can you hate the future they created for us african americans?
We are all All Africans and Human, people etc...! see that's the division that's keeping us separated and not as one!..Just listen to us fighting each other with the "you are not black enough or you are not African enough"... "Unity" we need to find that again.
@m0renachula704 you are American ...... Not African ,,, unless you were born in Africa, as i was ... STOP insulting us African born people ..... You are NOT african , no matter how much u pretend, or wannabe..... you are American ... Full Stop !!!!! Suck it up, and move on !!!!! .........

@147cray I tried to be nice but motherfucker fuck you! I don't give a damn what you think you are or who you think you are, why don't you take your ass some where and find something better to do, I didn't come here and post any thing offensive yet you decided to start shit with me for what?? Between you and I you are the one that is ignorant and I am tired of this bullshit. You can call me all the names you want, but you still wont be shit. FUCK OFF.
@m0renachula704 LMFAO @ u again - as with all of you stupid little cunt christians - its all so so shallow, and doesn't take much for you to forget your so called christianity - u posted offensive by claiming to be African, when, stupid, you are very obviously american- you are the clearly the ignorant motherfucking cunt - and u know what, I am, and always will be, African,LOL, even though u try to claim that right, u ignorant fuck - y don't u fuck off and die - and go to hell .. boo hoo hoo

I hope I don't sound silly in saying that there was always something in this song that touched my soul before I even knew what it meant. That maybe bull to some but to me there was always a connection and understanding! I truly believe that it is a part of my blood...my bones...my being! If if it is not truly biological it is sill a part of me for whatever GOD wants it to be!!!!
@pancha0826 In real music no matter the language u can always feel it and understand it on some level even if you don't speak the language. I don't understand the languages of most of the music I listen to but "I get it".

Sarafina was the first movie I watched. I have watched it more than 100 times. Love it. it was beautifully performed, South Africa did suffer during apartheid. you are strong S.Africa. I love you
Its true Africa is motherland...the home for black race, all blacks in USA, Caribeans, Branzil, Australia wherewe got dispersed by those who thought they were superior race....it brings tears to know blacks have the same root in motherland despite what happened years back....someone will be hold accountable for this inhuman actions!
@TheKoonig " someone will be hold accountable for this inhuman actions!"
Unfortunately not. The descendants of those who survived the sufferation do not care what happened not so long ago & won't push for retribution from those they put full dependence on!
If you haven't seen the movie, do so!! Very thought-provoking!! Also, it will make you laugh, cry, dance -- as well as righteously angry! This was SA, prior to the 1994 election that saw Nelson Mandela inducted as President! How far SA has come, in 16+ years!! May the go from strength, to strength!!
@zuhri02 Its the roots of life! You know they say life started from africa....Why do you think it has such a powerful influence in the world today! I DONT WHAT ANYBODY SAY! America Got ALL OF ITS IDEA'S AND INFLUENCE FROM AFRICA! They honestly robbed us of it! Nothing against whites Im just saying its amazing how Racist people say they hate Negreos, Africans and African Americans when 80% of the things they do everyday was created and made out of the inspiration of Our Great African Culture!
@drunky1022 ...well said bruh, that's wassup! black man got talent since time in memorial! have learned most whites who brough slaves in US learnt alot for those slaves since the slaves did everything while the white man sit and watch as master...no wonder they had to go to Africa motherland to get talented man in universe.....asia or latin america or europe was close enough to get laborers there!!
je ne comprends pas mais j'adore cette chanson ils revendiquent leurs droit ils meurent ils se battent très fort pour faire respecter leurs personnalités vivre les noirs vivre l'afrique ..

The sound track to this movie is outstanding. It was even better on stage (if that is possible.) The stage presentation of this movie was more moving even though I had trouble understanding what some of the words were. The feeling conveyed a language beyond mere words. POWERFUL!!!!!!!
i love this song. i fill like crying. its goog to know where you come from and know where you are going to, i really appriciate the writer of this movie, may Almighty God give you more wisdom to do more. AMEN...........
Thank God for making us free, this country is blessed with all your greatest.Today we cry because joy and 15 years we used to cry of sadness.May glory be seen by every African.
One day, we will sit and say to ourselves that we've traveled a long journey....Africa's problems will one day be solved and it will be one country: United States of Africa...
We love you mama africa...you are always in our dreams and we shall forever remember who you are and what you've given us...We love you!!!
That place is where the world heard our first cry and it's where we took our first breath... we always love you!!!!!!
THE CRIED OF OUR ANCESTORS WILL BE HEAR, AND VERY VERY SOON THEY WILL BE. THEIR TEARS WILL NOT GO IN VAIN...THE DUST OF THE SAHARAH AND THE GOLD OF EGYPT, THE VEST ARMY OF NUBIA AND THE GREAT PLAIN OF THE FOREST WILL MOVE THE TEARS OF OUR ANCESTORS IN A FLOOD, A TORNADO ACROSS ALL OF THOSE WHO SEEK TO DESTROY THEIR ROOTS AND NOT GIVE THE APPRECIATION IT DESERVE. I AM A BORN BREED OF AFRICA PROUD TO BE AND WILL ALWAYS BE IN POOR CONDITION OR RICH CONDITION.
@dinachi85 i only said that because the movie didnt take place in west africa....DONT GET ME WRONG I LOVE WHERE I AM FROM & WILL NEVER FORGET.....THERE IS NOTHING SAD ABOUT AFRICAN ITS JUST THE WAY THE MEDIA PORTRAYS IT
Still a good movie today. The choreography here is tru African and the lyrics just makes me emotional. South Africa is a place to be, after such struggle and now we are hosting the World Cup? Wow!
I watched this movie more than 10 years ago... I don't remember the storyline... but I do remember that it is a very good movie... Must find it and watch it again.
This is proper singing !! very little use of technology , just listen to these voices.. I have chills from the start till the end .. It is raw ,deliberating and inspiring in every way !! THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC !! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU !!
this is so touchy, tho can understand the zulu part o' it..its like i was actually the victim o' the oppressors! ma africanas lets ol' unite 4 one cause,to the youth lets rise up and preserve solidarity in our motherland we the future ayt...
Definitely brings back the days when I was an ardent supporter of the struggle against apartheid from my own small corner of Africa in Accra, Ghana. I still stand up against oppression.
Thank you for the translation....it adds and extra dimension to the song. It was already a lamentable one and now knowing what they are saying makes it more poignant.
I love the song and for those who do not know the meaning of it try to find contextual meaning before giving your dumb opinions. I do not speak either of the languages used but it is enough to know why they sang it, it is so moving.
Thanks for the translation, I've been searching for ages. I love this song & it's nice to finally know lyrical meaning even though the song it's self is moving enough.
This has always been one of my favorite soundtracks. I'm a musician and I don't know if I have ever heard such passionate singing as there is in Sarafina. When the women come in at 1:53 it pierces the soul. Thank you for posting the translation.

Still a good movie today. The choreography here is tru African and the lyrics just makes me emotional. South Africa is a place to be, after such struggle and now we are hosting the World Cup? Wow!

the movie has a bit off the lyrics, song is a cry off the people, because people are dying, fighting, tortured,....

Definitely brings back the days when I was an ardent supporter of the struggle against apartheid from my own small corner of Africa in Accra, Ghana. I still stand up against oppression.

I love the song and for those who do not know the meaning of it try to find contextual meaning before giving your dumb opinions. I do not speak either of the languages used but it is enough to know why they sang it, it is so moving.

This has always been one of my favorite soundtracks. I'm a musician and I don't know if I have ever heard such passionate singing as there is in Sarafina. When the women come in at 1:53 it pierces the soul. Thank you for posting the translation.
