I've never heard the Ping Pong ball comparison , it makes alot of sense, it puts it in much better perspective, thanks for posting this video. This helped me out alot!!
sorry about my spelling i just wanted to tell the profesor that the pinky is out and it needs some fix ... the finger technique helps relax those muscles in your hand and fingers.. believe me it helps developing your performance... remember drums is a very physical instrument and relaxation is the key for success when playing it..
I am glad to see such a great dialogue happening here and I appreciate all of the comments. The technique that I am covering is the called the multiple bounce, buzz, or closed roll. I think of the multiple bounce roll like sandpaper, from extra fine to coarse. The softer I play the more fine the buzz will be and the slower my strokes... as I play louder, I open up the bounces (triple bounce) and use a faster roll speed.
lol, this is a buzz roll. Don't mean to troll, but it is the simplest and easiest rudiment you could learn. It is not the most complex aspect of snare drumming, complex would be Book Reports or Diddle egg fives.
the girl's hands where to tense.. and she was holding the sticks in her second finger joint .. something she should't do cuse it creates tension in ur hands.. try moving the stick to ur first index finger joint and it should create a space between ur index and thumb.. the space should be big enough to fit a stick inside.. this will feel very weird but u will notice better performance and more bounciness on ur roll.. to the professor.. try some finger technique to fix that pinky cuse it's 2 tense
@023pepo firstly, if you want people to listen to you, try spelling out words, and using the right version of a word (too instead of to). It doesn't change what you're saying, it just makes it more credible. And her hands really didn't look that tense. Tension is not the cause of all problems. Plus, what you are saying is a bit confusing. It may be a legit criticism but it could be reworded. Also, what do you mean, try some finger technique to fix the pinky?
@023pepo and what do you mean the pinky is too tense? That is not necessarily the cause for it to be sticking out. And either way, we are talking an orchestral snare drum roll here, not a triplet roll on a drumline. The pinky being out is really not a big deal.
@kcuret6542 I'm sure he knows that. The pinky being out, at least in an orchestral snare drum situation, is really not a big deal. It is all about sound here.
I am a drummer and I was wondering how to use single hits in a row like a solo kinda but using them after another but a nasty habit is that one hand gets to much faster than the other and it starts to go into flams . Any tips to help me get consecutive hits when im playing?
squeeze the stick dont push down, al need to try that!!! we were supposed to do a snare drum solo piece for our higher music class in school but it got dropped so a never learned this wen a was in skol cheers man!
Are they trying to get a buzz roll or a double stroke? If they are trying to achieve a double stroke this is horrible. It shouldn't overlap itself. You should be able to hear each distinct note. It was so dirty i couldn't tell, and if it was a buzz roll that's not right either.
Hey Everyone, Thanks for your comments! This was just a quick video that I did to help some of my students learn to play a smooth drum roll... and no I am not in jail!
I have been trying so many ways to get this. Finally, I got what I was looking for. You are the best drum teacher ever I found. What you are doing it makes sense dollar and cent. Thnks a lot for ur help. Thanks thanks thanks. You helpe me a lot.
great video. the others tell you how to do it really slow and then just go really fast, this actually worked!!! hahahaha, she looks like she's having fun. lol
Wouldn't this be a multiple bounce roll?

A proper drum roll isn't digging the sticks into the head of the snare, it's double strokes.
