  • is that an Avalon VT-737 i see back there on the rack? You have any Vposts about micing heavy guitars?

  • @clintusmaximus - they are Avalon 2022 pres.

  • reminds me of Flea from RHCP

  • cheers man this was pretty usefull, wat kind of amp setting do you use while doing this kinda stuff?

  • @juswannawatchthings - loud volume so you can get lots of punch, bit on the cleaner side.

  • @DAVEWEINER cheers, will give it a try

  • I like the slap tone you're getting. I hardly ever hear good slapping on guitar.

  • I don't think much guitarists own a seven-string or eight-string guitar. xD

  • that's definitely not true.

  • @Mathidal actually, ALOT of them do. I prefer them with the wider range of notes and especialy that low sound.

  • Your lesson was complete and simple. Thanks Dave!

  • hahah 3/26 is my BDAY

  • my man emeral, haha!

  • what song is that at the beggining?

  • info at the end of the vid.

  • ROFL Nice use of the LiveType defaults at the beginning. First time I've seen an instruction video on YT with some small sign of post-production...

Sounds cool on a guitar, but I find that the strings are a bit too close together to get a crisp sound. That and the next highest string will murder your cuticles... Of course I'm a bass purist playing with a guitar so what did I expect lol...

I didn't expect for the top of my finger to bleed all over the strings...

  • Excellent work. I've been looking for a good explanation on the slap/pop technique. Is there a particular spot to slap the thumb? I notice you're a little higher than midpoint between the bridge and neck pickup. Also are you using both pickups when slapping?

  • Thanks man! Now,what if I want to do a series of notes or something else than an octave.I`m trying to slap-hammer on-pop-slap-pull off but it sounds sloppy...Any tips-if you actually understood what I just said!!!!

  • Can I use this technique on a 6 string guitar too? Tuned in standard E?

  • Only on Tuesdays.

  • LOL

  • nice ... i use it myself but i never got it good enough for using in a song or wherever...

just to get people laughing and looking for a bass player :D

  • this is hard

  • Good Stuff!

  • Dave.... is this what john mayer does alot on acoustic

  • Emeril, upon watching this, would surely say, "Slap, Pop, and BAM!!!" ^^|m/ That aside... lol

This is a very useful technique Dave. Tricky, but worth every hour of practice time. It could totally add some cool flavours to your compositions. I myself must get busy and work on this for my future songs!

Cheers for covering this, dude! Keep on rockin'!! :-)

  • dave, youre the man

  • Nice one Dave. It's harder than it looks too. Keep me busy for a while. Have you tried doing it with a mix of muting and un muting and adding loads of chorus to the sound? Trust me it sounds cooool. Hope to see ya in the UK again soon. I think it's time for a solo tour matey!!!!!

  • Hey Dave, what program do you use to record and edit your videos on your mac?

  • Final Cut Pro

  • funny, i thought it was a bass technique...

  • This is a whole lot better than the last 'guitar slapping/popping' lesson I looked at. It's a fun thing to throw into a song, surprising to suddenly hear slapping and popping coming from a guitar.

  • that string skiping this you did on fpe tv. You should totally do that.

  • Great as Always!! I love this one very original!

    See ya!

  • Thank you Dave, you are a true musician.

  • I'll give you five starz, even though I tend to leave the slapping and popping to the bass players.. I got a live blues jam posted here, so stop in and have a listen. I don't bite! Thanx for sharing your chops with everyone! ApB @ " Sick Licks "

  • I was going to go to your clinic tonight in Cherry Hill, but I missed it. I was at the Sam Ash in Franklin Mills, PA last week and I picked up a paper that said you were having a clinic on Wednesday the 26. I didn't look at the paper carefully enough and I thought the clinic was going to be in Franklin Mills. I walked into Sam Ash with my dad, and there were only a couple people in there. I thought it was pretty cool, because I might have a better chance to win the RG350EX.

  • Is there anything he can't do?!! Hello Chuck Norris!!!

  • Woa I wanna do this, I will practice this!!! Thankkyou Dave!!!

  • Very Challenging Technique.

  • This trick is pretty awesome dave! I have a question for future ROTW, i have serious problems with my improvisation, i feel that i'm not so creative, and you always are very creative when you improvise, how do you do that? is something natural born? or it can be worked? Thanks!

  • It just needs work. I suggest scheduling some lessons with me, we can work on it and get you improving in no time.

  • But how can we make that? Will you make a ROTW? Take care dave! you are an excelent person and teacher!

  • No, it's live internet guitar lessons. Details are here:

    daveweiner com / lessons

  • Ok dave, i'll schedule some later! Awesome idea dave! Take Care!

  • Nice video. Loved it. Snap & pop is always a nice alternative to picking everything out. Gives it more of a funk sound. Nice take on it Dave. Have fun at your clinics! See you next week.

    Kelly

  • Very nice Dave! But after a while my thumb hurts, Am i doing something wrong?

  • it will go away, your thumb just has to get a li'll bit harder on the part of the skin that get's beaten ;) take a breka every now and then to allow it to heal and within a few days you wont feel it at all.

    cheers

  • Sweet incorporation & vid Dave

  • Nice!

  • awesome video

  • Fun lesson, but I was really looking forward to Lydian mode. Looking forward to next week, Dave!

  • As usual, great stuff Dave. Just a quick setup question. What gauge are you using string wise? Looks like you've got a .60 for you B. I know some guys use standard sets, then dump a tree trunk for the B (like a .68 or .72). I find a .56 (gauging up my usual D'Addario XL125) works fine.

    Keep rocking!

  • I use EB 10-56.

  • Cool!
