The worst part it, it would not involve giving our wealth away. In the short-run we would lose some small amount of industry from dropping trade barriers, in the long run we would be becoming more productive and enhancing the all-around wealth of both ourselves and other countries.

The problem is one of comparative advantage, most African countries have advantages in the same areas and so trade between them is not really useful.

The same can be said for much of South America.

The problem is that industrialised countries are the ones it would be comparatively advantageous to trade with. And we' ve been shooting them down for a century ever since they said they didn't fancy being colonies anymore.

@urruler It would be advantageous only if a fair price was received for raw materials produced by us (Africans) or if African "finished" products weren't subject to high tariffs in western territories (e.g. chocolate). The benefit of trade between African countries is the redcuction in the cost of importing (examples being importing in $ beef from S America or rice from Asia) which is more expensive and counterproductive than importing the same type of product within Africa.
