It's funny; I've seen them about 50 times. They've dones this maybe five times. Robin really has to work to hit these notes and he's said it's VERY hard for him to sing. I suspect that's why it's only selectively in the setlist. Possibly the best "power ballad" of the 80s.
One more thing since you brought up "Gonna Raise Hell," according to the July/August 1994 issue of Bass Player magazine Tom Petersson revealed that he played an Alembic 8-string bass on the studio version of "Gonna Raise Hell."
I swear that stage and the acoustics sound & look just like the Tabernacle in Atlanta. Its an old church converted to a venue. Cheap Trick would be IDEAL to see there ,since it is the BEST venue in Atl. to see a show.
Hopefully Tom can learn the actual bass line to this song and not just play the root notes and plod along like a beginner. He's a much better bass player than this.
Hey man listen to the record. Jon Brant who played on the album version was clearly playing a four string bass. Also, he played a beautiful melodic bassline that complemented the song perfectly and he was not playing for his personal amusement. Sometimes a bassline means more than just following the changes. You can play melodic and serve the song I have been a bass player for many years so I think I know what I am talkin about. Also, Tom is playing a four string bass in this performance.
as a bassist my self, and a cheap trick fan, im aware that jon used a four string but it was meant for a 12-string. the song borderline uses a four string but when tom plays it he uses a 12-string, plus the song isn't that big a bass song unlike gonna raise hell.
Well, Tom Petersson rarely used a twelve string bass in the studio. Jon Brant never used one in the studio and hated playing the instrument live. Tom mainly used it live so the band would not have to use another full time guitarist and Robin could concentrate on vocals/occasional rhythm guitar. There are only one or two songs on Cheap Trick albums where there is actually a 12 string bass.
So? This is a band known for their live music, and a musician known for playing 8 string, 10 string and being the first to play a 12 string, in fact in one interview Nielsen said Petersson invented it - thought he was kidding...check out him playing Within You Without You, captures the sound of the sitar
I always liked this song, but live it was HUGE! Of course the vid doesn't do it justice, you have to be there, but this is a great addition to the set list.
to essar1: it really does need to be back on the set list!! But, it looks like a really difficult song to sing for robin. That's probably why they only play it on certain occasions.
i've got the "MUSIC FOR HANGOVERS" dvd, and it actually has a commentary track with the guys, and Tom is talking about how he just picked up that gibson bass
A comment on dancinggypsee's comment, I've heard many recordings of live Cheap Trick, where Tom was playing a song that was recorded when Brant was in the band.
Saw them perform it live in 1987. Houston, Texas at a small club (exess) Tom actully came to the front door and waved to all his loyal fans. Side note. The Elvis Brothers were the opening act.
Im just glad Tom agreed to do this live. I asked Robin a many years back why they never played it live. He said Tom didnt want to learn it because he wasnt in the band when it was recorded. What a great song.

I'm not used to seeing Tom not playing a 12ver. That's what made Cheap Trick sound huge, especially in their live shows.
