Wow...gotta give Durante credit, boy....almost at the exact moment he saw Miranda was have a problem he pulled up and without even missing a beat improvised a segueway right into something else with the audience being none the wiser. That's the vaudeville training coming into play.

Wow. People of my generation only knew Jimmy Durante as an old comedian from a long time past (I was born in 1960). But his rapid fire response to something obviously and tragically totally unscripted (he knew something was seriously wrong before Carmen Miranda hit the floor, and managed to pull a one-liner reference to a line from the Xavier Cugat song 'South America, Take It Away' out of his hat to boot) offers a split second look at his comedic genius.

An L.A. Times obit said Miranda had an exhausting last few hours. She and Durante did a performance for the cast after doing the TV show. The company had worked late because of an impending TV-actor strike. Miranda then took some of the cast and friends home for a small party, where she performed. She went to bed at 3 a.m., went to a bathroom, and then came down a hallway and collapsed. Her body was not found until 10:30 a.m. Her husband, who slept in a separate bedroom, said she had been tired.

Before this episode she had fallen on stage several times in Vegas. She was terribly ill and nobody did a thing to save her. Very sad!

That's not true, she was not terribly ill, she was hooked up on barbiturates and amphetamines, on this presentation she had a mild heart attack and she didn't even noticed, she thought she was just "out of breath" and kept on going with the show, that night she had a full heart attack and died. She had no clue her heart was that weakened.

Con tacones Carmen sería mucho más alta que Jimmy Durante, y tenía que bailar con él. Además, se sentía más cómoda bailando descalza.

Entiendo lo de no parecer más alta que Durante, pero......desconacia esa prefencia de Carmen por bailar descalza, en España siempre la conocimos con sus enormes plataformas......pero....agrad­ezco la información, pues todavia estoy en edad de aprender......Un saludo.
