The last time fireworks were on the Eiffel Tower was in 2009 to celebrate 120 years since it was built. Fireworks are no longer allowed on the Tower because of safety concerns. It's covered with shimmering lights now which shimmer for 5 minutes on the hour in the evenings and for longer on special occasions such as Bastille Day and New Year.

Shame really.

@bandbdofj - yes. I think it's near the Louvre and is part of a fairground. Paris seems to have copied London by building a big wheel. I hope it wasn't because of jealousy because compared to the Eiffel Tower the London Eye is ugly.

We were on one of the bridges over the river between the Eiffel Tower and Champs Élysées and saw no fireworks like seen in this video. Why upload and pretend it to be 2011/2012? Sad. Anyway, we had a fantastic time in Paris for New Year, great atmosphere..

This video appears to be Paris's Olympic bid in 2005 and is, therefore, fake.

I was in the Tour Eiffel and there was no fireworks, and this video looks fake because it was uploaded 2 days ago...

But one think I am very sure, I will never spend new year in paris again, there is nothing in the Tour (no fireworks, no countdown), lot of people just searching for fight.

@FriedRiceINC - this video's from 2007 for their Olympic bid, hence the 2012 logo in the wheel they've copied from London. When they have an icon like the Eiffel Tower why build a wheel anyway?

Maybe if they'd utilised the Tower they'd have won the Olympic bid.

maybe this fireworks wasn't as big as in other country but this year, french government tried to do his best to avoid troubles. in fact this fireworks was secret until midnight to avoid gathering group. some people forget that Paris is the first city in the world in terms of visitors so they have quite a "responsibility"

@ilias2oo6 - Jealous? London only started to have fireworks for New Year in 2000. Before that we had NOTHING to celebrate New Year. All that happened was hundreds of people gathered in Trafalgar Square (usually drunk) and trouble broke out. The idea was that the clock of Big Ben could be seen, however, the chimes couldn't be heard because of the noise from the crowd.

Now at last we have fireworks giving us publicity around the world on New Year's Day, like other major cities.
