  • I have a Basenji-Pug mix, she's a year old :) She's a little turd, but we love her.. she's orange except for a little light orange on her tummy and butt, and her muzzle fades into black. She's built exactly like a basenji. Her skin is a little bit loose around her, due to the wrinkly nature of pugs. Her tail is kind of a mystery, it's mostly straight except for a slight curl at the end. I think her mouth is more like a pug's would be if it had a long muzzle. I don't know why I put this.. hmm.

  • I wish animals could live as long as us Ive lost a cat of old age and a kitten because of a snake also a dog we had for a day we found him and unticked him also Ill loose my grandmother soon stroke :( Bro 2

  • I am so sorry for your loss. It has been a year since Ruby died, and I still miss her terribly. All we can do is be glad for the time they were with us, and that they are not suffering now.

  • @Neverbark1 that bell thing you taught her is genius =p and im sorry to hear that your Ruby died =[ she looked like one hell of a dog.

  • My Basenji just pass away this last Monday... just can't stop watching this since I found this video, I congratulate to you, I haven't the opportunity to training her because I got her when she was 6 months and she was really rebel, Oh...how I miss Her!!!

  • I am very sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, you are not alone. I know of many needless deaths from untreated Fanconi; many vets are totally unaware of it.

Every basenji owner should strip test his basenji at least once every month for his entire life with Bayer Diastix or Clinistix for Glucose. A positive result and further testing that indicates Fanconi is not a death sentence; Fanconi can be managed with Dr. Steve Gonto's Fanconi protocol.

  • Any potential basenji owner MUST learn to deal with the breed first. My best friend in the world died because my vet and I were not educated on fanconi syndrome.

His disease made him extremely temperamental and he bit people to the point we almost had to put him down 2x. The vet said he had a hypoactive thyroid and put him on pointless meds, which made him sicker.

Besides that, they have a personality that left unfulfilled, can make them seem aggressive when all they want to do is learn.

  • I know LOTS of people who live in a city with their basenji(s)! The dog has the same requirements no matter where he lives: good food, regular dental attention, lots of fresh air and exercise, and plenty of love. :)

  • I am considering having a Basenji, I fell in love with them.. I do have one question though; Are they really suitable for city-living? I live in Amsterdam, near a park, and I have enough time on my hands to have long walks and work with them of course, but would they thrive in a city?

  • LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • it tries to bark anyway. lol

  • Amazing dog!!!!

  • Don't be sad. Ruby LOVED doing tricks. She was very smart and always happy to be engaged. She learned to differentiate between certain toys, enjoyed figuring out how to get whatever she wanted, and no force was ever used. She was independent - when she wanted to be. :)

  • Don't understand people that get basenjis to teach them tricks, the breed is well known to be independant and not WANTING to learn tricks and that they are more like cats. Seeing this clip almost makes me feel sad, like seeing a caged eagle.

  • @loijsan Sad??That dog looks well taken care of by a great owner who took alot of time to train Ruby.I also have a well trained Basenji and she is treated better then most peoples children.Basenji's are extremely smart animals mine was easy to train actually-she pretty much trained herself. We take her everywhere, local stores let her inside shes amazing.Save your sadness for some of these dogs that have no home and no one to love.Independant doesnt mean you shouldnt train it-just the opposite!

  • @loijsan you absolutely don't have any knowledge of the Basenji do you?

My uncle has had 4 of them, and they LOVE to learn, they just have trouble concentrating, because they are very cat-like.

But you can teach them anything, you just have to be patient with them, and believe me, they DO want to learn tricks. And they are extremely smart, their intellegence is underestimated because they have problems staying focused. But that doesn't mean they're dumb and don't want to learn.

  • so cute

  • are basenjis playful? i want a dog but i want it to be energetic and playful, if a basenji isnt good for this what medium sized dog should i get

  • @iwilleatyourburgers American Cocker Spaniel, trust me.

  • For every breed, there is a rescue group, usually local to help those dogs, often young adults, that need new homes due to no fault of their own. Before you buy from a breeder consider starting here: basenjirescue or try petfinder

  • That is so cute :) Missy knows how to sit, down, crawl, roll over, shake, high five, poor doog (pretends her paw is broken), and once its all done, she will bow! hehe!

They are alot of fun, this breed! I love them and id never be able to live without one being right by my side, or under the covers hahaha :) thanks for sharing she is a smarty pants. Oh and FYI, Missy cheats sometimes too ;P haha

  • our basenji just likes to eat the furniture legs. :P

  • Great job training! It seems like you guys have a strong bong, especially for a Basenji.

  • SHES VERY BEAUTFUL

  • What a cute little basenji. Mine just sits on the couch all day and moans at my other dog ahah.

  • @Neverbark1

ur so good!! how did u learn this??

    i might be getting a basenji :)

r they working out for u??

  • Awesome dog :D !!!!!!!

he must be really smart :) i love basenji but i have 5 cats from the street :p ...but my dream is to have a dog ...actually a "Parson jack russel terrier" or a "beagle-harrier" :)

  • lol "you're a cheater!" cute

  • they are amazing, my basenji learned every trick in the book by the time he was 7 months old! Smart fellows!

  • beautiful dog

  • hahaha! my dog also skips crawling and just does a sort of hunched walk to the treat! clever, aren't they?

  • I like your house

  • no offense, but you seem a little harsh on the little pup. Do you think the sweet dog knows when you call him/her a cheater?

  • Basenji are geniuses. So cute. And I love your description! :D She taught you to make a movie of the tricks...haha

  • The misconception that Basenjis are not smart is untrue. The fact is , they dont feel as though they have to do tricks. They are a wild hunting dog from Africa. They are 6000 to 7000 years old. To survive in the African jungle, you have to be pretty darn smart. Put the "smartest" dog you can find in the jungle and I he wouldnt last a day !!!

The Basenji can hunt with out his human, and he has to figure out how to get himself out of those situations.

  • Do you breed basenjis? I was amazed by her body lines and frown. I'm a Rough Collie breeder in Brazil and was looking for a basenji female pup. She's beautiful. Rgds

  • hehehe. thats cute! Very smart girl :) I tried for the longest time teaching Missy, my basenji to talk. but she never learned it. lol. how did you do it? Missy does sit, down, crawl, roll over, shake, high five, poor dog, and she bows at the end. lol they are very unique amazing dogs! I love Basnejis!

  • hahah this species of dog is so beyond tricks

  • wow very smart dog! Is it hard to train her? I am considering getting a Besenji puppy

  • wow you must worked a lot with him... i was just reading about them in wikipedia and they are in 79 place in the Lowest Degree of Working/Obedience Intelligence

Understanding of New Commands: 80 to 100 repetitions or more.

Obey First Command: 25% of the time or worse. but that Dr. Coren resarch is questinable. Any way its beautiful dog. :)

  • @AlexandrosKaisaros They are cats in dogs bodies... they do what suits them. If you have a cookie- they will do every trick in the book to get it. If you call them because you are leaving and need to put them in the crate- you will probably be ignored. They will lay down in a patch of sunshine and refuse to move until they have adequately tanned... I love mine. He is rotten to the core and completely wonderful.

  • @MyrtleBeachWebAngel hehe i like cats so if they are like cats then am ok with them ;)

  • SOOO adorable! I have a basenji Cross and his mannerism's are much

the same. He also does alot of tricks like this! :D hehe

  • She's beautiful!!!!! Congrats!!

I'm getting my basenji show girl soon. Hope she looks similar to yours and just as obedient :)

  • Very nice and adorable too! I bet that took a long time to get him to that stage. Them dogs are soo cute. I am thinking about getting a Basenji, but it will have to be shipped to me =( and i dont like to do that. Where did you get yours?

  • Please DO NOT get your basenji from a website unless the seller screens you to make sure that YOU are suited to the breed. Responsible breeders want their dogs to go to homes that will keep them safe. Look for a breeder referral on the Basenji Club of America website, or look at the Basenji Rescue and Transport website for a rescue.

  • wow. that's amazing!! I wish I could train my dog to do that!!

  • que lindo!!! cute!

  • yeah stuff what people say about Basenji's being dumb. Thats like saying Black people are Dumber than whte people because we look different.

  • @LatterDayProphet no thats mexicans...... (note that i am JK)

  • And who said Basenjis aren't smart,

to skip crawling and walk to the cookie

    is not cheating but smart.

  • @3fuzes basenji's are some of the smartest dogs I heard

  • how did you train your dog to do that???

  • Comment removed

  • Wow, that is such an amazing job! Especially for a basenji!! Keep up the awesome work with her! ;D

  • my dog won't even sit when I ask him to lol

  • How did you teach it to Spit that one is awesome.

  • my dog can thetch balls and retrieve them without being told anything, he can sit by me just pointing down, he shakes my hand when I hold my palm up at his chest level, and he jumps when I put my palm up at my stomach level

  • Good job - crawling is always hard for a basenji especially when the floor is not a carpet :)

Gave me inspiration to show Calistas tricks in a video soon - thank you!

  • my dog can easily crawl and he can climb a 5 ft. fence in 6 seconds and on the corner of two fences he can balance his whole body there even though I don't promote any of this

  • Thats exactly what my dog used to do when i asked her to sit. She'd have to have something to say about it. My dog was Afracis Basenji. They are a friggin amazing breed they also behave somewhat catlike.

  • WOW! I commend you on your little girl and your training abilities! Anyone with a basenji knows how difficult it is. I've owned two...and they DEFINITELY didn't care if I wanted them to learn anything! :) They are the most precious dogs for those willing to be patient with them. Great job with yours!! :)

  • omg how did you get her to do the ring the bell thing? Thats amazing!

  • Best dog!

  • cool basenji!!!!

  • Can enyones else basenji open the door? :o

    My basenji can. :D

  • mine too!

  • it dont like crawl much a its so cute =)

  • lol wow that was incredible my lil girl can only sit and shake, but really is a poorly(my fault) trained basenji that is like 5 years old you can expect some fun with them. she is sooooo smart

  • wooow!!! i have a basenji too. Can you help me with tips please!!? xD haha (sorry for my english)

  • Bravo Ruby, that is very good trick that she does, I have two basenji too they are smart doys, except they are too attach to me. thank you for share

  • Woohoo, I was cheering and clapping for Ruby :P I have two Basenjis of my own and I know what little monsters they can be so anytime I see one doing a trick, it makes me smile! Well done!

  • i just got a basenji at a shelter she is adoreable she is 1 year old , and i want to know how to train her

  • Use only positive methods. Google "click train" and you'll find lots of information to help you.

  • Very cute dog :)

And BTW my dog also cheats on "crawl"

  • hahaha! I loved how eager he was to ring.

  • Loved it!

  • Thank you!

She also does 'high four', shake, dance, and sing. I started working with her on discriminating among her toys, but didn't persist so she has probably forgotten. And yes, I taught her all by myself using treats and praise for rewards. i don't know if basenjis are necessarily more difficult to train than other breeds, but they get bored easily so you have to work smarter. ;)

  • Ours does sit, down, shake, 'high eight,' and she can beg, but she mainly just does it when she wants to go outside. She was house-trained at 5 weeks, though -- they are very smart, they just have a mind of their own. She refuses to do anything if you don't have a piece of food in your hand to give to her, though.

  • very nice!! all that by your self? are basenji easy to train??

  • very nice.!! all that by your self? or have you been in dog training ? is basenji;s easy to train?

  • what a beautiful dog!
