well she dies in the book, but if you ask why does she die at all, the answer to that is Katherine Patterson (author) based her book loosely off of I believe her son who's friend Lisa died when she was struck by lightning when they were both about 10 yrs old. Btw i highly recommend the book Patterson is a great writer. i loved this movie and believe it or not the book is even better.
