And yes, the timing does matter. If you're going to make a call like that at that point in a match, you better be damn sure of yourself.
Having said that, Serena most likely would have lost, anyway; she was being totally outplayed - and her performance at this year's Open shows it was no fluke, either.

We all make mistakes but the problem I have with Williams is that I didn't hear an apology. She was more concerned about making a politically correct statement than being honest and truthful. I completely understand that it is not easy to admit to what she did, especially in front of the media, but she would have had my respect and the respect of many other people if she had stopped acting for a moment and had given some sign of honesty.

...it isn't a fault until the foot touches the court; in this case that didn't until after the ball left her racquet. Probably the worst call I've ever seen in 30 years of watching tennis. And yes, the timing does matter. If you're going to make a call like that at that point in a match, you better be damn sure of yourself.
Having said that, Serena most likely would have lost, anyway; she was being totally outplayed - and her performance at this year's Open shows it was no fluke, either.

We all make mistakes but the problem I have with Williams is that I didn't hear an apology. She was more concerned about making a politically correct statement than being honest and truthful. I completely understand that it is not easy to admit to what she did, especially in front of the media, but she would have had my respect and the respect of many other people if she had stopped acting for a moment and had given some sign of honesty.

You get the feeling Clijsters was going to win the match anyway. It seems to have been her day, even against the very hard competition. Everyone has ups and downs. In the heat of the moment, people can get upset. Obviously Williams was NOT going to actually attack a judge with the whole world watching. It was the heat of the moment, no more, no less.
