I'd wait for Diablo 3 to come out. WoW will never let you feel like you have completed the game. Here's a patch, your gear sucks. Most of the time in WoW, an introduction of newer and stronger gear should be delayed.
Diablo 3 is more fun to play when you are all by yourself than so in WoW. You can also complete the game all by yourself if you want(albeit slower). When nobody is online in WoW, it's boring. Watcha gonna go do - go farm gold, rep, mats, pots, raid prep, read/watch strats, pug?
Did you ever get a chance to check out WoW? If so, what did you think? I'm having a hard time playing as most of my friends have quit. They "the game isn't the same." or "I miss BC. I got WoW for christmas this year and I must say, I love the game. The best part of starting to play the entire game for the first time after cataclysm came out it doesn't really matter what the different expansion packs did. You either like the game or you don't. Now, I know I am going to get a lot of flack for this, but guys, just enjoy the game. If you don't like one area, another may better suit your tastes. your thing about gear in cataclysm is that it has an item level that you are required to have before you can go into heroics as a guideline for lfg but you actually need it to get in, however the item level takes the highest gear item level in your inventory so if you got pvp gear you could technically get in, i would strongly not advise this as people will rage, also you can now use pvp points for pve gear.
I've quit because blizzard has not kept there promises with this expansion also it doesnt help they now have activision up their arse as there community help has slowly declined.
i still play wow, but it is mostly because of friends rather than content. I haven't raided for a while (quit a week or so after 4.0 came out). I pvp alot now and level toons with friends. Alliance on Kil'Jaeden and horde on Kalecgos. Several other servers, but I don't play them much.
I'm was in the same boat as you, I started playing WoW during TBC and played through Wrath of the Lich King, followed by a break from WoW and just came back a few months ago.
There are aspects about Cataclysm that I really like, but there are some that I hate. For one the community is getting worse, due to the LFD system and the broken vote kick system, but with the right group of players there is still a lot to enjoy. I play on the Alterac Mountains Server, player name "Zamix".
Too bad the Raid finder on the O menu doesn't operate - should be integrated with the RDF IMO. Never have raided ICC or uvva stuff coz I..aah..gL. Every game demands you play by its rules (even if they don't !).
If you decide to come back to WoW, you should add me on real ID. Blizzard is releasing the cross realm dungeon queueing system and it would be loads of fun doing slaying dragons with you. :) DO IT.
wrath started the decline of wow and cata was the nail in the proverbial coffin for me. Plus having rift come out yeah wow is not that much fun anymore and Rift is all the stuff i liked about wow back when it was good and so much more.
The talent-tree change was a double-edged blade. Personally, I was annoyed that Mages for instance could spec all the FOTM goodies. Now, while they only spec one tree, they simply got all the things over freebies. This was pretty much no different with the rogue class (but they really screwed that one up imo).

But yeah, you should play WoW, ofc. Start out as a new character, with the new quests, and storylines, you will certianly have a lot of fun with that. good raiding teams are a minoirty average players / casual players make up most of the play base nowadays in wow so blizz take all that into consideration and TRY to make everyone happy ... dont like it dont play it simples
For starters, I play on Elune Alliance and have almost 1 85 of every class and have done extensive research on each one and my personal favorite is still my shaman.

Good luck. Shaman ftw. Be prepared. Level 85 is a rough spot to be for anyone. Finding the guild, dedicating the man-hours in even "casual raiding" guilds, and gearing up will be an experience. I play tank and hear 40-min queue times for DPS and no loot perks for rolling LFG. If you do heroics, be warned they are no walk in the park. Some are as hard as raid content (ZA/ZG/Stonecore/VP). I have not gotten into enough raids since guild has core, and PUGs suffer from LFTank/heals delays.Have fun
I started playing in WotLK, I find Cata much better, although my guild is pretty much farm killing the first 3 bosses in BoT and the first 5 bosses in BwD. Cata isnt hard in my opinion. Its challenging, and thus, fun.
I play on an RP server cause my friend played there and I didnt wanna be alone.. well now he's quit WoW and Im stuck on an RP server that just very recently started getting heroic bosses down (only 2 guilds actually D:) and with 4.2 nerfing BwD BoT and To4W my realm (Moonglade) is pretty much gonna become a horrible server to play on :(

I have a level 85 paladin that is a prot and retri spec however I am getting bored of it so I tend to play around with other characters and experiment with different classes. I would be happy to help you level up in the game because I have nothing more fun to do, also so you can get the taste of cataclysm raiding, heroics and so on :D My main character that I spend most of my time on is called Cellio. I Play WoW and have since Beta Cata was kinda hard for the first couple weeks which i thought was fun, but now they have nerfed everything and 4.2 they are goin back to a single dungeon tier concept, like Uld, ToC, and ICC so i'de say give it a try again but don't expect to much, and 4.2 brings a 20% nerf to the bosses in Blackwing Descent, Bastion of Twilight and Throne, tho the HEroic modes aren't getting nerfed so.
The rift servers are worldwide. But honestly I wouldnt play it if I was you. If you need reasons why just ask im more than happy to explain. But i play both rift and wow and im quitting them both TODAY! Where are you from? Im going to be that guy and tell you I love you. i really have to disagree with you about the talent trees, yeah the were more choise before, but really there was always a cookie cutter pve and pvp spec so it didnt really change anything, about the term "elitist" people use that word far too often. if someone requires achi for 5 man dung thats not even close for elitist, hardcore raiders mostly are not elitists
in cataclysm, 5 man dungeons were hard but they have recieved pretty heavy nerfs and people are a lot more geared now, as it comes to raiding cataclysm first tier of hardmodes is difficultywies one of the hardest in wow, the xpansion has been out for about 6 months now and about 300guilds have cleared the content, overall cataclysm is a great expansion so far, the big minus is that we have had the same raid tier over half a year now, so poeple got bored. WTB firelands

I play wow becouse of my guild and friends there , I play wow becouse i can be much more social there than in Diablo 1 2 or Starcracft . @TheUnicornGamer I still enjoy it, but with the 4.2 raid nerfs, it feels terrible. I play an 85 Resto. Troll Druid on Azshara ..85 Disc. Priest/Combat Rogue on ...regrettably Moon Guard ..and a Shaman on Misha, I play all Alliance other than the Troll, who I started up for RL friends. You should join us! Would be lots of fun.

@zeflate I will deff check out wow. The elitism comes more into play when pugging I find. Excited to give cata a go. Blizzard always seem to do that though, same starting content for ages, then all of a sudden they release patch after patch, almost to quick for you to keep up with!

i really have to disagree with you about the talent trees, yeah the were more choise before, but really there was always a cookie cutter pve and pvp spec so it didnt really change anything, about the term "elitist" people use that word far too often. if someone requires achi for 5 man dung thats not even close for elitist, hardcore raiders mostly are not elitists

in cataclysm, 5 man dungeons were hard but they have recieved pretty heavy nerfs and people are a lot more geared now, as it comes to raiding cataclysm first tier of hardmodes is difficultywies one of the hardest in wow, the xpansion has been out for about 6 months now and about 300guilds have cleared the content, overall cataclysm is a great expansion so far, the big minus is that we have had the same raid tier over half a year now, so poeple got bored. WTB firelands
