Personally, I don't like the ones after 3. I think 1 was awesome, 2 was alright, 3 was fantastic, but 4-6 were just crap. 4-6 were basically exploitation movies for showing Freddy and pandered more toward comedy than actual horror. I personally like how this movie doesn't try to do that as much as the other ones.

However later on he became the splatterstick version of Bugs Bunny. But I am going to have to disagree on 2 being alright. It wasn't the worse of the series, by any measure, but... This is by far the best freddy in the entire franchise as wes craven gives us an insight of what the original nightmare should have been if he had had his say. The fact that heather, robert and a few others are playing themselves and that wes brings freddy into the real world makes it the best in the series.
