I'm pretty sure it was done with cameras. I think he looped the side of the stage with the balls, then while he's doing his little "Wooohhh" and writing the numbers down, someone is switching the balls with the correct ones, this is of course while the video is still looped so you can't see it. They they stop the loop and Derren Brown can walk over and the balls all have the right numbers.

But thats not how it was done anyway, it's just a cameratrick.

It is a very cheap video trick that any pro editor could do.
He could have made it more believable and far more exciting by revealing each ball one at time as the machine picked them.
What he has done is strayed into video "magic" which does not gain as much audience and viewer trust or acceptance than physical illusion.

the 24 people method probably did work for up to 4 numbers, but they would need a much longer lottery number history and more people to make six numbers

No, it's random, it's impossible to have more chance of picking the right numbers, even if you got everyone in the entire world to pick the numbers you'd still have the chance if you got a lucky dip.

Of course it was an illusion. I don't see any reason why that group could not be live with him behind the cameras. There were lots of free seats... They have been tricked more than anyone else...
