I landed at Jackson Hole Airport on January 3, 2011 and as my flight was taxiing on the runway, I saw the Maintenance building, which consisted of mostly small planes like Cessnas...but I did see one 757, and it clearly read "American" on it. neither the spoilers nor the reversers are a factor of minimum runway calculation. the plane should come to a complete stop even if these systems fail, they are just auxiliary
Unbelievable! This is so ironic, because I was on American Airlines flight 2253 to Jackson Hole Wyoming on March 15, 2011, when the Boeing 757 aircraft experienced a failure with the flaps. The flaps were stuck in the down position, pushing the aircraft upward. We had to later make an emergency landing in Salt Lake City, Utah, in order for the aircraft to be repaired.
@ipodmechanic Yeah what a coincidence. I actually saw that American Airlines plane at Jackson Hole Airport by the Maintenance building. Another coincidence is that I had a layover in Salt Lake City when I went on that ski trip to Jackson Hole

foool I said reversers are NOT a factor in certification. Geez. And most pilots FYI touch down too fast over 1.1 Vref so yes, i do fly want me to prove it
Wow Ive flown in Jackson many times, lucky the only thing on around the airport is empty sage infested flatland and in this case feet of snow. Glad no one was hurt, I didn't even hear about this on the news. When the rent-a-car stations are 30 feet from the luggage belts and another 50 feet from the ticket counter, you know your in a small airport.
It was probably the fault of the guy filming this WELL after the notice to shut off all electronics had been issued by the flight attendants. The electromagnetic given off from his camera messed with the planes computer system and caused this to happen. Glad no one was hurt.
@mk62l What? no no no... look at all of the other videos showing landings, Hell! i've filmed a landing with 20kt crosswinds, and a spoiler issue, we didn't overrun in atlanta, it's a mechanical fault with the aircraft, nothing to do with the video camera what-so ever. there are some electronic devices that can and will screw with the aircraft systems, The PA-system when someones talking on a cell gets all distorted;; a video camera will do nothing of the sort.
@PKMNOK Unfortunately, best advice is to get used to it if you plan on searching and reading comments. No-one should be commenting on the technical aspects of this video other than those in the know. But there's always some that just have to hide in their rooms and be heard.
I know this captain well. He is a great pilot. I've flown with him many many times. I always feel safe with him. I'm glad no one was hurt. OK, so I would like someone to address the man that had his cell phone on during landing! I continue to see these videos on the news etc, and it makes for great TV. But people...we ask you to turn them off for a reason!
@astewardess why....watch mythbusters....they gather used radio equipment and navigational equipment, set it up in a light aircraft set up and test the shiz out of them and low and behold no interfeearence
@astewardess there's absolutely nothing wrong to use your cellphone onboard considering it's on airplane mode or radio comm off. Cameras are fine too as long as they don't have wireless antennas in them. I film a lot onboard and the crew asks if I am on airplane mode ..
And even if they are on only a large no. Of handsets with cause trouble not 1 or 2 and the interference is only for a short duration.
Personally, I agree with the people who call into question the use of a 757 into this airport in winter. I understand that it can land there if everything is working properly and that many other 757's have landed there just fine, but I still wonder if this incident would have happened if say a regional jet or even a 737 was the type of aircraft landing.
@svscared Actually a 757 is a much better performer than a 737. Before the 757 the only jet aircraft that could operate out of this airport was a DC-9/boeing 717.
"Please God, oh please father!" Give me a break! You Wimp! Now he'll say god saved them all. Had the plane rolled over and exploded it would have been 'god's will. Religious people are completely mentally ill! I mean how else do you explain people believing in fairy tales! God didn't do a damn thing when the thrust reverser failed did he? Did God help with good weather and a nice dry runway? Of course not. The snow bank saved there ass's not GOD. Why did God want to kill those people-huh bad God
@fender4444 its his wish.. what's your problem let other People follow their own religion who are you to judge he atleast said his last prayers. I bet you would drop some f bombs there and go to an uncertain fate . Let other people do what they want to do.
Even if the pilots failed to arm the spoilers, act of deploying the thrust reversers should deploy the spoilers on a B757 (spoiler handle will automatically extend in the cockpit). When the reverser on the left engine did deploy, the spoilers did not come up in the video as far as I could tell. And why the delay in reverser application. Was a thrust reverser on deferred maintenance (right side)?
Is the guy filming this getting a fine for filming while all electronics should be powered off? Thanks for everyones interest in airplanes, Im an AMT for AA and have to say we owe it to everyone in the flight deck the courtesy of not placing blame at this point. Our pilots are the most highly trained professionals in the industry. You won't see a 22 year old kid at the throttles at AA, these guys are top notch. Just remember that when your trying to save a buck and considering flying an RJ.
@abc76148. The Guy probably had his cellphone on airplane mode which means no radio transmiyion so its fine or he could use a camera there is no radio signal emission in that I take a lot of videos onboard (check out my channel) and there's nothing wrong because I use a camera or cellphone with radio off.
because he landed before the PAPI lights and windsock doesn't mean anything, probably gave the plane more time to slowdown. The only thing that went wrong was the reversers and spoilers. I can't tell if that was pilot error or not. Heck, maybe the pilot knew of some problems like this and that's why he landed closer to the threshold to give himself more runway.
It's not really clear who or what screwed up, aside from the fact that there's a thrust reverser problem. That alone however should not cause an overrun. There have to be other factors at play here.
To address some of your comments: There is no way to absolve either the pilots or the aircraft systems from the evidence, here. Both are "in question" until evidence rules them out. Braking coefficients were reportedly good on the runway. The aircraft landed with ample runway remaining, the reversers did not behave normally, the spoilers may not have deployed. From the video, there is no way to judge the effectiveness or application of braking -- the single most important factor.
No. It will not. Countless people have videotaped landings takeoffs, and whatever else. Nothing happens or will happen. but if you use a cell phone, then it will cause a disturbance. its a rule, but basically once the flight attendants sit down, you can record and they wont know.
And plus i did not say anything about flight attendant
The spoilers either did not open either they were not set for deployment or they forgot to use them or there was a system malfunction.
The reversers and spoilers are not factored into the aircraft stopping distance. The brakes are. Using the excuse that the reversers did not entirely deploy is not a reason to go off the end of the runway. Not factoring poor braking action of about 15% to the landing distance is. We shall see. From a 15,000 hour professional pilot. Only egos got hurt.
Who does this narrator think he is? Criticizing a normal landing might be okay but an emergency landing? As long as everyone is okay, it's a good landing. If everyone is okay and the plane is okay (as in the case of this situation), then it is a perfect landing.
@bigshot724 It was a normal landing. It turned into an emergency after the aircraft in question was already on the ground. There was no indication prior to the landing that something was wrong (since spoilers and thrust reversers aren't deployed until the aircraft is already on the ground.). A good landing? Yes but certain siuations arose that were out of the pilots' control. Personally, if I were the pilot I'd be pissed but its good noone was hurt. Only egos.
@bigshot724 My point being... according to the FAA an emergency landing is an emergency landing if an emergency is declared prior to landing, not after it. The landing in question here is a normal landing that turned into an emergency.
From working on Boeing A/C, the thrust reversers may have been slow, but there are alot of reasons for this. Weight On Wheels, Radio Altitude are 2 of the parameters. 2nd there were no spoilers in view of your camera so that point is voided. 3rdly he touched down where he was supposed to. Your video is inconclusive in the fact that it appears to show the TR's unlocked but not deployed. This may have been Flight Deck Command. BTW, was there not a FA Annoucnement for all Electonics to be OFF :)
A pilot made a mistake. Happens now and then. IT's not the end of the world. If you had any idea how many unqualified pilots were out there, you would never fly again. A pilot can never admit a mistake, and his union backs him up. Men with small penises make a big deal out of being a pilot.
Couple of thoughts: (1) The camera DOES swing back enough at several points that you should be able to see if the 4-panel outboard spoilers had deployed, and they are not visible. They should have deployed on landing if armed, and AA SOP requires a callout if they don't, followed by manual deployment by the CAPT. They also should have deployed automatically when reverse was applied. (2) The commentator points out the touchdown point only to say that it WASN'T too long (late).
@wjcandee I Disagree, they did not go back far enought to come near a close enough to see the panels for the Ground Spoilers on the A/C. As a matter of fact the video never shows any Spoilers in the up or down position. I have had enough of them off in my years as a mechanic. I do not have the AMM handy, but if someone would post a picture from the AMM ATA Chapter 27-60. Besides, maybe they were on MEL.
@matatan69 It depends on the airline. All airlines are different. Everyone that I have worked for you can, but they are usually restricted to uncontaminated runways. My understanding is that this runway was listed as being uncontaminated so it is hard to tell. Limitations is different for different airlines and is agreed upon by the FAA office that is over that company.
@matatan69 You can MEL only the automatic function of the spoilers of a 757/767 (ie, auto extension upon touchdown), but you can't MEL the spoilers themselves. Any spoiler fault messages prior to departure are a definite no-go item. You must always be able to operate them manually. Ask me how I know! To cover the situation where spoilers malfunction and don't extend automatically, which happens sometimes, the non flying pilot is supposed to monitor them on touchdown.
I agree with bjet767, they touched down within the TDZ. I've also flown these jets into ugly places and they do fine if they are working right. Remember that the AVWEB guys are at zero altitude, zero airspeed and have no valid input when raising the specter of pilot error as they jump to conclusions. The assumptions here are from an obvious lack of knowledge. Anyway, charliechovictor had good points until slamming military pilots. I've flown with hundreds and most are superb.
@b190captain ...I take offense to your comment regarding the "stupid" F/A's who "let people film." We are continually telling passengers to turn off their electronic devices, as well as, looking for use during our compliance checks. Once we are in our jumpseats for landing, it is impossible to see and monitor what 180 passengers do after they turn off their phones, Kindles, cameras, etc. We do the best we can, but some people just do not obey rules. We never give "permission" to film.
I always get amused by these "film-star wannabe know-it-all's" - What a clown talking about spoilers not being deployed and if that was the pilots fault? Spoilers in this aircraft are ARMED before landing and deploy immediately when weight on main wheels is sensed! He couldn't see them come up (if they did) from his camera angle anyways. The runway condition was fair, but vicious hydroplaning could have been a factor - time will tell. The pilot did everything right on and perfect!
@b190captain Gosh, don't you just hate those stupid flight attendants who let you film landings???! ... With websites like flightlevel350 you MUST wonder why all these planes aren't crashing due to 'interference', huh.....................
@N8764E During the last phase of flight we (stupid FA's) are in our jumpseat as required, we can't see what PAX elect to do at that point.
We FA's do our job, I've happily done mine with great care and grace for two decades...I cannot believe that people find my profession to be such a nuisance to their lives, when I've always thought of the people in my care as my responsibility. Terrible feeling to be so disrespected by the people I dedicated my adult life taking care of. :-(
@tonybklyn Hi there, I've flown a lot internationally as a PAX and know you guys and girls do a fantastic job. It sure would be tough to provide consistent good service with so many demanding shitheads making your job miserable. Well done to you for 20 years of it, and please continue the outstanding work with a smile.
@michaelking42 Thanks Michael, it has it's good and bad days like any other job...but I've enjoyed my 25 years (should have said decade.5) 75 percent of the folks that step on the plane are decent folks, if's that 25 percent that can make a day go bad for us...and the other 75pct on board.
@tonybklyn. Maybe I fly on different airlines, but a great portion of the flight attendants who serve me seem to not really give a damn about the passengers. Perspective is reality.
@b190captain Gosh, don't you just hate those stupid flight attendants who let you film landings???! ... With websites like flightlevel350 you MUST wonder why all these planes aren't crashing due to 'interference', huh..................... Not implying that all the people get permission, but I always do.
Honestly using a device below "10k" like a camera, wont do anything, even using a cell phone just to record wont do anything. its when you call, or start using the web.
I dont see why anything was said about where they touched down. On 6,300 of runway thats EXACTLY where you want to put a 75 or any other mainline jet.
How about we see what the investigation uncovers, what the DFDR tape reveals, and what the conclusions are before we go preempting and second-guessing?
The spoilers are usually armed on approach and deploy automatically on touchdown. Raising the thrust reverse levers also arms the spoilers. It looks like the reverser started to deploy but got stuck. Spoilers may not have been visible from that angle.
Reverse thrust is locked out until BOTH engine reversers are fully deployed which in this airplane takes about 2 seconds. The reverser did not fully deploy and engine continued to 'spool down' to low RPM with resultng low reverse performanc
Perfhaps this video ought to serve as a reminder that electromagnetic interference is still a possibility and those (like this user) ought to be prosecuted for endangering the lives of all those on board by violating federal aviation regulations when shooting this video during a critical phase of flight!
@audioiv Are you sure about that? After years of testing for EMI and only seeing it on occasion, I certainly can't be sure. The reason the FAA still prevents electronic use during critical phases of flight is because it MIGHT interfere. There are so many so called experts out there that are willing to bet that they won't be on board during that 1 in 1000, or even the 10 the the minus 9th event. That's a gamble that I don't appreciate somebody else taking on my behalf when I'm on board!
I have flown both the Airbus and the B757 into this airport in all kinds of weather and from my observation of this video the pilot actually was spot on with the touchdown.
The 757 has a "tilt" sensor on the main gear, a nose gear compression sensor and a radar altimeter, all of which are used by the airplane's computer to determine when the airplane is on the ground. Something failed possibly delaying and or degrading the operation of the reversers, spoilers and brakes.
Before taking off from Chicago, the pilot told us of his experience: 13 years in the military and 30+ years of commercial flight. He said the Jackson Hole flight is his favorite and has been doing it for 15 years. Having flown in and out of Jackson many times, it was pretty clear that 15 seconds after touchdown we were headed off the runway.
My father flew more the 50.000 hours and still alive. He didnt have this kind of problem when he flew for the Air Force. Well, there was no money envolved.
Pilots love flying. Air Companies love money. Companies win. The rest will lose (some, with their own lives).
I have to correct myself: where I wrote "high", I should have written "low". English problem.
For those who thought I was blaming on the pilot, think again.
Flight schools dont teach "Landing in a bad weather after a delayed takeoff, with an overbooked flight, and after flying the whole day". They might even teach, but if you follow you might get fired. This is my point.
Jackson Hole is a crazy airport to land at. I really don't know from experience, but MSFS models this airport pretty well. Landing a 757 on this runway, especially in a snowy condition, is definitely a risk to be bargained for. The fact that the pilot's didn't apply every factor that helps slow the aircraft down is a mistake. Jackson Hole definitely tests every pilot's ability. I am surprised that airlines even have 757 service to this airport. I can understand with a connecting flight in a CRJ.
It's cold and snowy, what was the condition of the runway? Reverse thrust doesn't add *that* much braking power anyway. If the field was dry then the brakes alone can easily stop the aircraft without r/t.
At any rate most incidents have a number of contributing factors, it's asinine to immediately start bleating about pilot error. Pilots want to get their aircraft down safely as much as their passengers do, and are some of the most highly-trained professionals in the world.
Why is he praying the plane is only going of the end of the runway at what 60-80kts if it does go into something he is sat in the middle of the plane over the wing the strongest part so it's not like he was in danger.
@gozur325 Actually a go around can take up to an hour because if the airport is very busy when you go around you go right to the back of all the planes waiting to land
The aircraft approached high. The pilot should go around without touching. HE KNOW THAT. But then... 1- if the pilot goes around 2- it will take another 20min to land 3- flight arrives late 4- the company gets problems 5- pilot gets a warning from the company (had to go around because of a mistake)... So, the pilot thinks about all that when he sees himself in this kind of mistake, and insists. Yes. Stupid mistakes that kill people.
@boroso you should watch the video again... HE LANDED AHEAD OF THE TOUCH DOWN ZONE (BEFORE IT) Stop spitting nonsense about what should have done the pilot in the aircraft with probably ten thousands hours and even maybe military background experience... you armchair expert who knows it all...
@charlieechovictor The touchdown zone is the first 3,000 feet of runway. If he landed "before" the touchdown zone, he landed in the grass. I think you're showing a lack of knowledge here bud.
@charlieechovictor What does military background experience mean??? I'm going to make an ignorant comment like you, only true though. A good percentage of military pilots that transition to the civilian side suck...
@GMSNMS What an idiot... do you have anything to back this up..? Cuz you are CLEARLY wrong.... Military pilots have some of the best training.. Problem is when they fly with pilots who were trained on the civilian side they sometimes clash cuz the FAA and Military way of doing things is totally 180.. Doesn't mean military pilots are worse pilots...
@comicpilot YOU'RE THE DAMN IDIOT HERE. DID I SAY MILITARY PILOTS ARE WORSE PILOTS??? NO, I SAID A GOOD PERCENTAGE THAT TRANSITION TO THE CIVILIAN SIDE SUCK. THERE ARE GOOD AND BAD PILOTS. CHARLIECHOVICTOR SAID " THE PILOT MAY HAVE EVEN HAD MILITARY BACKGROUNG EXPERIENCE," SUGGESTING HE WAS BETTER THAN A NON MILITARY PILOT. THAT IS WHAT I DISAGREED WITH, SO MORON, THINK AND READ BEFORE YOU CALL SOMEONE AN IDIOT, BECAUSE YOU CLEARLY ARE ONE!
@GMSNMS Once again where is your "data" to back up your claim? Captain Sullenberger was a retired Air Force pilot, the crew of United 232 had military backgrounds too. Military pilots aren't better or worse- but you clearly suggest they have issues in transitioning. Being a military pilot i'm just curious as to where you got your data... it's all good. My military- airline collegues will get a good laugh out of your comment.
@charlieechovictor. Agreed. I am not a pilot but even I can spot a "youtube pilot" know it all who would probably pee down their leg if they ever had to pilot a real airplane.
@boroso Its not even possible to tell how well/badly the aircraft landed from this video. At the end of the day, the pilots are the experts and you should stop questioning there experience and skill. You are obviously not a pilot so you really shouldnt start branding this as a 'stupid mistake'. Accidents happen, we are all human.
@Leovenous Questions are a good thing, I completely agree. However, questioning the professionalism of the pilots should not be bought into the matter.
I agree that pilots are very well trained and professional, however even pilots question the professionalism of pilots sometimes. Pilots are still people. And at any rate when people do raise that question there are people such as you with an answer.
@boroso Hard to tell if this was the case on this particular flight but this does happen. Pilots involved in fatal / near-fatal accidents are often in the situation because of pressure from the airline to get the plane to the terminal on time. The fact is that airlines are businesses just like any other and on paper, money is more important than lives. Airline safety is only executed enough to stay within FAA limits but they couldn't give less of a shit about you or me. Many just do the bare min
You have no clue what you are talking about. AA has a no fault go around policy and it is obvious from the video that the touchdown point was exactly in the touchdown zone.
If only one of the thrust reversers ended up opening all the way, I'd question how well the plane would have handled the unbalanced thrust. The fact that it opened up an inch at least at first, right before the PPILs... well I don't want to speculate just yet. Be curious to hear what the flight recorders say. I wouldn't be surprised at icing up given the weird weather we've been having lately.
I know exactly what happened!!!!!!....there was clearly a electronic device in use below FL100. Yes that rule still bugs the shit out of me cause its stupid and unfounded.
Anyway, I am glad everyone is ok, and if I had to place my bets i'm betting on icing. Will be interesting to see what the feds come up with.
i say it had to be a bad squat switch as the spoilers never came up
my other guess would have been a iced up sleeve but then the other would have deployed most likey so its probally that switch seeing as the sleeve seemed like it was still loced as it is in flight

I understand that it can land there if everything is working properly and that many other 757's have landed there just fine, but I still wonder if this incident would have happened if say a regional jet or even a 737 was the type of aircraft landing.
svscared 1 year ago 2
@svscared Actually a 757 is a much better performer than a 737. Before the 757 the only jet aircraft that could operate out of this airport was a DC-9/boeing 717.

@abc76148. The Guy probably had his cellphone on airplane mode which means no radio transmiyion so its fine or he could use a camera there is no radio signal emission in that I take a lot of videos onboard (check out my channel) and there's nothing wrong because I use a camera or cellphone with radio off.
rahulras 1 year ago
because he landed before the PAPI lights and windsock doesn't mean anything, probably gave the plane more time to slowdown. The only thing that went wrong was the reversers and spoilers. I can't tell if that was pilot error or not. Heck, maybe the pilot knew of some problems like this and that's why he landed closer to the threshold to give himself more runway.
JonB83 1 year ago
It's not really clear who or what screwed up, aside from the fact that there's a thrust reverser problem. That alone however should not cause an overrun. There have to be other factors at play here.
dutchroll 1 year ago
To address some of your comments: There is no way to absolve either the pilots or the aircraft systems from the evidence, here. Both are "in question" until evidence rules them out. Braking coefficients were reportedly good on the runway. The aircraft landed with ample runway remaining, the reversers did not behave normally, the spoilers may not have deployed. From the video, there is no way to judge the effectiveness or application of braking -- the single most important factor.

If everyone is okay and the plane is okay (as in the case of this situation), then it is a perfect landing.
bigshot724 1 year ago
@bigshot724 It was a normal landing. It turned into an emergency after the aircraft in question was already on the ground. There was no indication prior to the landing that something was wrong (since spoilers and thrust reversers aren't deployed until the aircraft is already on the ground.). A good landing? Yes but certain siuations arose that were out of the pilots' control. Personally, if I were the pilot I'd be pissed but its good noone was hurt. Only egos.
Hbryant188 1 year ago 3
@bigshot724 My point being... according to the FAA an emergency landing is an emergency landing if an emergency is declared prior to landing, not after it. The landing in question here is a normal landing that turned into an emergency.
Hbryant188 1 year ago

Men with small penises make a big deal out of being a pilot.
whitepowerman5K 1 year ago
Couple of thoughts: (1) The camera DOES swing back enough at several points that you should be able to see if the 4-panel outboard spoilers had deployed, and they are not visible. They should have deployed on landing if armed, and AA SOP requires a callout if they don't, followed by manual deployment by the CAPT. They also should have deployed automatically when reverse was applied. (2) The commentator points out the touchdown point only to say that it WASN'T too long (late).
wjcandee 1 year ago
@wjcandee I Disagree, they did not go back far enought to come near a close enough to see the panels for the Ground Spoilers on the A/C. As a matter of fact the video never shows any Spoilers in the up or down position. I have had enough of them off in my years as a mechanic. I do not have the AMM handy, but if someone would post a picture from the AMM ATA Chapter 27-60. Besides, maybe they were on MEL.
sparkie951 1 year ago
@sparkie951 can you MEL the spoilers on a 757?? if so what are the operational implications??
matatan69 1 year ago
@matatan69 It depends on the airline. All airlines are different. Everyone that I have worked for you can, but they are usually restricted to uncontaminated runways. My understanding is that this runway was listed as being uncontaminated so it is hard to tell. Limitations is different for different airlines and is agreed upon by the FAA office that is over that company.
sparkie951 1 year ago
@matatan69 You can MEL only the automatic function of the spoilers of a 757/767 (ie, auto extension upon touchdown), but you can't MEL the spoilers themselves. Any spoiler fault messages prior to departure are a definite no-go item. You must always be able to operate them manually. Ask me how I know! To cover the situation where spoilers malfunction and don't extend automatically, which happens sometimes, the non flying pilot is supposed to monitor them on touchdown.

We are continually telling passengers to turn off their electronic devices, as well as, looking for use during our compliance checks. Once we are in our jumpseats for landing, it is impossible to see and monitor what 180 passengers do after they turn off their phones, Kindles, cameras, etc. We do the best we can, but some people just do not obey rules.

The reverser did not fully deploy and engine continued to 'spool down' to low RPM with resultng low reverse performanc

audioiv 1 year ago 2

It's unforgiving there.

I can understand with a connecting flight in a CRJ.
airman193 1 year ago
It's cold and snowy, what was the condition of the runway? Reverse thrust doesn't add *that* much braking power anyway. If the field was dry then the brakes alone can easily stop the aircraft without r/t.
At any rate most incidents have a number of contributing factors, it's asinine to immediately start bleating about pilot error. Pilots want to get their aircraft down safely as much as their passengers do, and are some of the most highly-trained professionals in the world.

@boroso Hard to tell if this was the case on this particular flight but this does happen. If only one of the thrust reversers ended up opening all the way, I'd question how well the plane would have handled the unbalanced thrust.
