Aside from the costume, what differentiates Gothic belly dancing?

That is a good question. Although my costume is mostly tribal in design (Assuit, middle eastern coins and flared pants)..but I think all those costuming elements can also translate into GBD. This style of dancing also encorporates different kinds of music than the adverage bellydancer uses and there is a definite (and different) attitude that comes across from the dancer. To really understand, I think one would have to see a GBDer live.

Hafia- I also am a gothic bellydancer, and I've noticed that, in addition to the darker emotions, there are other basic differences present.

The arms are much more fluid/hypnotic, and the hands have more of a scroll like movement rather than the typical flower patterns. The over all body movements are more connected/hypnotic as well.

Plus there are several different styles of gothic dance that can be fused into GBD i.e. lyric, hypnotic, industrial/angry, dominatrix etc.

As an fyi though, I have indeed studied 'proper' Egyptian belly dance as well as other styles of classical and non-traditional dancing... 17 years worth infact.
