I don't know guys....surely he is great but I can hear the 12 bar blues progression all over the place and thsi ain't that tough.... yes he has a lot of vocabulary and phrasings and amazing techniques, but the progression itself is streihgt forward and quite simple. If he would play Coltarin's licks in this fashion.....
@jazz054 In my opinion that is what makes it GENIUS, anybody can perform on a 12 bar blues, but nobody can do it so well. I am not a Wynton fan, but this video is amazing, he is Louis Armstrong but in the 2000's
I think the same thing. Only true trumpet players can really appreciate just how much endurance it takes to even make it through a solo like this. And then come back and play the rest of the music fresh as though you never even soloed in the first place.
And you have to remember, these guys do this shit like 4-5 times a week touring all over the world. I can't even imagine the toll it takes on their lips.
All i can say is that this man has an open channel to the divine and explores it with the fluidity of someone who has already given up the mundane things of our human aspirations. He doesn't destroy anyone, on the contrary, he feeds whoever has the stomach to give up the small things and just BLOW... amazing and heart-warming. Thanks for posting.
@Jazzical28 that's a very BOLD statement, I like it. Pepole have no idea what does it take to be a Jazz artist. Like Wynton, one shall have no limitation of music, their instrument, history, imagination, soul, taste, expression, on and on and ......
I can't believe that people actually hate on this man. Who can play better than him? Wynton is the man. I play the trumpet and wishi I could half of his ability...
Also, Wynton's trumpet, in no way whatsoever, has anything to do with his playing. Yes, doesn't play the same way he used to. Yes I liked his music from the 80s better than I like his music now. But it has nothing to do with the trumpet. It was a stylistic change in his playing and compositions. He could have played all the same licks in the 80s on the Monette that he did on the Bach, he just chooses not to.
Well its much to say about wynt. he"s teaching us as plays, thats why he doesnt sound original at times to some which is ok for me. he allows us to hear the legends of jazz in his music. i believe thats his gift and mission. he will strip you of what you know about playing and then at the end, inspire you to be the best ,thats what a good teacher does!
listen to that hip semi atonal shit he's playing in the beginning. Nothing like Woody or Freddie who would rather play pentatonically when the play "out." Plus he's got that unique New Orleans flavour in his playing.
He is a motherfucker no doubt about that, but i can't agree with you, jetzine, that he's just a copy cat. I actually think he's a very unique musician who, to a greater extend than anyone i know, is able to pick up the legacy from Luis Armstrong and those old cats and make it sound new and fresh. To me, he doesn't sound anything like Freddie or Woody exept for his, in my opinion, bad habbit of just tring to impress as he does at around 3:30 in this video. Love all three of them though!!
I agree with cadillacdude. This man is simply a genius of the trumpet and the standard of which trumpet players (especially classical) will be judged. Players like Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, Miles and Chet et al. brought something different and very appealing to the table, and there are amazingly gifted players out there now inspired by those giants, but I know of no one who can deliver cross-genre like he does. I wish more people could appreciate what this man has accomplished musically.
@175521stave i admire WM and his genious, but it must be said, to be frank, that the reasons why some flks don´t like this guy is partially his own making...
and not all his stuff is great...some is rather boring...in a way, it´s "too easily created", almost kitchy. But this was a solo, pushing the juice out of the regular 12bars
in my opinion, being a fellow trumpet player, i can say that without a shred of doubt, this man (Wynton) is the best jazz trumpet player to come around in the last 25 years. maybe in the last 100. period.
We can all talk a lot of shit on Wynton. I know I have and do. But at the end of the day, this is the video that I return to to reaffirm that Wynton is a fucking GREAT player. Is he playing anything that Freddie or Woody didn't play? No. Is he doing anything new? No. Does that make him any less of a badass? No.
Who are these people who doubt this guy's genius? Really...this Wynton is an American treasure.
Sure he doesn't play funk or fusion....there are plenty of talented musicians out there that do. But I'm convinced that if Wynton hadn't revitalized real jazz we'd be watching Kenny G vids on Youtube.
look, im totally unbaised in this situation. and here is what i have to say: the dude can play, and that was an awesome solo. thats just what it is. i dont see any need for arguing or contraversy
you can listen to a million trumpet players from the 50s and 60s who play this same style a lot better. He can obviously play and knows a lot about music but dont really c myself listening to this. i also cant relate to hes ideal of jazz.
"He can obviously play and knows a lot about music but dont really c myself listening to this. i also cant relate to hes ideal of jazz."
Here's your issue. You obviously have a pre-formed negative opinion on Wynton and that's obscuring your view of the MUSIC. There's nothing new about this 'style'; it's a 12-bar blues. Everybody plays the blues and to make it come alive, you have to dig deep within. Whether you like him or not, this is a killin' solo!!
just cause its a 12 bar blues doesnt mean you cant play something new or come up with a new way for the blues to sound. He is against the progression of jazz.. His is very pretentious and he plays very fast to show off his technique but hes just playing a historical tribute to jazz..
The problem is that there is only so much you can do to a twelve bar blues before it becomes too obscure and contrived. The originality comes from his subtle phrasing and embellishment uniqueness that you really have to listen closely to hear.
i understand what you are saying. he obviously is a good musician, i just feel he demonizes the progression of jazz. Im sure there are cracks in his theory. Would he say coltranes late group was jazz? It doesnt really swing and deviates from the blues.
I understand and i agree somewhat, but if you look at it, jazz is a probably the most general genre there is, meaning that the amount of different music that falls into the "jazz" genre is greater than any other genre. the funny thing about Wynton "demonizing the progression" is that some of his work is very expansive and progressive. check out congo square, for example. But, yes I see your point but he is very stringent about honoring tradition.
If this is true well then why is he regarded as one of the greatest jazz musicians ever, plus a pulitzer prize winner, a nine time grammy winner, etc...
Apparently he's been doing something right. I respect your point of view, but out of curiosity what do you listen to?
@edcerc I understand it's like he read a book call how to play the trumpet and played everything he learn when u hear diz and miles u know exactly, DIZ and Miles because there had THEIR own individual voices same with Bird and Trane.
Hey Putput, it's not the sound it's what he's able to play...He got around the horn so much easier, and played much more modernly. he sounds just as good on a monette. plus his bach sounded really brassy. if you like that kind of sound, that's cool, but i think he has a better JAZZ sound on his monette.
No its just the finishing on it. He uses a monette trumpet. I was lucky enough to meet him backstage after one of his concerts and hold his trumpet ^_^
There's good. There's really good. There's 1 in 100,000 good. And then there's Wynton.
He added new meanings to the word "trumpet".
Like a boss.
