I didn't appreciate this album back in the day or realise how enduring some of their music was especially tracks like this that are so simple beautiful and timeless, 'of all the things were made of' and this track are some of my most cherished music that is so special to me!
Beautiful song that now reminds me a lot of Bjork's Unison (the final track on Verspertine). I think Bjork probably has the edge - her song's more developed and her voice is on another level - but OMDs track is still v. fine, and it's interesting that they had some of the ideas Bjork would rediscover 20 years later.
@swanstep i just went and had a listin to unison by bjork and i just cant see a connection at all other than they are both music.and no offence but omds 1st 4 albums are more edgy and developed than any hyped up bandwagon jumping unoriginel bjork (or dreary sugarcubes) songs that ive heard.
How did this band get a reputation of being just a pop group? Not that there is anythng wrong with pop, but OMD were so much more....Stanlow, Statues, Romance of the Telescope, Of all the things...Wonderful
@Fangita66 I agree - OMD were so much more than just a 'pop group'. They explored sound within music. And 'The Beginning and the End' has counterpoint and a beautiful harmony. McCluskey and Humphreys wrote some good pop-type songs which were hits, but they also wrote and produced some serious music which is still great after 30 years. Your choice - Stanlow, Statues, Romance etc is my choice too!

Posted before about this song but have to say now even more than ever with this video this song takes me back to1981 when my mum died....sad times then when listening to the song with the beautifull and haunting choral music, but now I just remember the happy times we had together so now I smile everytime I hear this song.
Tour at tail end of last year was absolutely phenomenal and just when I thought they had no chance of reproducing the excellence of the 80's from the studio, the History of Modern is produced and it blew me away. These guys have no peers from my 80's days. They are quite simply the most fantastic electro pop band that there has ever been. McCluskey's legend will live with me forever.
im more of newer music like indie music from now, but...... i have never heard something like this and its just so awesome sounds like there ahead of their time!!!
Thanx for this video.....when I first heard this song so many years ago the first thing that came into my head when hearing the music was angels and so your video beautifully compliments this OMD classic
My absolute favourite track of all time and I love the video. Sets the song off perefctly.
