  • Thanks for this video! Great explanation, took me about 10 minutes to change both headlights!

  • just spin the light around and once its in the right position it will slide right in. Thanks a lot i couldn't have done it without you!

  • Thanks for the vid man, literally went from me having no idea what to do for 10 minutes to fixed in 3 haha.

  • thanks so much! I thought: this should be simple enough that I can do it myself! I will wear some gloves though to keep my manicure pristine :)

  • Thanks for the video, I changed mine out in about 10 minutes. Saves all the $ taking it to the shop

  • Hey thank ! for you help...

  • Thanks i'll try it but it's not easy to do it

  • THANK YOU DUDE.

  • The hardest part was placing the headlight. For less stress remove battery. Thanks to this video I knew what to expect thank you mister

  • Thanks! The retaining clip on the bulb on my model (1998 VW 4, 1.6 gasoline) clipped downwards instead of sideways (and was very hard to clip off - I forced it off with a screwdriver)

  • would this instructional video be the same for a Jetta 2003 and up?

  • Im useless at working with my Golf, just watched this and reluctantly thought I would give this a go at half seven at night in the middle of winter, with my lapop on top of the engine and a lamp to assist me in seeing the area I was working. It took me all of three minutes if even, my local mechanic said it would take an hour and was going to charge me £45. Simple, though mine was a drivers side (UK) bulb, dont know if its easier. **Just watch the clip referred to does come away, easy fixed.

  • Thx for the video really helpfull

  • Just thought I'd let you know how grateful I am you put this video up.. I had no idea what I was doing and this massively helped out! Thanks from London, England.

  • Thanks for the video ....very helpful

  • Thanks for the awesome video--I changed mine in 10 minutes thanks to these instructions! I think that it's ridiculous that the manual doesn't offer any help and just says "it's complicated--bring it to your dealer."

The hose that you mention in the video that you don't know what it does is the cable that unlocks the hood when you pull the lever. Nothing fragile or vitally important.

  • Thank you for this video! The owner's manual advises taking it to a mechanic for this. You saved me some cash! It took me just a couple of minutes.

  • Thanks for the video. I lots one of the fasteners as it just flung off somewhere and on the other side I cant get the fastener one. Its near impossible to fiddle enough in that small space and clip it back on. So at the moment my bulbs are "lose". Any tips?

  • Just changed the Bulb on my MK4 Golf, found that removing the battery, makes lfe alot easier, especially when putting clip back on Bulb..

  • It beats the haynes manual.. ;o)

  • Thanks...Death4nchor

  • tylertyler82, i feel your pain too.

As I've got to do the one behind the Battery now.

Prior to this I had dramas with the clip on the bulb..DOH!!

  • Thanks for your directions, very helpful. I found I just didn't have room for my hands in the space between the lampholder and the battery so it took me a while to finish. Thanks again!

  • update: thanks to your visual directions I installed my new driver's side headlight in less than 5 minutes. Bravo!

  • I notice between 2:55 and 3:00 your video was edited. How long did it take you to actually get the headlight into the cradle snugly? It seriously took my 3 hours to do it one time, I'm not looking forward to it this time :/

  • @tylertyler82 Remember this is only replacing the main bulb in the headlight unit. It tooks me only a minute or two to get it to sit in correctly.

  • Top vid cheers, just done both my 52 plate headlights. The battery got in the way of the off side light big time, but doing the near side first helps, especially sussing the metal release catch mechanism and locating the wings on the black plastic weather seal when putting back on. Cheers.

  • Thanks a bunch, Death4nchor! My 2002 Jetta was close enough to your 2004 Golf that I got thru it without even a swear word! For me, thats @#$%^&! amazing !

  • The title suggested this was for changing the headlight, but it's just for the headlight bulb. :-(

  • Whoa, Death Anchor?! Are you by chance an F-Zero fan? :)

    Nice vid!

  • @thetwopointslow Yes, SNES, N64 and GameCube versions.

  • @Death4nchor That's beyond awesome man. I'd say F-Zero X is probably my favorite out of the three. YOU GOT MOOSE POWER

  • This was the most helpful how-to I was able to come across. Procedure was pretty much exactly the same for my 2002 GTI. Thanks!

  • THANK YOU! YOU ARE THE MAN! I would kiss you if I weren't married.

  • Huge help, I have the same exact car. Thanks!

  • Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I have no auto skills, but I followed your directions and was able to replace the bulb in my 2001 Golf.

  • awesome! thanks a lot man. its the same on my 2007 Golf!

  • thks so much for ur help... God bless u

  • quality dude!! saved me a load of time!!

  • Did it in 10 mins, thanks!

  • Thanks a lot ! You save my time and money !

  • Finally figured it out with the help of some digital pictures and good flashlight. Thanks.

  • Finally figured it out. Took some digital photos so I could see what was going on. Getting the dust cover back on was a bear, though.

  • I never could get that spring clip off the back of the bulb. I had a flashlight on it, and short of ripping it off with big pliers, there was no way. I wouldn't budge.

  • Thank you! I replaced the bulb on my 2003 Jetta with no problem. I couldn't have done it without your video!

  • Thanks Very Much. I was quoted a price of 89.95 to change both bulbs. I bought the bulbs for about 25 bucks and was able to install them pretty easily. Once you get the feel of where things sit, it's not bad at all. Thanks for saving me 65 bucks and a couple of hours time!

  • I drive a VW Jetta 2002 and the hookup is kinda similar. I just needed a road map of what to do. Jetta's don't have that unplug wire that he was talking about tho (thankfully). Thanks so much for your help!!

  • This video is a gem, thanks for posting this, I couldn't figure out how to get the protective cover out of the way.

  • This is massively helpful, thank you.

  • fantastic video -- watched twice and was able to change both headlights in 10 minutes. many thanks for putting this up.

  • Thanks for the Video, helped a lot.

  • Thanks a ton for this video. Was about to waste money at the mechanic's this morning but instead went to the auto store and spent $15 on the bulb. The trickiest part was getting the securing ring off. Wasn't sure how to remove it at first. Figured it out after a couple minutes though. Thanks again.

  • i dnt have that plastic cover that u took off in the beginning.

  • Thanks a lot for this, it was very helpful :D

  • thanks!

  • Thanks for the introduction

    Awesome help,

    Really appreciate it.

That way you know what to expect

  • Thank you so much you really r a life saver

    Cheers man

  • Thank you very much! I was going to remove the battery before I started, but now I know how to replace it.

  • A small note - the final clip to release the bulb is unclipped by pushing in and down (towards the ground) to unhook the clip. It took me a few to figure that one. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the video, I couldn't have done it without you!

  • This is a great guide and pretty much exactly how I've done it in the past. I would say that it's a good idea to check the bulb works before you put the black weather proof cover on (with retaining spring clip). The offside sidelight is more of a challenge so a video for that would be great

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you! This was such a helpful video. I seriously spent 45 minutes trying to figure out how to get in there to change that bulb ... after watching this it took 5 minutes to finish the job.

  • very helpful indeed - made it easy for me

  • well done. very helpful.

  • Quality video, really helped me out...I was sooo stuck, only difference is that I have the soft battery cover but it's no different really

  • thanks for that, you made everything easier for me. although my car seems o be lacking the scrwed on plastic top thing. and ive just realised that ive left the plastic cover for the battery off. oops.

    good video.

  • thank you sooo much for posting this!!!!! I was having the hardest time trying to figure out how to remove that back plate.. lol.

  • Very timely...thanks a bunch!!

  • Nice! I gotta do this tomorrow. Thanks!!!!

  • Very useful. Thank you.

  • Thank you!! Was able to replace the light in 15 min!

  • Wonderful Video and thanks for posting! I struggled with my golf for 2 hours without figuring out the way, but this video made it easy to change the headlight in only 10 minutes!

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to post this (and the close-up of the clip)- it rocks!

  • thankss a alot

    respect from Holland

  • Thankkkkkkksssss!

  • I never thought YouTube could be so useful. Thanks for taking the time to create this.

  • Thanks so much. This was really helpful. It is so hard to see the clip to get it open, and you explained it perfectly.

I really appreciate you taking the time to post this.

    Cheers!

  • awesome thank you, i drive a cabrio, but it has the same front end as your golf, just wish it had the same motor! hahah

  • Thank you. Geat posting.

  • Thanks. Figured if it helped one person it is worth it. Also the design doesn't change much between years and models, so the video is useful for a lot of VW owners.

  • Thanks for posting! Saved me a trip to the garage.
