Thanks! The retaining clip on the bulb on my model (1998 VW 4, 1.6 gasoline) clipped downwards instead of sideways (and was very hard to clip off - I forced it off with a screwdriver)
Im useless at working with my Golf, just watched this and reluctantly thought I would give this a go at half seven at night in the middle of winter, with my lapop on top of the engine and a lamp to assist me in seeing the area I was working. It took me all of three minutes if even, my local mechanic said it would take an hour and was going to charge me £45. Simple, though mine was a drivers side (UK) bulb, dont know if its easier. **Just watch the clip referred to does come away, easy fixed.
Just thought I'd let you know how grateful I am you put this video up.. I had no idea what I was doing and this massively helped out! Thanks from London, England.
Thanks for the awesome video--I changed mine in 10 minutes thanks to these instructions! I think that it's ridiculous that the manual doesn't offer any help and just says "it's complicated--bring it to your dealer."
The hose that you mention in the video that you don't know what it does is the cable that unlocks the hood when you pull the lever. Nothing fragile or vitally important.
Thanks for the video. I lots one of the fasteners as it just flung off somewhere and on the other side I cant get the fastener one. Its near impossible to fiddle enough in that small space and clip it back on. So at the moment my bulbs are "lose". Any tips?
Thanks for your directions, very helpful. I found I just didn't have room for my hands in the space between the lampholder and the battery so it took me a while to finish. Thanks again!
I notice between 2:55 and 3:00 your video was edited. How long did it take you to actually get the headlight into the cradle snugly? It seriously took my 3 hours to do it one time, I'm not looking forward to it this time :/
Top vid cheers, just done both my 52 plate headlights. The battery got in the way of the off side light big time, but doing the near side first helps, especially sussing the metal release catch mechanism and locating the wings on the black plastic weather seal when putting back on. Cheers.
Thanks a bunch, Death4nchor! My 2002 Jetta was close enough to your 2004 Golf that I got thru it without even a swear word! For me, thats @#$%^&! amazing !
I never could get that spring clip off the back of the bulb. I had a flashlight on it, and short of ripping it off with big pliers, there was no way. I wouldn't budge.
Thanks Very Much. I was quoted a price of 89.95 to change both bulbs. I bought the bulbs for about 25 bucks and was able to install them pretty easily. Once you get the feel of where things sit, it's not bad at all. Thanks for saving me 65 bucks and a couple of hours time!
I drive a VW Jetta 2002 and the hookup is kinda similar. I just needed a road map of what to do. Jetta's don't have that unplug wire that he was talking about tho (thankfully). Thanks so much for your help!!
Thanks a ton for this video. Was about to waste money at the mechanic's this morning but instead went to the auto store and spent $15 on the bulb. The trickiest part was getting the securing ring off. Wasn't sure how to remove it at first. Figured it out after a couple minutes though. Thanks again.
A small note - the final clip to release the bulb is unclipped by pushing in and down (towards the ground) to unhook the clip. It took me a few to figure that one. Hope it helps.
Thanks for the video, I couldn't have done it without you!
This is a great guide and pretty much exactly how I've done it in the past. I would say that it's a good idea to check the bulb works before you put the black weather proof cover on (with retaining spring clip). The offside sidelight is more of a challenge so a video for that would be great
Thank you, thank you, thank you! This was such a helpful video. I seriously spent 45 minutes trying to figure out how to get in there to change that bulb ... after watching this it took 5 minutes to finish the job.
thanks for that, you made everything easier for me. although my car seems o be lacking the scrwed on plastic top thing. and ive just realised that ive left the plastic cover for the battery off. oops.
Wonderful Video and thanks for posting! I struggled with my golf for 2 hours without figuring out the way, but this video made it easy to change the headlight in only 10 minutes!
Thanks. Figured if it helped one person it is worth it. Also the design doesn't change much between years and models, so the video is useful for a lot of VW owners.
Thanks for this video! Great explanation, took me about 10 minutes to change both headlights!

@tylertyler82 Remember this is only replacing the main bulb in the headlight unit. It tooks me only a minute or two to get it to sit in correctly.
