I love this video I have been going to the shop and she always cuts chunks out of my hair and it seems my hair never gets any real length. I also have decided to transition to natural hair and this will be a big help. Not a fan of the big chop so I'm going slow with it. Thanks
Seeing the thumbnail I had to check this video out. My hair is a couple inches shorter than yours, but I tried this technique. I wanted to be the one who cut my hair. It just seemed right to me, and simple this way not seeing it done anywhere. Didn't work too well for me. Fingers are too unevenly shaped and hair slips through. For a perfectionist freak like me I need ultimate precision and so I opt for Feye's method. Unfortunately my hair is too short to do that, so I just S&D for now.
A lot of my previous stylist would cut my hair, not trim CUT. I would always leave with my hair shorter than what i came in as. It seemed after so many months i would always have that same length. I told the stylist well it looks like my hair is not growing. she would say it was but she just was cutting way too much off. I don't see the point if they do that all the time. I found a lady finally that would not cut off that much and now i actually see a lot of growth.
My hair is not an even length throughout my whole head like yours ( i have layers throughout my hair) so I'm afraid that I won't catch all of my scraggly ends.
thank you for posting this video. i will definitely try this technique. never trimmed my hair for myself. will see how this goes. (keeping fingers crossed)
i love this video! i really need to learn how to trim my own hair. the stylist CUT my hair when i say trim. my hair ends up shorter than it was when i enter the salon.
I also cut my own hair. I have shorter hair than you, but I use the same tecnique, only that I have to cut my hair "blindly" in the back trusting in my ability to combe it strait, and keeping my fingers in a straight line. Afterwards I trim the sides a bit so they match up with the lengt I cut in the back, and finishing it off with layering it a bit using the same procedure as you did. People often comment on that I always manage to keep my hair so neatly cut and in good condition. *lol*

i had started "dusting" and didn't even know that it was a technique.. lol.. i just knew that my hair had grown out sooo much and i did NOT want to go to a stylist and they cut chunks of "dead hair" off...so i started trimming myself.. exactly what you did except i never brushed it all up like that.. i just combed it all back and then on the sides... i get so many compliments on how healthy it looks and a stylist never touched it!
Thanks for this video. I haven't had a trim since April and it was much needed but budget it too tight to go to the salon. This video saved me time, money and a lot of headache.
My hair is just up to my collar bone and i'm trying to grow it out. I have a few layers not much. Last time i cut it was a few months ago and i cut it with kitchen scissors (i know big mistake). Now i have more split ends. My hair is healthy except for these ends and i really want them off but hate going to the hairdressers. Where can i get some cutting scissors and which ones should i use?
Depending on your budget you can go to your local beauty supply store. My first pair of shears were ordered from a catalog ( those were the ones that I used on clients) I lost them and ended up buying some from walmart lol! As long as they are sharp you can get a good cut!
Hey so if I don't want layers should I opt out of pulling my hair all the way to the top? I'm trying to gradually cut away the layers I got at the salon...
A-ha! I thought my hair would naturally fall into layers if I grabbed it all, pulled it up and cut. It was just logical; based on the length of hair from every part of the head up to the ends, as it's pulled up, it would naturally vary in length. Thanks! I'm going to trim my hair this weekend.
Yes, you can always attack those areas on a stand by stand basis. You can take litlle sections at a time, inspect the ends and cut off all of the troubled areas.
You have no idea how you've just saved me! I've been avoided the salon cuz they always wanna wack to the scalp. Thanks for the info on a true dusting.
Love this video! That is what a TRIM should be. I made an appt. for a relaxer over the weekend, stylist asked me if I needed a trim and I told her I would do it myself and she looked at me like I was crazy. I don't know why stylists feel as though they are the ONLY ones that know how to trim hair. Most of the time you ask for a trim and they CUT it. But anyway, lol..I will be trying your method once I get my relaxer tomorrow.

This trim is not a reliable way to trim, you can still have un-even hair-you need another person to trim the back of your hair properly.
I know hair grows back but I want longer hair and aint taking no risks to having fucked up hair.

I thought that was a trim, isn't a dusting where you target all split ends like search and destroy?!?!

mizshae101 2 years ago
allow the shorter hair to " catch up to the rest of your hair. Basically leave it alone:)
