@TheMattaboy John is a great shop owner. So head on down and see if has some time to show you. He's usually busy tying flies and helping people, but you never know. Or at least he can point you in the right direction for materials and some instruction. Tight lines!
i don't get alot of chances to go out fishing... i want to know where i can get more fish anywhere...i'm in a small town called fresno and it's hard to get some good fish here with a fly can any one help me look for places in and near fresno?
@hangbulavard Fresno, CA? I grew up in the Fairfield, Vacaville area. Been to Fresno many times passing thru to the natl forest, but never fished in the city. But I do remember seeing park ponds and neighborhood ponds. If there not bone dry, should be fish in them. Otherwise talk to the local bait store. Your also within an hours drive of the Sierra/Sequoia Forest and some great fishing..your very lucky. Tight lines!
@mnflyfishing yea thats true that sierra/sequoia is a great place to fish and such but the best times are during the winter... but that's just from my point of view..and it's kind of hard to go up there with out snow tires
@hangbulavard There's hundreds of places near and around Fresno for fly fishing. Fresno, ca is right in between the Kings and San Joaquin rivers. Numerous lakes and hundreds, if not, thousands of miles worth of creeks and streams. You are right next to one of the greatest national forests on the planet. People literally travel from all over the world just to go to Yosemite and the surrounding areas. Some of my favorite creeks are Lewis, Dinkey, and Big Creek.
Hey, I'm new to fly fishing and I'm trying to order some wooly buggers. I have a 9 FT 7 weight rod and reel outfit and I was wondering what size hooks I need. I want a size that i can use both on Trout and Largemouth Bass.. Thanks in advance.
I agree the art of fly fishing for any fish is more about the whole package, getting outdoors, spending time with friends, and catching fish is what's it all about.
I kid around with John (the guy casting) a lot about his casting in this video. He's normally a very good caster, but when the tapes rolling, it's much different. This was all filmed in one day, lots of pressure to catch a fish while the film is rolling :). You feel like you need to be perfect, instead of being just being relaxed and natural.
Hey man i made that same fly,,but it was about 8 inches longer than yours, and it works great for 60lb giant trevally in hawaii, poppers work great man ,nice job.
I agree with atstsu and hatterasdream, he is not a good caster. at about 1:40 into the video you see him dumping his back cast. I would be afraid to be in the same boat with him.
I fish the mid-section of the Susquehanna River in PA (Marysville up to Liverpool). 8 weight rods are standard. I'll use a 5-6 weight when I fish up in the tributaries where the bass are smaller.
I consider myself very fortunate to live near such a smallmouth factory. 3-4lb smallies are common with some 5 and six pounders having been caught (but not by me... yet). When the timing is just right, 30+ fish days are normal.
Fortunate and lucky :) 8 weight rods are the norm here as well, besides the fly factor, we might hook into a 50" musky or a big pike :) I've seen the Susky, never fished it though, passing through, reminds me of the Upper Mississippi.
Shorter rods equals less distance, tighter places, longer rods more distance & line control. 9' is considered standard, then you go up & down from there. I'm 6'1" and throw all 9 footers and 1 8'5".
Great video! He's right, I find that flyfishing and especially fly tying are calming and I go to the vice often when I want to relax or calm down, works every time. Thanks for posting great job!
It depends on what size/type of flies your throwing, distance your casting, bigger fish you might catch, etc. An 8wt will throw big/wind resistance flies further then say a 5wt. You can still land fish on either, but easier to cast with an 8wt. An 8wt will help you land that 60" musky in the river he's fishing.
Excalent video. I have never heard anyone talk about the "calming effects" flyfishing has on a person like that before. Thats something I can really relate to myself. Flyfishing helped me in about the same ways he spoke of in the video. Thank you for posting and Tight Lines to you.
He's normally a good caster, but during filming, you try to do things in hurry, try to be perfect and trying to catch a fish, doesn't always work out as in the video. I ride him on this all the time :)
Your video is fabulous. Good people.I have caught & released over 200 small mouth in a week in the Georgian Bay Basshole.I have seen 9 pounders & we released them all unharmed of course. You are a very lucky man to have such a wonderful woman that loves to fish with you.Not many around. flybenji
Excellent video, thanks for posting.

i just got into fly fishing and im wonderin which fly is best for pickerel
wrongforright123 2 years ago
I'd be surprised if there's ANYTHING you could throw that they wouldn't hit if it's moving!
I would NOT use a strike indicator. I nearly caught pickerel that were hanging onto a bobber while spin fishing.
If it moves a pickerel will hit it. That said, I'd bet a wooly bugger or a muddler would tear'em up.

He's a great fisherman and fly tier, but his cast could use a lot of work.

They're not even comparable. Fly fishing is SOOO much more than just setting the hook on a fish.

His casting needs work
his back cast shouldnt hit the water
if you are trying to improve your cast
The backcast is usually your focus
if you master that your forward cast will come naturaly
