John Beresford Tipton (a multi-billionaire), was himself all alone. And, although he didn't know PERSONALLY the recipients of the million dollars, he knew OF them, and wanted to see, in each case if the money was a Godsend, or a terrible curse. In a way, he played God with these people's lives. Excellent show!

@rolex452 I used to love the line that Tipton said every week,
" Mike....your next one" as he was handing Michael Anthony the check.
Classic series this was, I always think that somewhere in a warehouse these films are sitting on a shelf. It's a shame. At least on You Tube you can at least wet your beak by watching a few clips of these old shows.
In the early episodes of the series (1955-'56), the recipient of the million dollars didn't always have a "happy ending" waiting for them...note the similarity of Mike's good-bye to Iris at 4:09 to that other famous "good-bye scene" in "Gone With the Wind". If TV standards had been more relaxed in 1955, he would have said exactly what Rhett said to Scarlett!
Brilliant to see that statement here. I think this is almost a McCoy-ish character. I wonder if anyone had this in mind when making up McCoy's backstory with his wife and the unhappy divorce...
He also played a doctor on episodes of Laredo and Bonanza.

I think it was something that Deforest carried with him. It has now become apart of the Star Trek grammar. Like Arnold with "I'll be Back!"
