Love this version, they are swingin mad hard on this tune. Bud was one of the greats and this is a must know standard for all the jazz heads out there. If you like this tune, check out my version of it with my quartet on my youtube channel. While your there, please comment and subscribe!!
This was the "Blue Note" in Paris.. Its still there.. Bud worked there a lot.. A total hip jazz club a la française.. they dig jazz more than americains..thats so weird..but I believe its true.. merde .. on voyait le jazz a la television aux EU, mais ce temps est perdu pour jamais
@Doumbeck The original Blue Note in Paris that Bud played at has been closed since 1968. It was on the Right Bank, 27 rue d'Artois. It was recreated in a studio in 1986 for the movie Round Midnight.
ggallone is right .bud had different periods in his life and this session is probably not his best but never the less he is a legend one of my alltime heroes.many thanks
This is one of my favorite versions of the this song. Powell recorded this live in Paris. The story goes at this concert (at the Blue Note Paris) Powell was trudging through his set...until Thelonious Monk walked in (funny...In Walked Thelonious..In Walked Bud). After that, Bud started shredding, and covered a fair amount of Monk tunes later in the set. Glad Monk showed up and wish I could have been there.
Awesome Bud..Alas..the performances on these late-fifties blue note sessions are but a pale shade of what he did in the end of the forties..Before they hit him and before he went through electroshock "therapy". Look for some of his early Verve/Blue Note recordings 47-51..They are immense.
There Will Never Be Another You with Bud Powell trio is pure jazz! I invite you to come on our channel - televisualfilmes, a jazz trio of Brazilian musicians - Mariano Trio, playing that song and other jazz classics and themes from Broadway and Hollywood.
No argument there. Bud IS bebop. Indeed he phrases like a horn player. Oscar on the other hand has transcended horn phrasing. His lines are beyond bebop and filled with musical soul. Now strictly in terms of groove and swing, Oscar's swings with brass balls.. Not to mention being a stellar accompanist --> Dig . . . Oscar Peterson Trio - Live in Italy 1961 - Part 4
eh hem, I don't think so. Oscar is the heavyweight champion of swing. Literally. He's got hands like Godzilla. As powerful as T-Rex, and as quick and agile as Bruce Lee, Oscar's got Garner beat hands down. And don't forget his fat ass chords and undeniable SOUL.
Peterson is a monster when it comes to the piano. The ability to express a myriad of ideas at unbelievable tempos just put him ahead of everyone else. Mentioning Garner - many of his peers appreciated what he did but weren't that impressed. Even Count Basie, who could express more with one note or a raised eyebrow than most, basically dismissed Garner during a conversation with Peterson.
@MattieSongbird Oscar Peterson had the chops and could definitely swing. But Bud really developed bebop piano language. His accompaniment leaves a bit more space than Peterson usually did, harmonically and rhythmically. Also, Peterson never wrote anything like "Dance of the Infidels," "Wail," "Dusk in Sandi," "Glass Enclosure," "Un Poco Loco," or any of Bud's incredibly unique compositions. And really, what are we doing putting Peterson against Garner and Powell? Each are geniuses.
@kirksiesz I agree, especially with regard to trying to compare Peterson and Powell - a real false dichotomy. Sure, Powell developed the language that Peterson spoke so brilliantly, but he was so much more than just an innovator on the piano.
@MattieSongbird : you're all Juillard students right?...Cartesian outcomes only..get fucking real...they're all gr8 for their own reasons...it's not the Dodgers v the Red Sox...idiots
@kevinherbert, I don't think anybody said they weren't great. lol. I just feel that Oscar swings like a champ. But since ur calling names, you can kiss my... lol
@ghostofdolphy Have to agree with you about Michelot. Love Bud Powell and he is great here, but if you can play behind Powell like THAT, you've definitelygot some stuff. So many great talents that I've never heard.
My all-time favorite piano player... no cheep embellishment! A Charlie Parker of piano!

Bud was more than a great pianist, he was a poet, a true artist. And as for swinging, the only person that swung harder, IMO, was Monk.

Yea, gotta love Pierre Michelot's accompaniment behind Powell. He got that *thing*, groove I guess, but it's a little more than that.
Bud's in fine lyrical form too, great standard here.
