  • There's still some sunlight reaching the moon, even though it's in Earth's shadow. A little sunlight is being passed through the Earth's atmosphere, bent slightly, and then lightly washing over the moon's surface. Think of the light you see at sunset. After the sun goes down, the horizon glows red and orange. This same sort of light is hitting the moon, filtered by the whole entire Earth's rim before reaching the moon. Make sense?
