@Conway79 I think he meant that he wrote the data, so if it has been removed or modified in any way, he would know, so the police would be relying on him to inform them about the integrity of it. Therefore he would be the kid's only hope of staying out of prison.
Man, that must have scared him! I wonder who was recording!
The big thing in his speech that doesn't make sense is "I am the only person that can tell whether the data on that computer is still on that computer", then he goes on about the thief returning any copies they might have made. If the data is encrypted or hidden in such a way that he doesn't expect *anyone* but himself to even know it's there, why is he worried about copies being made? That, and the thing about Washington, are his big give-aways.
I'd have told him after his speech, that "Sir, as a matter of fact: pigs fly. I am dead serious. Not a good place for a pig to be. And the President of the US is very interested why you think we are stupid to belive all this..."
The teacher went too far. To listen to him, that computer had everything on it except the nuclear launch codes for World War 3 and the secret of KFC's 11 herbs and spices. I'm sure that just sitting there, the kid who took probably went from panic to "oh bullshit".
@CAPNMRVL I work in applied research and it sounds pretty real. Companies are very jealous of their data because even if its just a bunch of numbers, they have paid a lot of money to carry out the experiments and get those numbers as an advantage for themselves.
He should have stopped bluffing with one mistake that the thief made. His list is ridiculous. If they have an eyewitness, they don't need the gps. If the have the gps, they don't need the witness. Most significantly, if they already know who the thief is and where the laptop is, then why does the prof need to put his class through this act? I call BS.
i think you are spot on. I believe what he said about the information on the computer, i don't think he has anyway of tracking it though, why else would he go in front of the class. If i was the person who took it though, I'd try to ditch that thing ASAP.

NOBODY got owned. This video is 5 years old and the idiot professor never got his laptop back.
If there really was secret data on it, he wouldn't be stupid enough to leave it alone in a classroom.

The Professor is bluffing. Half of what he said are just scare tactics.
