  • Jo the waiter was a bullfrog!

Was a good friend of mine

I never understood a single word he said

But he held me close, serving wine in Basements!

Long gone I recall good times!

Joyyyyyyy to world all the machmen and girls

Joy to the machines that rock

    joy to M.E.

  • Jo the lion.....not another Numan rip off??????

  • Am a big fan (from way back in 78), but those live movements are a bit too Cliff Richard for my liking...... sorry GN.

  • The freaks arrived broken needles and blood - "What you on man to get those eyes?" - Classic Numan.

  • This song is Garys Wife's all time fav song its great.

  • @4441Rob Ahhh but does she know its about a girl called Joanne i wonder.

  • Garrrrrry! Every day we die for you and your generation. It's okay. So what?: name someone who is perfect, without foibles. You won. It's okay. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for giving us this floor, this truth. Thank you. We could never have been our selves without you. So now it's our turn.

To give it back to you. To bring you along, one generation jump starting the other; hopscotch whip-watch stitch slitch slitch-slatch, time trip mish mash through the multiverse .

  • I absolutely love this, Gaz your a gem

  • Oops . I pressed dislike by mistake. Long time fan, lookin' forward to seein' Gary live in Adelaide in May!

  • Still prefer the tubeway Army version folks..soz

  • que canción tan bacana!!!....Gary Numan: visionario!

  • Gary channels his inner Lou Reed perfectly in this song.

  • How sexy can this man be ? he has always been sexy , sighhhhhhhhhhhhh for 30 plus years of obsession it does sound like its about gay men got to say ,,,, doesnt mean he is though

  • @belladonnawitch Many years ago he was quoted as saying, when asked if he was gay, ‘Not as a rule.’ I’ve no idea whether or not he meant it---if he actually said it. Maybe it just fit in with the whole ‘Bill Lee’ thing. I couldn’t care less. He’s the nazz.

  • my Favourite and my dads!!!!!!!!

  • GREAT LITTLE SONG

  • my respects for gary numan good guy

  • Loved it then and love it now! x

  • I love this song . I must confess I cried

  • love this tune and I must confess I cried

  • stumm23 i hope it was a girl he named after this song as its a girl called jo lol

  • @NumanFanlfc Its actually about a fictional gay relationship "HE held me close behind the doors marked GENTLEMEN", also if it was a girl it would be waitress

  • @guywholikesvids

Your actually wrong there m8 the actual lyrics go ...

Joe the waiter held me close theres no HE as u put it .

Its actually about an ex girlfriend of his .

Its like S.U'S in Are Friends Electric its a girl called Susan

Theres nothing fag about Numans lyrics m8

when i met Numan in liverpool in 79 i asked him about it

& he said it was Joanne .

so please know your Numan history before u contradict me m8 thanks

  • @NumanFanlfc ty for correcting me, but btw i wasn't saying he was gay, only that it was about a fictional gay relationship

  • @NumanFanlfc , why so homophobic?

  • me mate love this, named his child after it

  • Sooooo good! :)

  • See the drum roll at the intro to the second "verse" screwed up which is a damn shame. In fact, this is a rare poor drum performance in my opinion. I think the drummer is

    tense and it shows.

Great tune and great post, what show is it from?

  • GAWD, THIS SONG IS SOOOOOO GOOD.

  • Few live versions fully embrace the original and do them justice however Gazza done well with this one.....10 out of 10

  • I still know all the words to this one from years ago !! Just shows up my age.

  • @hodgietwo grins, "I know tht feeling all too well my friend. Keep it real keep it Gary Numan and life will be good for those of us who are feeling a little bit older." Your Friend, RwBGuardian

  • Top tune- ive just done a version of this too

  • Great vid!

  • I am 50 I liked GN then and as I've got older I've followed. Christ I was introduced to Heavy metal & liked some of it which Numan has even got HM fans following him! (Dark Side)

  • From the album "tubeway Army"

for me. one of his finest songs and a treat to see him perform it live..

hahaha, it's nearly as good as my version.

    ;-)

  • Beautiful.

  • Pure brilliance. I got into Numan in 80 and have always thought he was one of the best musicians around period. While I sometimes miss the Moog synthesizer so predominant in his earlier solo work, I see his work evolving with the same intensity. Awesome song

  • Enough said pal. I could not agree more

  • classic.. nuf said

  • sorry...Gary...you're BRILLIANT....Leed.

  • Gary ....your BRILLIANT. You're friend Leed. :)

  • that was to futtermeinego

  • Great!

    Coxynuma.66.

  • Thank you so much for this so rare wonderful song

  • oh MY GOD!

this song has been so dear to me for SO long. It helped me "come out" in the 70's. I was "unwashed and slightly dazed" when I (just now) discovered this version...

not only tears dripping down, maybe even a few sobs. The song is very special to me.

  • this is... well, since i found that yesterday i watched it about twenty times. there are pure diamonds in the old tubeway army material, and this is perhaps the best of them.

the performance itself is just stunning. hail to numan.

  • This stuff is great, and his older stuff is always the best. i wish He would go back and play songs from i Assassin and Dance live more often, so many gems on those two records and they defaintly beat that Pure junk.

  • how dare you. pure kicked ass.

but he often does noise noise from i assassin.

  • How dare me? I spoke my opinion, so how dare you become offended by it.

i've been listening to Numan since the 80's. Pure sucked major ass if you ask me, it was like a Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson album run together. His worst album to date.

Noise Noise was not on I Assassin, it was releaed on the remaster. Originaly it's a B-Side to a single. White Boys and Heroes I think.

  • it was a B side? thats a shame, it was a really good song. white boys and heroes was great... but the video, wasnt it just cringeworthy?

his worse album to date? isnt that a bit much? what about machine and soul? that blew...

  • yeah it was either White Boys and Heroes or We Take Mystery To Bed, i can't remember, been forever since I had that album lol

Machine + Soul was dissapointing, but I liked it better than Pure. Pure is just not the Numan that I know. The Numan I know is'nt all depressed and complaining about problems in every song. Jagged was an ok album, alot better than Pure, but I wish he'd go back and do another album like The Fury, that one goes down as one of my favriotes.

  • because the fury didnt belong anywhere, and it wont belong anywhere now either. the fury sold really poorly. plus he clearly didnt enjoy making it.

he enjoys making the industrial music now, why cant you let him be happy? why do you always have to say rude things about him? why do you always kick his daughters when they are at school? why are you always drawing nasty pictures of him? why are you always inviting him to parties that dont exist just to waste his time? youre so rude!

  • What are you talking about. We are all entitled to our opinions. You obviously like the new albums and so does gary, but just because we don't doesn't make us numan-haters.

All that is being said here is that gary numan has radically changed his style in recent years, and some fans dont like it... Including me i might dare to add

  • The b-side of Music For Chameleons.

  • "pure punk"?

IT wasnt "punk" to start with, it was new-romantic at the start! lol

  • nope, it was new wave/darkwave, something enterily different

  • wordsworths creating new terminology all the time. I can verbal masturbate too i suppose.

    I call it new darkwaveromanticism

  • Gary began his music a few years before the "new romantic scene" - but was probably influencial to them. There's an interview on Youtube some where I watched where he actually said that. He was greatly influenced by John Foxx - of Ultravox.

  • still love this song so much!

  • Jo the waiter held me close

    Behind the door marked `gentlemen'

Just for now that's all I need

    Won't someone call me `friend'?

  • i dont meen to be rude, but listen to all the lyrics, u aint a numan fan, u have no clue why we have been following him for 30 odd years, one of the best song writers ever, inact your two bob comment is starting to upset me, best u go and learn, fucking mug

  • He's great live it seems! I wanna see him live!

  • one of the best numan songs and accoustic well done gazza and cheers for posting fabric

  • this is BRILLIANT. Sorry Gary...nothing will beat this. Your friend..Leed.

  • Love it Loveit Love it! Thanks. He's great can't wait for tour x

  • yeah i agree song with such a passion, hes still amazing.

  • This song is so wonderful. Thanks so much for posting.

  • One of his least popular/famous songs and one of his best. Gorgeous.

  • Numan still has that passion in his songs as he did 20 years ago!

Enjoying singing a song that started his career!

    Coxynuma.66.

  • What a beautiful man he is. sigh.

  • This is a brilliant version of a brilliant song ..........THANX

  • Fragment 2-04.. It was filmed at the Shepherds Bush Empire in London in September 2004..

  • @fabric20 ..the guitarist at 1:40 looks like Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver..i love this song!

  • That's bloddy great! Which dvd is it from?
