my ar drone fly away 1 mile and 19 feet cause i flew it over my car went up over my dads car then went over these trees then over a tall building and then over electric lines. it was just a dot in the sky and on my camera u could see were the image was and then it stopped and the drone came flying down we found it 1 mile and 19 feet away from my house it was insane

The only advantage I can think of is the video recording/photo taking capabilities. If it can only travel 30 or 40ft away....whats the point? If I could fly one 100 yards away then I might get one. But 30-40ft? no point.

If it uses 2.4ghz or 5ghz wireless to connect and control it, then line of sight shouldn't be an issue, right? The things to worry about would be the range of the signal and what is actually in between the plane and the controller if you don't have line of sight. Like if you fly it behind a large metal object, then controls would suffer because the signal wouldn't pass through, but flying it behind something that doesn't reflect the radio waves, the signal should be fine, technically.
