  • Lotus Elise is 1.8cc VVT Toyota Corolla RunX Engine!!!!

    180bhp

  • They should start using the Honda S2000 engine in Elise's. That would be awesome!

  • it can have spikes in the seats for all i care, the seats can be made from garbage bags and old socks for all i care but when i see the car and when i idrive it i simply wont care.

  • ''can u see the smile on my face?'' = facepalm

  • the engine on the 2002-present Lotus Elise

    Engine

    1.8 L Rover K-Series I4

    1.8 L Toyota 1ZZ-FE I4

    1.8 L Toyota 2ZZ-GE I4

  • WONDERS what a Corolla engine can do rather than being blunt and dull grandma carriers :O

  • i wanna see what this car could do with a subaru flat-4 in it with the higher torque and lower center of gravity.

  • @uummmnocoolnames would love to see the ajp straight six powering an elise. An awesome combination.

  • I raced one on the highway with my 300c srt8 , i won by a half a car length ;)

  • "This maybe.. the most fun I've ever had with my clothes on!" (3:35-3:37)

  • You might not get it. But you owe it to yourself to drive one. Then you'll get it.

It will spoil you for anything else.

From an Elise owner of two-and-a-half years. Every day.

"Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away."

  • What canyons do you guys drive on??

  • how the hell does this thing have a corola engine and does 4.3 when the damn corola does 6.5+!?!?

  • Unlike most sports cars, this puts emphasis on lightness and maneuverability rather than power. Which is what makes it fun.

  • I drove one yesterday! it was incredibly fun!

  • Okay, the engine for the Elise is in the back while the Evora and Exige have it in the front?

  • I drove this car before, and it was the most fun I've ever had. It's not a powerful engine, but it accelerates fast and has perfect handling.

  • I would love to imagine how this car would be if it came with a Subaru Boxer engine in it... That would be Nice!!

  • hey everyday driver its the last gen celica engine not corolla engine, and your guys job is2know cars? BWAAAAAA HAAAAAAA

  • @891trigfoot - You'll note that the video review (:30) mentions the Celica engine. Obviously, the Celica isn't made anymore. When another poster mentioned the current Camry as the source, we mentioned the Corolla for a current car (but less correct) reference and that's obviously caused more confusion. Our apologies. The video itself is correct.

  • and 4age passes emissions fine, my 86mr2 has 4age and i beat new lotuses constantly.get that crappy last gen celica engine out of lotus and put something better in that is better quality and more potential for power, ex. mr2 engines, 4age and 3sgte.stupid kid don't know shit.

  • no, actually 4age and 3sgte way lighter than 2zz idiot. 4age 1.6 litre, 3age 2 litre, 2zz 2.4litre, hmmm i wonder which is bigger and heavier? plus 4age revs higher and makes more power than 2zz and i've seen boosted 3sgte pushing 700hp with no problems.why don't people build 2zz engine cause they blow up, worst engine toyota ever built.lol

  • i saw 2 of these today around town. one was blue and the other was lime green

  • I want!

  • What a hot name :-)

  • why waste your money. the new dodge caravan sport is just as fast and handles awesome. i bet the caravan sport runs 12s in the 1/4 stock, easy.

  • @heroicwaffles did you just compare a lotus elise to a DODGE CARAVAN?... what do you mean "why waste your money?" its a lotus, it handles i bet 40 times better than a caravan. people buy this car for bringing it to the track and taking turns with it, not carrying thier kids to soccer practice. you my friend, are a moron.

  • @000ADRush i can out corner ANY car, OUT ACCELERATE and i have plenty of room and my dodge caravan looks sexy as fuck.

  • @heroicwaffles WHAT? have you gone to the track and raced a lotus elise before, corners and straights? and you won? if so, your a lieng dirtbag. your mom bought you a caravan, doesnt mean its fast. a newer model of the lotus elise does 0-60 in 4 something seconds and autoweek recently said the caravan does it in like 7 (dont remember exact numbers) i dont think you have out accelarated either. if you have out turned or out accelerated an elise, the driver must have been drunk.. or dead.

  • @000ADRush no way man. if you actually went to a drag strip you would see that the dodge caravan sport fucking wins everything. so if you were smart you would sell that slow piece of shit lotus and buy a dodge caravan sport. does lotus have sport in its name???? no! a dodge caravan is a badass sports car

  • @heroicwaffles just because a car has sport in its name doesnt mean its a sports car. name one ferrari with sport in its name. or any other super car for that matter. im aware the a caravan is a fast MINIVAN. but its still not gonna take corners anywhere near as fast as a lotus does. people buy lotuses for the turns. if they buy it for a straight line, they buy the super charged one. which could smoke a caravan. you sound like an idiot just by your stupid ass "sport in its name" comment.

  • Thats Stephane's car, from midnight club

  • You guys should get the 260 cup version with the supercharger, I saw a video of that blowing away an atom on the track. Unreal

  • they really should have put 3s gte or 4age, or 4agze engine in this instead of 2zz ge, i hear celica engine pretty unreliable and can't handle much boost, if your into turbo charging

  • @891trigfoot Those are HEAVY engines and dont meet up with emissions requirements.

  • you guys should put this against old mr2's, see which handlers better, i bet mk1 mr2 would beat it, in handling i mean

  • The Elise/Exige is one of the only cars I could replace my S2000 with and not feel cheated.

  • @glock19x300

    me too!

  • its just a right car !

  • "this may be the most fun im ever gonna have.....with my clothes on" hhahaha

  • Is it just me, or do these guys seem to watch Top Gear and then just copy everything they say? I've noticed the similarities in a few of their reviews so far.

  • seriously considering trading in my late model BMW Z3 straight six for one of these in the very near future :)

  • @lemarsman1

I'm pretty sure he means that's who his dad is insured by. DEDEDE!!!!!

  • I'm sold guys! I'm gonna put a gem like this in my garage with my Prowler!

  • This car is the cheapest exotic car and even can out perform corvettes on tracks! I have a freind who owns this and gets lots of attention!

  • This car uses a Toyota Camry engine in the U.S. so this car gets good mileage and its also one of the most reliable sports cars on the market.

  • @sadmancho - It's actually the EVORA that has the Camry engine. The Elise has the Corolla 4cylinder.

But you're right... the result is MPG and reliability better than most dedicated sports cars.

  • @EverydayDriver I thought it was the celica GT-S engine...

EDIT: Guess the corolla used a form of the Toyota ZZ engine as well.

  • @EverydayDriver

Sorry, you're both wrong. It's the 2ZZ-GE motor, tuned by Yamaha specifically for the Celica GTS, Lotus changes the ECU intake and exhaust. The only Corollas that had that engine were factory tuner versions like the XRS which delivered 170hp vs. Lotus config of 190hp. Matrix also used it. Toyota's killing this mill helped kill the Elise which is finishing its run this year.

  • @EverydayDriver it's actually a Celica/Vibe engine in the elise. The Toyota 2ZZGE.

  • @EverydayDriver actually the celica gts motor. the 2zz. notice the 8k-something redline.

  • @gioluevano The 2zz was used in the Corolla XR-S I believe, so Everyday Driver is still technically correct.

  • @EverydayDriver this uses the Celica engine.

  • @1HGClark - Yes, you are correct. You'll note that the video review itself (:30) mentions the Celica engine as the source for the Elise. Obviously, the Celica isn't made anymore. We mentioned the Corolla for a current car (but less correct) reference and that's obviously caused more confusion. Our apologies, we shouldn't have done that. The Celica engine is the best answer and if you've watched the video you've probably seen that mentioned.

  • @sadmancho the video says the engines comes from a Toyota Celica! where did the camry came from?? lol 2ZZGE!!!

  • Hell yea, there's my first car.

  • earplugs - really with standard exhaust. Cmon, grow up :o)

  • are these cheap to insure?

  • Cool!

  • no comment sur la couleur :))

  • Challenge accepted: Ariel Atom!!

  • I was surprised with the nitpicking concerning the interior. If you're looking at the interior in an elise you're driving it wrong! Haha. I love that car, I've actually driven one, and I'm 18. (A family friend owns one) and it's absolutely unreal. I love this car. Great review! Just stop worrying about that interior. :)

  • im going to be 16, my dad is with state farm, and i want this for my first car, im going to put down 8k down payment and i plan to pay 22k on a lotus elise (i found one that cheap) so itll b like 311 dollars a month for car payments plus 100 in gas a month, how much will insurance be, im in illinois, im 16, im a male, i dont drive to to much when i get it, how much a month please answer

  • @69XSkater ask ur dad, u just said he was with state farm. dedede

  • @69XSkater why would you get an elise as a first car? unless you're loaded and ready to get another one when you crash it doesnt sound too smart. Get something cheap that you can knock around a bit until you're competent wenough for something like the elise.

  • Omfg i want a lotus. but i'm 16 and when i crash i would like not to die.

  • I've just bought one!!!

  • It looks like a girl's car? You must be joking

  • Im glad my dad bought this car 2 years ago, its hottt, and i live in Bunn, NC, not sum heavily populated city, I love it! :D

  • i wish it was a proper coupe. it looks like a girls car or a showcar with the roof off.

  • You don't need 400bhp in an Elise, it would just spoil the balance of the car. Sure it would accelerate faster, and you could have fun watching the clouds of tyre smoke from the rear when you floored it in the lower gears, but if you want to do that, just buy a Dodge Viper.

  • humming bird in a world of owls

  • i love the last thing he says.

  • My dream car and i think is the sexiest car on the planet

  • @stitchmorg That's the thing, when I get a used one,( I saw a dealer selling one with 14k miles and it cost 34k dollars ) everyone will think i am spoiled and paid a fortune, truth is, a use ferrari is just the same price as a new bmw. People are just too lazy to look for used good cars ;)

  • I am getting one of these

  • I got one of these when i was 19. Thank god for finance companies. Its funny because everyone thought i was a bigshot. In reality i was paying 450 a month for it! wasnt brand new but good enough!

didnt hold its value for resale though, thats for damn sure

  • One reason I love this car is Elise is my name.

  • ok.. i can buy a honda civic and do a k20 swap, gut it out, do some light suspension mod sand end up with a 30K car that is equal to the elise... cept a bit uglier... i think ill just gut my cobra.. and throw on a blower

  • @xmodrock It would not be equal to the elise. It will still be front wheel drive and not nearly as beautiful. A tuned up civic will never be the drivers car that is the lotus elise and thats a fact my friend.

  • @BlueAvenue22 a tuned up IRS 04 cobra would be way better than a lotus to me

  • @xmodrock Better is subjective in this case. For drag racing Id take the stang but autoX/circuit racing I think the elise would dominate.

  • @BlueAvenue22 lol ill take most cars over the elise...

  • The yank calls it a motor, but it really is an engine. Most americans don't appreciate a car like this, because they are obese. I own an 08 model.

  • @Tophairybutt I like the motor in this car because it's sourced from a Toyota. Citizens who aren't subjects of the crown and who live in a Superpower can call it whatever we like, and this Elise looks like it moves out the brits at Dunkirk.

  • a need for speed

  • what will i be missing out on on this car as far as amenities, does it have a CD player, or did they rip that off for adding a couple ounces ?

  • Anyone know how much insurance is please

  • Fantastic car. Nothing compares to the feeling you get. People can keep their Audi S lines and Mercedes AMG. Next on the list the big brother...the exige.

  • i drive one every day and love it more every time i put it into gear

  • its perfect. . .

  • good job

are you going to review the new Lotus Elise (2010) soon?

  • crossing double yellows not cool

  • im pretty sure the word phenomenon has already been invented

  • I love all of your guy's reviews. How do i get a job like that? Driving all my dream cars and being able to talk about them and what not. Keep it up guys, your livin the dream haha

  • i really like the styling and body of this car.sounds good and everything.plus 48mpg that's awesome

  • They forgot to mention it's very fuel economy too.....

  • The lotus elise is like a hummingbird, in a world full of owls.

  • why are all these online shows better than american top gear?

  • Rented one of these for 24 hours & 200 miles, drove the desert around Vegas / Lake Mead and cruised the strip a bit. I have always liked quick, small, light cars, and this just knocked my socks off... tackles a two-lane road at 2x the limit with ease. Exhaust sound is raucous but intoxicating, cruising the streets you can play it like an intstrument. Get one of these for fun and a used minivan for daily practical driving if you have responsibilities, and laugh when gas hits $5 a gal again!

  • @3:35 Did he just said what i think he said ?

  • 2005 Elise with the sport suspension, touring and hard top. Bought 5 years ago, have 60k on the odometer and here is the kicker: I am just as happy at 5 years driving the car as I was the day I bought it. I can't think of any other car I have ever owned or driven that gives me the same giddy feeling even after a year or two, nevermind 5! Mid-30's for gas mileage, (high 20's if you stay in the cam), low insurance, DIY maintenance, it's also the 2nd cheapest car I've owned (Miata is the 1st).

  • @Adventuremyk1 I heard the servicing is expensive though? Is that true?

  • @PfeifferDubstep Not at all. My wife's '07 Civic Si costs more. Oil changes are $36 at the local Toyota dealer (or $450 for exactly the same oil change at a Lotus dealer). Plugs are $3 each, air filter is $9. If you stay with the Yokohama A048's they will eat you out of house and home every 3,000 miles. Kuhmo Ecsta's work 90% as well, actually work in rain (park the A048's), smoother break at the limit, and all 4 for the price of one rear A048. :) If you want expensive maint, get a Jeep!

  • @Adventuremyk1 Really wow. I was interested in buying the elise, but since I live in Maryland and the weather gets pretty bad here I am torn between the new Lancer evo mr and the elise. I know they are two different cars but just something about the elise really catches my eye. Do you live in a warm weather state? If not, how does the elise act in the winter? I also assume the elise is your secondary car right? Thanks for your help!

  • @PfeifferDubstep Oddly the '99 Wrangler is the secondary car and it's the one that costs a fortune to keep on the roads! I live in east TN (Knoxville) where we have had more iff-weather this year than ever before. As long as you are running decent tires it is not an issue. The only time the Jeep got taken was in the very icy days. the Evo MR is an excellent car and I'd enjoy having one as well, yet the Elise fits me like a glove. At 6'2 and a 34" waist the seats feel custom fit. :)

  • @Adventuremyk1 I'm gonna have to test drive one! If only there was a lotus dealership around here haha.

  • dime or penny? with this thing you can probably detect the year it was minted!

  • this is like the anti-corvette. Pretty much the opposite approach to a sports car, but I love them both. Corvette wins on raw performance, daily driveability, and maintenance costs (at least here in the US, although with the Toyota engine, maybe not by much) but Elise wins for uniqueness, character and probably "funness." Would be a tough call with the similar price for base 'vette vs base Elise.

  • Look like "batmobile"..

  • "I dare you to find a car that handles better then the elise"

    - The Exige.

  • @phantomloita nice

  • keep in mind this is really a track car made for curves

  • @skillz139 infact, elise is not a track car, its just one small car and thats it

  • how much is this car?

  • @ladyxpink1826 depends on where you live. In the UK they start at £24,000 but a hard top option is useful for the winter. I bought the test drive car (only a month old) so got some discount.

  • "this may be the most fun ive ever had, with my clothes on" lol

  • Comment removed

  • Had an '05 and sold it a couple of years ago...BIG mistake! I miss my Elise SO much. No other car like it. Lotus cars are something special.

  • I want one.

  • I like the interior for some reason :P

  • Rice cars.. why? cuz theyre all cosmetic and no goo... Hahahaha!!

  • did anyone catch how he says at the end "this may be the most fun i've ever had with my clothes on?" :-D

  • everyone who use this car as a daily driver say it's great.

I cant wait to get mine!

  • "This must be the funnest thing I've done with clothes on" now that was funny.

  • the elise is one of the greatest drivers cars ever

  • tatiana sagapaw

  • Id rather not drive this car. I mean yeah its good for what it is, but its not even a everyday drivable car, look how small that trunk is? Porsche 911 Turbo are still a bargain at $130,000 compared to a Ferrari F430, or Lamborghini Gallardo. But I'd take a Corvette over any car, when it comes in the name of practicallity.

  • no power steering? lol

  • wonder what the unsurance on that is like

  • @ 6'1, would i fit?

I've heard you can get 400hp out of this car. Is this from the standard motor or an engine swap?

  • @nakedluck11 - Both Paul and Todd are 6'3", so yes, you should be able to fit in the Elise.

400Hp is not likely. It's a 1.8liter 4cyl engine so that would either involve serious turbos or an engine swap. Supercharged or turboed to about 260hp is very possible. Remember this is only a 2000lb car - that's a lot of power for something so light.

  • @EverydayDriver - That's nice to know, i'm 6'3'' myself ! Thanks for these amazing videos. Your expectations towards cars are exactly the same as mine, i can totally relate.

  • @EverydayDriver

Hey, I'm 15 and very serious about being a car reviewer..

What are the qualifications needed to get a job like this...

  • @EverydayDriver@ ...Ayrton Senna's F1 car had 1.5 Liter engines with turbos and putting out 950HP and that was in the 80's

1.8 l 400HP with pump gas is hardly difficult these days.

  • @EverydayDriver

6-3? you look like your 5-8 or something there...is that 6-3 with kicks?

  • @EverydayDriver they might have gropped an evora engine in it if it runs 400 hp

  • @EverydayDriver in 1986 BMW 4 cylinder (turbo) at 1300hp but non-turbo who knows I'd say at least 400hp.

  • @nakedluck11 With that amount of ponies you should star calling a mechanic to work on the transmission.

  • @nakedluck11 I asked some other lotus owners and you can get 400hp out of this engine. The transmission has problems with anything over the 400 mark. I'd go with the k20/24 swap for the extra cc's

  • @nakedluck11 i wouldnt do that if i were u, do u know what will happen to the tires when i give that much power to a go kart?

yes it would spin... and crash into a tree

  • @nakedluck11 I'm 6'4" and couldn't get my legs underneath the dashboard, and my head is looking above the windshield with the top off. With the top on I looked like Quasimodo.

I would not get this car if you're over 6' or so---it will be OK and first, but you'll end up being miserable.

  • @nakedluck11 probably. i'm 6'10" and drove with my friend (the owner) from MN to CA.

  • @nakedluck11 I am 6'2 and have fit just fine. I can still clear the hard top when wearing a helmet for autocrosses. Two owners I know are 6'6 and still fit. It has more interior room than most convertible 2seaters.

Frankly, there isn't any need for 400hp though a few have managed to get it. 300hp seems to be a sweet spot. Remember, at 1,950lbs 300hp is like the average 3,600lb 'sports cars' 600hp. Less mass requires less power. That's the point of these cars. :)

  • @nakedluck11 I'm 6'1" and wear a 48' jacket. Test drove the Elise three weeks ago. Plenty of leg room and head clearance. Sat next to somebody of similar stature to me, I'd probably be rubbing shoulders, but that's all. Just ordered one. Can't wait!!!

  • @nakedluck11 Yeah I've seen people get as much as 425bhp but it's not CARB legal and sounds like giant flaming hornets nest.

  • Can someone help me im getting my first car and idk which to choose the lotus or s2000?

  • @LadyDiamond33 for a first car?.....neither honestly, get something that's sporty sure but don't buy a full on purpose built sports car for your first and ONLY car. It's just not a wise move at all, especially if you have little driving experience in these types of cars. I'd suggest a hot hatch instead which will give you the great feeling & the daily performance. If you absolutely HAVE to pick one then the S2000 is smarter for daily use in my experience.

    Kei

  • @Kamukix Thank you :] yeah i decided to go with the s2000

  • If I was to make a getaway car, this is an obvious choice.

  • @dacbiet lol, except that when a car looks like this they don't have to chase you. That's why you never see/hear about real getaway's in Ferrari's, Lamborghini's, and such. There is no need to chase you because there are only a few of them in the area anyway, so it's super easy to know who did what, and where they are. They'll just meet you at home or the fill station. Also never forget, unless you travel faster than sound (aka radio) you will still lose in the end. ;)

    Kei

  • great review guys....what a value for a true pure sports car!

  • I swear the Lotus was not built for tall guys. I wanted one, but I couldn't fit.

  • Ugly, to much money!

    go with an s2000

  • @Footballfanafc ...lotus ugly.. are u f**ken kidding me.. s2k is butt ugly.. no curves no nothing

  • That lotus or a Honda S2000?? What do you recommend?

  • @tommyjones1978 - Hey, Todd here... If I had the option of this or the Lotus I would pick the Lotus. Both are great cars (S2000 is cheaper to get into) but the Lotus is Faster, More Agile, and More Interesting.

S2000 has a better interior, but usable space and trunk is about the same.

  • @EverydayDriver many thanks!! ;)

  • Try low 30's/High 20's is bottom of the barrel for a used one.

  • The only car i would possibly give up my s2000 for. I was faced with the decision between them both but since i needed it as a daily driver...there was no contest. While having inferior overall specs the s2000 was the best fun i could find short of the elise. Its still the most fun car you could possible drive under 40k.

  • I want

  • rather pick up S2k than this...a bit pricy!!

  • great review. thanks, guys.

  • it cost about 60,000 USD i Norway , but i want one ^^

  • 45,000!! It's not to bad for an awesome car like this!
