man those 2 people who disiked this song.... i mean your intitled to your own opinion but i think you seriously need to rethink your taste in music. I'm a Deathmetal freak and even i love concrete blonde so i seriously think you need to stop and think a minute just saying
I'd never heard of Concrete Blonde until they opened for Cyndi Lauper for the True Colors tour. Their entire set was spetacular. Opening bands have rarely impressed me, but their live performance made me go buy the casette the next day. This is one my faves by them.
My take on Johnette's voice is simple: the best I've heard. Ironically, I'm from the Joplin generation. Janis was a wailer. Scream your guts out and go for broke. People forget that she had a killer band behind her which helped a ton. But for sheer raw beauty, clarity and power with words, Johnette wins my heart every time I hear her. I once sent her an email--telling her what Im saying now and to my sheer glee, she wrote back and thanked me. She's class and art. Beautiful song.
The thing they had in common.....They both operate with PURE UNADULTERATED EMOTION! Johnette is far more talented in my opinion yes. Did you ever try to sing and play bass at the same time! ? I HAVE ITS HARDER THAN HELL!
it is rather difficult... most people don't realize it's harder than playing guitar & singing. I often have to explain why... theoretically, it should be easier with bass since there's usually only 1 note at a time, but it's easier to just strum chords on a guitar than to try to play some tricky rhythm on bass! I also agree on the emotion part :)
Johnette is not only one of the greatest female rock singer of all times, bringing out so much emotion in every sentence, but also a very underrated lyricist. Her words are just beautiful ! I'm glad I saw CB live three times, it was pure beauty !
Janis Jopin Well it was another era. They were both women, thats all they have in common !
Love this band.....will always be thankful to a friend of mine many years ago for turning me on to Concrete Blond......I love this song....thanks Diana where ever you are.........Brian
Thanks for posting-this is awesome! I've said it before and I'll say it again - I don't understand why people don't talk about Jim Mankey being one of the best guitarists in rock music! This song shows it better than almost any other Concrete Blonde song.
I am a distance runner, and I always have to blast this just before taking off on a really long run, just gets you going, becuae a 20 mile run is dancing on the edge...
I forgot all about this song till a min. ago...funny thing is it's one of my very favorite songs ever..lol Thanks for the gr8 moment , loved hearing it again..have to look for the cd...bye
To me this song is a metaphor of their success. They stepped right to the edge of huge fame and took a half step back. I love playin' their stuff in my car and my passengers say, "whoa, who is this?"
Man I remember playing this album for the first time, back then in the late eighties. It was something refreshing, to hear a sound that reminiscent of the early L.A. punk movement, with a eighties twice to it. I was getting bored and tired of being bombarded by the British stuff and American Retro glam rock band from L.A. Here was a something that was ultra-cool.
I somehow missed this song when I went through my original Concrete Blonde phase, but that oversight has since been corrected...primarily due to this particular upload.
Thanks. I love this song. It's one of the few that stay on my ipod no matter what.
Johnette is undoubtably one of, if not THE, greatest female voices in rock. As below, hell she and Janis Joplin should even be mentioned in the same breath. Don't get me wrong, Janis paved the way for the gals and I respect her for that, but she really just didn't have a good voice.
@HGbunny I am not even going to put Johnette anywhere down to the level where that joplin gal is buried. And I am not 'getting' you wrong, I am telling you, that you ARE wrong. She only paved the way to her own grave, and strung a bunch of LSD "flashbacks" to tell about it. And if you wish to respect that, feel free. Screw all the "tip toeing around the bush, and being nice about it all". She couldn't sing to save her own sorry ass Life. Literally! She's Dead! Dirty red bandanna and all.
@HGbunny i completely agree with you on that. johnette napolitano is indeed one of the greatest if not THE greatest rock chick there ever was. a very dark and gorgeous front for l.a. rock. i never did like janis joplin.
@crissum Thanks for your opinion, friend! :-) I think I agreed w/what you're saying at the end of my comment. I by no means was ever a Janis fan. I quit bands that wanted me to cover her. I realize there may be a misunderstanding because at one point I typo'ed "should," instead of, "shouldn't (even be mentioned in the the same breath...)" My only positive was that she paved the way for women to follow. Since we have the same opinion of her, I hope you don't think we're BOTH idiots! Much love!
used to watch concrete blonde at the green door in clairmonte or montclaire(cant really remember which cuz of all the fun chemicals) in the early 80' with my friend deano and daryl thanks for posting
Yes, think it was Montclaire. I, too, use to hang out there as well as Madame Wong's and the Whiskey. Was good friends with members of Disarray, opened frequently for Concrete Blonde. Fun times, great memories.
Johnette Napolitano's voice is the best I've ever heard in rock music. That's a bold statement but the way she fashions a song and then performs it is unpararelled. I told her this too. I love this song. .and the album that it came off. Thanks for posting this.

what a voice... this song talks about how we struggle and deal with vulnerability. some with bravery others cowardly. this piece is about the latter.

The guitar melody starting at about 3:12 reminded me of something... seems it's a nod to Fleetwood Mac's "Rhiannon".
