I have a real question from a long time VU/Lou fan..... Why would this song offend a black person? I have listened to it many times and havent heard anything that I think would be offensive.... Again, Im asking the question honestly and not trying to still up shit or flame anything..... Frank
That has to be Bruce Springsteen doing the first part of slip away isn't it? I'd forgotten about Lou's masterpiece for at least 20 years...along with a time in my life when this song was too relevant. A complex, deep, dark view of life best forgotten...
Street Hassle was the first rock and roll album I ever bought. I just thought Lou looked cool on the cover, I didn't know anything about it. This album will always have special meaning for me.
For 9 minutes, this song is lyrically, standard Lou Reed shit. Prostitutes, sex, drug dealers, death, etc etc.
The last two minutes, however, are probably the most touching and genuine lyrics he's ever written. I don't think I've ever heard Lou Reed sound so human.
this is the song they put on the album in order to sell all the other songs on it, without street hassle the album is utter pants. and i say that as a huge lou and velvets fan.
Street Hassle was the album that put me off Lou Reed for years - it introduced the horrible, warbling, shakey voice he started to sing with (for god knows what reason). He didn't sing properly again till the title track of New Sensations. A pity, as it just ruined so many good songs from that time. Of course, nowadays, his "singing" is just so outrageously disgusting that I don't even follow his album releases in the slightest.
..Beautiful, Tragic, Brilliant and Timeless...........- A Master's Masterpiece- That riff is like breathing........it also reminds you how cool Bruce Springsteen was (and is)- to be hanging out with Lou and given a cameo that fits so perfectly. Thanks for posting.............
I thought I was the only person that liked this record (the whole thing is excellent). I remember in the late seventies my punk rock neighbors dug it the most. Thanks for posting.
I almost got my ass kicked by a room full of angry black people for playing this song on the jukebox...Honestly...I'd do it all over again. This is a brilliant song.
@Feadpool2112 I have loved the song since it first came out. My best friend was the Bowie fan, and I the Lou Reed. The dark, brooding undertones of this little symphony always touched a base nerve. "Hey, man, that's just a lie...." My favorite passage from this sone.
@Feadpool2112 Hahaha. I've played this in the company of friends many a time and none have managed to get to six minutes without having to coerce me to turn it off. It seems this song makes most people want to slit their wrists or at least have their ears blocked with cement, but it's one of my favourite songs of all time. The lyrics are fucking spectacular.
@Feadpool2112 I`m a black dude and I love me some Lou Reed. I have this on cassette somewhere in my house. I just couldn`t get this song out of my head all week. I haven`t heard it in years. Maybe not even this century. It`s been in my head even though I haven`t heard it in a while. So I just had to check it out. I guess I was craving this song.If Iwas in the room when you played this I would have complimented you on your taste in music.
Without a doubt one of Lous best. This is the song that did it for me-after hearing it I was a fan for life. But does Bruce Springsteen get any credit for this at all? I dont remembering him being mentioned on the album.
@revolution7153 Bruce was on a different label but "Darkness on the Edge of Town" and "Street Hassle" were recorded at the same studio. Prob. just one of those "in the hallway" things. Also, Clive Davis had just started Arista which was Lou's label by this time, and he had signed Springsteen to Columbia in '73.
still not famous like the Bolero 'sof Ravel...it's only a time matter..louis a genious, his time is not as the our one....magic of the music....i humbly presume, thumb up,anyway!
@karakorak maybe it's couse of to drink the coke is ,may7be,the thing the entire mankind do more, more than to fuck, more than to look at a sunset..then..it's the man(kind) representing itself, not bad as example, don't you think??? or,i'm only a mad, excuse me,in the case......
lou's greatest song... and one of the all time greats ...no other song sounds like this ...and that classic line "why dont ya grab ya old lady by the feet....and ....brilliant...
I have no idea why, but I just hear this song and the lyrics and the tune and the meaning, and it speaks to me. In a way not many other songs do, in a way where when I listen to it every time I just want to weep. Absolutely..just..fantastic.
Bruce Springsteen's bit gets me every time; "Well hey(man), that's just a lie, It's a lie she tells her friends. 'cause the real song, the real song Where she won't even admit to herself The beatin' in her heart. It's a song lots of people know. It's a painful song A little sad truth But life full of sad songs Penny for a wish But wishin' won't make you a soldier. With a pretty kiss for a pretty face Can't have it's way Y'know tramps like us, we were born to pay."
To be honest I'm not a big fan of Warhol, but that's just my sense of taste rather than a failing in Warhol's sense of aesthetics (which I suspect has been to some extent inspired by Leni Riefenstahl, who's work is the product of a genius).
@digitalbananajam ...and why don't we slip away has inserted itself into how I hear things...it's a universal truth, man, some people...glory, glory, glory...I feel so good listening to this, every time...it's like there is never a second time, it's always fresh, always new...took the rings of my fingers, and there's nothing left to say
jajaja los pasan besando tomando una Coca la botella que diseño el Andy Warhol o comiendo todo en serie y de de la vida en ciudad, de los padres del arte pop...
