American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown are actually socially relevant albums. Because it doesn't conform to your punk purist attitude is no reason to hate on them. Punk is still alive and well thanks to Green Day.

Well I was actually part of the punk scene in 1984 until 1989 and although there were punk bands around and gigs too, if you were a punk around that time you got a lot of stick from none punks. and punks were a very small minority back then.

American Idiot is a song done in the age of commercial bands and Green Day are a bit cought in the commercialism. I adore Green Day and i think American Idiot is a masterpiece but it's nowhere near Bascet case. Back when this song was made the number of commercialised bands was at minimum and that was a time when Punk and Rock were PUnk and Rock not now when u cant spot the fakers because of the commercialisation. But Green Day are no fakers by any means
