Almovodar's inclusion of this song is a fantastic outlay of the dynamic between the main actor and his love--he is the dove. The allusion to the song may be a little overwrought, insofar that he's crying during the song and the song is about a man/dove crying over lost love, but it sets up his heartbreak well.  And, then, there's the song! One of the greatest of all songs--how beautiful is that???!!!
