I've watched Mangini's videos since the firsts on the internet..but now we have the Portnoy's bitches hating them. Don't get me wrong, I like Portnoy since I was 8 back on 1990. I didn't even know that I would like DT for over 20years.I don't see the point of compare this two monsters. They are both high skilled drummers AND musicians.
>IMHO, most people can't understand neither appreciate the musicality of Mangini's solos, they just expect the aggressive Portnoy's style. For these, GTFO!
Mangini is so multi-talented, as is Portnoy. Well, Portnoy is continuing on with other projects which I am sure will be awesome, and I will be following. Dream Theater now has Mangini, and FOR SURE I will be following what happens there. I think it's win-win for everyone involved -- it's like some folks don't seem to realize, hey, you CAN still love and follow what Portnoy is doing, AND look forward to Dream Theater's future as well. They are different paths now, but both will carry on.
@pantalaemon I was actually searching for my previous comment on this video. I know what I said was wrong, but what I meant is that Mangini really isn't the type of drummer that Mike Portnoy is. To me, anyway. Mangini is way up there.. Mike Portnoy as well, but he's not even close in technical proficiency. I just wish Mangini would find a band that could exploit all of his skills - the polyrhythms, the feel, the dynamics, everything.
@nengstro Oh my goodness!! Haha. I've never seen this one. Amazing stuff! I'm so excited that he is now the drummer in Dream Theater. It'll be great to hear what he adds to the music! I think he listens very carefully to what's going on around him, (like he did during the audition, which JR mentioned), and I'm hoping he'll be able to add some really cool stuff to DT's sound.
Sorry, look at the posted videos, Mike can do any thing Gadd and Colaiuta can. Weckl has the upperhand thought when it comes to jazz-latin-fusion improvisation, no beats him at that. But Mikes still no one, with weckl as a close no two. And Lang, and Tony Royster...And check out Dylan Elise!
Given all the new up and coming drummers who masters all styles and speeds, Gadd and Colaiuta are - sadly - left behind. 20 odd years ago they were the best, now is not then....
@nengstro He CANNOT do what Gadd or Colaiuta do...he doesn't even play with a swing feel - gadd incorporates rudiments into all of his beats and plays with a subtly and feel that this guy does not have at all - they have two completely different styles lol
menuda mierda...esperemos que no haga eso en DT

@wertyguitar Maybe. We will see. Mangini is pretty good. But i think that Aquiles Priester could be another possibility.
carl13220 1 year ago
@carl13220 Mangini isn't a straight sixteenth note guy. I don't think DT is the kind of band for him, tbh.

DRUM LEGEND! Mike Mangini
frazordelta 2 years ago 5
or those who think Mike is all speed:
watch?v=y66NbnVyBmk-- An orchestral snare solo from Cirones Portraits in Rhythm to a metronome to help his Berklee students.
watch?v=xxS_63IuK_E-- Improvising with Jesus Diaz in Afro-Cuban and Rock settings.
watch?v=zTruMiQKTyE-- Clinic footage Brushes and SLOW fills, then some hand speed for fans
He plays many more styles WELL than the UNINFORMED armchair critics seem to think. Makes sense, given that he is a professor at Berklee.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
absolute crap. this guy plays the same way every time I hear him. the most overrated drummer of all time.

hes playing to an already written thrash metal song, you will never hear the versatility of mike mangini from youtube videos alone.
SiCmetalfan 2 years ago
So? All I know is that I CAN see the versatility of ANY Weckl, Gadd, Colaiuta etc video on youtube and it will blow this crap away.
