I just love Martina, she played an intelligent tennis and mastered the racquet and the ball, she could direct the ball anyway and anywhere she wanted.

Hingis was a smart, talented player, but she could not beat the strongest players in their primes (Serena, Venus, Lindsay Davenport). (Remember that Serena was not yet 20 in this 2001 match and not yet at her best--Martina's game matured faster. This was the last win for Martina--Serena won the last three matches they played.)
And even for a smaller girl Hingis had a bad serve--the second serve especially was a lollipop. Henin was even smaller but generated much more power on her serve.
Yes, really, Women's tennis is not worth the watch anymore. It's like "soulless" music: it's tasteless and uninteresting. Fortunately, men's tennis is absolutely fantastic and compensates, and is at its peak in my opinion (since Roger became #1 in 2004).

Martina, we miss your elegant tennis, your understanding of the game, your variety of shots... nowadays it is all about power. Whoever can hit the ball harder and makes less unforced errors, wins. WTA tennis has become BORING to watch. We miss the incredible matches of Steffi, Seles, Sabatini, Arantxa, Navratilova, Evert, and later the match of Hingis vs Graf, Seles and Capriati. Since the Williams', Sharapova etc, it has been downhill in terms of quality of tennis.

Now we have Serve and volley style coming back, the best evidence was that 2nd round match between Venus and Kimiko. One of the best volleyers in the game had trouble keeping up with someone that had such amazing hands.
Hingis is, and will always be the better player. End of story. Her tactics, natural technique, superb anticipation (even at 15 years of age), and great defence are skills. Serena will never have these attributes. Take away Serena's power and what are you left with? Would she beat Hingis on an equal level power playing field. ha Doubt it. How does one assess better player? I'm sure even Graf would have been beaten if she played in era of power aka the Williams sisters reign.

Serena is also quicker, mentally tougher, has technically better forehand, and her serve is better in everyway- not just more powerful You are also wrong to imply that power is not part of talent. Part of the reason Hingis doesnt have more power is the technique on some of her shots, especialy the serve and forehand, are actually not that strong.
Henin who is the same size as Henin has much more power. Graf vs the Williams? Of course she would handle their power better than Hingis, she did better vs them in 1999 as a 30 year old women way past her prime after all kinds of injuries and surgeries than Hingis in her prime did vs them that same year.
THIS WAS AN INCREDIBLE MATCH!! Hingis played very well and she deserved to win. Bottom line: Hingis played a better game and she won it. I'm sure that Serena also learned a lot from this match by not letting her opponents back into the game when she is serving for the set. Both players left everything out on the court!

I was 10 years old and sitting in the crowd for this one, and it was one of the most brilliant games of tennis that I'd ever seen.
Someone said that the crowd wasnt very good? I think that the game was so tense towards the end that the crowd were too scared to make a sound during the points, so they didnt stuff up martina or serena.
i agree that the williams sisters changed the game, but dont forget hingis, she was still a master to watch.
I love that last point from hingis. that was a very smart move to take time away from serena's slice to set up the smash. she knew she had to make it happen.
This is one of the few matches where Hingis really fought despite falling behind and she was patient and did not get discouraged by Serena's power. Hingis waited out the storm and seized all of her opportunities. Such a great match!

I disagree entirely. Hingis was only good when the williams sister were not at top of their game yet. Just as soon as the williams sister was on top she fell. She had been in so many final thatt she lost. 8 or 9. It shows how mentally week she is. Eventhough the williams sister was not vewry consistent, still, they can win grand slam titles even to this age. Hingis won her last grand slam at the age of 18 and then she never woin it again and lost in so many final. which is pathetic to me.
I think despite her lack of power she did more than reasonably well for herself. She has no reason to feel ashamed, nor is $20 million-plus in the bank from tournament wins alone pathetic.

Serena was a way better back then, it was not all about power. She was really fast and had good tactical game. But in the match against Henin at say, 2007, the magic was lost! I think she replaces the lack of speed with power to win these days.
nowadays she can do everything with the ball back then she barely could volley and do slices properly, she is a way better player now than she is ever been, and she is by no means slow.

love it...watched it before...either serena choked, (leading 4-1 in the third, serving for the match at 5-4), tired or just martina gave her best in the end.....but still i consider this as one of serena's choke moments with the 2009 french open quarterfinals, 2004 championship finals...serena lead 4-2 in the third in 2009 frnechoepn,serving for 40-0 and got broken...serena leads 4-2 agaisnt sharapova, lost through injury...kudos for martina..

Martina Hingis is the only woman I would pay to watch play tennis. She is the kind of talent that only comes around once every couple of generations, and it's a shame she's no longer around. I stopped watching women's tennis when she left the game.
The tennis on here is good to watch, but rebound ace is pretty awful to play on. It's also a very poor surface for learning tennis on. I think Pat Cash blamed the decline of Australian tennis in recent years on the fact that many courts in Australia had been changed to Rebound Ace
There's a really interesting debate going on at the moment about the new surface. It was meant to be faster than rebound Ace but a lot of people think it played slower. The Rebound Ace got a lot of criticism from the players because it absorbed the heat, making the court scorchingly hot, and also tended to melt in the heat, making it sticky and causing a lot of ankle injuries

Hingis' game was great to watch, but she was just a disgusting person (the things she said about her opponents). Whether or not she stayed in the game, the Williams sisters would have taken over the top rankings, as would Henin. I understand being a huge fan of a player, but let's be realistic.

This is what you get when two great players with two different styles bring out their best. Serena wins points with her amazing power winners while Hingis with her savvy and versatility. Williams vs Hingis is as exciting as Federer vs Nadal, Graf vs Seles, Evert vs Navratilova. Nowadays no women player is different. Everyone plays the same way. Very few players can come close to the versatility and touch of Hingis (Chakvetadze, Radwanska). NONE comes near the power of Williams .
If only Chakevetadze and Radwanska would play consistently... don't know what happened to Chakvetadze, she has a lovely game to watch but is losing these days. Both these players are inferior at the net compared to Hingis but have nice footwork and variety off the ground.

Hingis was a smart, talented player, but she could not beat the strongest players in their primes (Serena, Venus, Lindsay Davenport). (Remember that Serena was not yet 20 in this 2001 match and not yet at her best--Martina's game matured faster. This was the last win for Martina--Serena won the last three matches they played.)
And even for a smaller girl Hingis had a bad serve--the second serve especially was a lollipop. Henin was even smaller but generated much more power on her serve.

Yes, really, Women's tennis is not worth the watch anymore. It's like "soulless" music: it's tasteless and uninteresting. Fortunately, men's tennis is absolutely fantastic and compensates, and is at its peak in my opinion (since Roger became #1 in 2004).

Martina, we miss your elegant tennis, your understanding of the game, your variety of shots... nowadays it is all about power. Whoever can hit the ball harder and makes less unforced errors, wins. WTA tennis has become BORING to watch. We miss the incredible matches of Steffi, Seles, Sabatini, Arantxa, Navratilova, Evert, and later the match of Hingis vs Graf, Seles and Capriati. Since the Williams', Sharapova etc, it has been downhill in terms of quality of tennis.

Now we have Serve and volley style coming back, the best evidence was that 2nd round match between Venus and Kimiko. One of the best volleyers in the game had trouble keeping up with someone that had such amazing hands.

Hingis is, and will always be the better player. End of story. Her tactics, natural technique, superb anticipation (even at 15 years of age), and great defence are skills. Serena will never have these attributes. Take away Serena's power and what are you left with? Would she beat Hingis on an equal level power playing field. ha Doubt it. How does one assess better player? I'm sure even Graf would have been beaten if she played in era of power aka the Williams sisters reign.

Sure, Hingis had a fantastic tactical game, nobody can deny that, but while Hingis had great natural technique, Serena had other great natural gifts, like her speed, strength, and a great serve. Part of being a memorable player is also longevity, and 9 years after this match, Serena is still dominating and winning slams.

Hingis is already nearly forgotten and thought of as a player who lucked to peak when Graf went down with injuries, when Seles was on the way down, and before the big hitters emerged. One who was forced into retirement at only 21 by not being able to handle an improving field. Henins success further diminishes Hingis as Henin is just as small as Hingis is.

Serena is also quicker, mentally tougher, has technically better forehand, and her serve is better in everyway- not just more powerful You are also wrong to imply that power is not part of talent. Part of the reason Hingis doesnt have more power is the technique on some of her shots, especialy the serve and forehand, are actually not that strong.

THIS WAS AN INCREDIBLE MATCH!! Hingis played very well and she deserved to win. Bottom line: Hingis played a better game and she won it. I'm sure that Serena also learned a lot from this match by not letting her opponents back into the game when she is serving for the set. Both players left everything out on the court!

I remember this game well.
I was 10 years old and sitting in the crowd for this one, and it was one of the most brilliant games of tennis that I'd ever seen.
Someone said that the crowd wasnt very good? I think that the game was so tense towards the end that the crowd were too scared to make a sound during the points, so they didnt stuff up martina or serena.
i agree that the williams sisters changed the game, but dont forget hingis, she was still a master to watch.

This is one of the few matches where Hingis really fought despite falling behind and she was patient and did not get discouraged by Serena's power. Hingis waited out the storm and seized all of her opportunities. Such a great match!

I disagree entirely. Hingis was only good when the williams sister were not at top of their game yet. Just as soon as the williams sister was on top she fell. She had been in so many final thatt she lost. 8 or 9. It shows how mentally week she is. Eventhough the williams sister was not vewry consistent, still, they can win grand slam titles even to this age. Hingis won her last grand slam at the age of 18 and then she never woin it again and lost in so many final. which is pathetic to me.

Serena was a way better back then, it was not all about power. She was really fast and had good tactical game. But in the match against Henin at say, 2007, the magic was lost! I think she replaces the lack of speed with power to win these days.

Wouldn't say she is better than in the past. She was at her best in 2002/2003, now she seems to be getting into the form however I think she was way faster in the past and had much better footwork.

What are you talking about ? At that time the depth of the game wasnt as strong.. today the players hit much harder serve much better.Serena has improved her game to stay at the top.She runs down unbelievable balls even moreso now but the only thing is with age her body has become BROAD as hell and thus luks clumsy getting to hte ball everyone says she should lose weight.. She is NOT fat. She has become broad.. and there is nothing she can do to reduce her bone structure. its similar to her mums

i wouldn't say way faster, it's not that much that she lost in speed as in agility, footwork...she just seems lazy sometimes...

@czarnicolas12 I agree, she is a much more complete player now, and her serve is nothing short of astounding. Although, back then, she was so fast and strong that she didn't even need to add these things into her game to win slams.

And she is NOT slow at all ? Have you ever seen her run down balls all this while?
She does look clumsier getting to the balls because of her size her structure has gotten broader. thats not fat but with age she has become broader thus clumsy

@camaranina Serena is very athletic, honest the williams sister play with no grace, Hingis had a beautiful tennis to watch and amazing backhand and a very good volley as well.The other thing is that finally black players would be at the top of tennis, do you remember Zina garisson?

love it...watched it before...either serena choked, (leading 4-1 in the third, serving for the match at 5-4), tired or just martina gave her best in the end.....but still i consider this as one of serena's choke moments with the 2009 french open quarterfinals, 2004 championship finals...serena lead 4-2 in the third in 2009 frnechoepn,serving for 40-0 and got broken...serena leads 4-2 agaisnt sharapova, lost through injury...kudos for martina..

nice. tennis then was better to watch with it having VERY long rallies w/c makes it exciting! Hingis ruled then and she aint even the type who plays the lines alot.
Today, points are really short and everyone is gunning for the lines w/ so much power. w/c i think the williamses revolutionized. noisy and tedious.

HIngis's game is really pleasant to watch. The way she moves around the court and how she builds up a point, just wonderful.
She and Henin are my favorites, too bad they left the sport. :(

Martina Hingis is the only woman I would pay to watch play tennis. She is the kind of talent that only comes around once every couple of generations, and it's a shame she's no longer around. I stopped watching women's tennis when she left the game.

The tennis on here is good to watch, but rebound ace is pretty awful to play on. It's also a very poor surface for learning tennis on. I think Pat Cash blamed the decline of Australian tennis in recent years on the fact that many courts in Australia had been changed to Rebound Ace

There's a really interesting debate going on at the moment about the new surface. It was meant to be faster than rebound Ace but a lot of people think it played slower. The Rebound Ace got a lot of criticism from the players because it absorbed the heat, making the court scorchingly hot, and also tended to melt in the heat, making it sticky and causing a lot of ankle injuries

I agree. I have always like martina's clean precise hitting, but i was a little too sarcastic. I meant that it was a shame that this drug thing had to ruin her retirement. And the other comments are wrong. It's not their fault thy the can hit the ball harder than the rest. I don't think over power is all it took to take out champions like Hingis or henin.

You can t alk about her remarks againts her opponents (which I consider honesty and candidness) or her messed up drug case, but I will only discuss to you what she brings to the women's game - delight and purpose. Steffi, Seles, Williams. Look at them and you will only see one thing - desire to win. Look at Martina - she's winning also but look at her. She's like enjoying it a lot and playing like she's painting or dancing or even singing. There is fancy and beauty in her game.

I am a rabid fan. Believe me. But when I talk about my idols and their rivals I'd rather talk about what they bring to the table and not what they do in their rooms in their privacy. Example, you can lambast Marlon Brando for being the lunatic that he is and for his equally deranged family life but I will noly cite to you what I liked about his acting - intensity and depth. Likewise to Michael Jackson. Ditto for Martina Hingis.

even if she beat them at this tournament, you have to look at the stats and see that they have more grand slams than her , she was always talking thrash that she was better than them, they showed her the opposite

martina was just too good for everyone..infact when martina was still playing..the williams sisters never achieved such a high rank!but now that martina is gone,serene became #1!if martina comesback again she still had a chance to make if..because she was right that the players who are dominating now are the same players that she used to beat before..no onep lays like martina and without martina,tennis is horribly boring

Hingis' game was great to watch, but she was just a disgusting person (the things she said about her opponents). Whether or not she stayed in the game, the Williams sisters would have taken over the top rankings, as would Henin. I understand being a huge fan of a player, but let's be realistic.
"Horribly boring" is a bit of an overstatement, but I guess we're all entitled to our own opinions, as biased as they may be. There are still great "court readers" playing, they just can't keep up.

This is what you get when two great players with two different styles bring out their best. Serena wins points with her amazing power winners while Hingis with her savvy and versatility. Williams vs Hingis is as exciting as Federer vs Nadal, Graf vs Seles, Evert vs Navratilova. Nowadays no women player is different. Everyone plays the same way. Very few players can come close to the versatility and touch of Hingis (Chakvetadze, Radwanska). NONE comes near the power of Williams .

If only Chakevetadze and Radwanska would play consistently... don't know what happened to Chakvetadze, she has a lovely game to watch but is losing these days. Both these players are inferior at the net compared to Hingis but have nice footwork and variety off the ground.
